Your ears will thank you for putting on DNA by Xylos, a Brooklyn-based band that’s defining modern synthpop in all the right ways. Everything here is where it’s supposed to be and in exactly the right amounts. And it’s just one of five triumphs that make up their new EP Body Is Open – an irresistibly dance inducing and evolved suggestion of even more exiting work to come.

Meshing Tuareg rhythms of the Sahara with gritty blues-rock of the States, Niger-born guitarist Goumar “Bombino” Almoctar has sculpted a mesmerizing sound that spans two continents, thousands of miles and decades of bloody political conflict. Following the international success of his solo album Agadez, he returns with this track off newly released Nomad, produced by The Black Keys’s Dan Auerbach at his Nashville studio. A survivor, refugee and former shepherd, Bombino now stands to succeed Tuareg pioneers Tinariwen as the living embodiment of modern-day desert blues.

This track off their self-titled debut album is a musical middle finger your parents would not approve of. Skating, drinking and drugging up the streets of LA never sounded so much fun.

Things are going well for UK-based Kidnap Kid aka Mark Relton. He just graduated from university, he finished a new EP yesterday and, oh yeah, he won iTunes US Best Electronic Song of 2012 for his debut release “Vehl” on budding indie Black Butter Records. Not bad. And neither is this track off his second release So Close. I’m calling it an expertly executed house head bobber and leaving it at that, which I think he would prefer. As luck would have it, TMD will be bobbing along to his tunes in person when he and TEED come play DC’s U St. Music Hall on June 5. See you there.

***NEW CONTRIBUTOR ALERT***

Who’s making better synth pop than the French these days? The answer: nobody. The proof: check out this infectious dance tune from Montreal quartet Le Couleur. The first track off their newly released (and beautifully crafted) EP Voyage Love has everything going for it – a groovy bassline, soothing synth, a touch of tambourine and delicate vocals delivered in the most romantic of the Romance languages. It’s stained-glass sun-splashed disco from a band that needs more of your attention. Rumor has it they’ll be crossing the border to play some shows – hopefully alongside their friends and collaborators from French Horn Rebellion. Fingers crossed.
