You guys are from Charlotte, NC right? How did that area influence your music at all?

We love our hometown! Everything about where we grew up can have an influence on our sound, but I would say that Charlotte itself doesn’t change our sound. It has everything to do with who we’ve been around and where we find inspiration. We can be inspired by anything we find from anywhere! We love finding inspiration in every form.

What’s the back story with Flagship? Where did the name come from and how did you guys get together?

Drake thought of the name Flagship years and years ago and it just stuck. I had a different band back in 2011 and we asked Drake to fill in for a member on a random gig where we were missing a member! Once that happened, we just clicked and started making more music together. It was very easy!
A perfect match! Where do you guys find inspiration when writing and performing?

We find inspiration in everything! Movies can inspire us, world leaders, comedy, tv shows, mental battles and things we have to overcome. I’m inspired by my personal journey to find happiness and joy in a messy world.

What has been the best moment so far in your all’s music?

[Being in] LA at the moment working on album 2. I am incredibly excited!

If you could spend an hour with someone, alive or dead, who would it be?

Maybe Paul McCartney… or Abe Lincoln!
Paul is definitely on my list too. Ok, tell me something about Flagship that no one knows (but soon will).

And yes Tim, Parade of Lights was the first band I added.

But last week I had the pleasure of catching Anna Rose’s show at Bowery Electric, and man that girl can rock. Her demeanor is sweet and lovely like her name, and Anna is a relatively small human (comparatively speaking, I’m 6’ft)- but don’t let that fool you. Anna holds a stage like a full rock band.

Her first song was called ‘Under Your Skin’ and it was by far my favorite of the set and is off Anna’s new album, release date TBD. (Will get back to you on that one) She followed ‘Under Your Skin’ with a song called ‘Electric Child’ off her 2013 album ‘Behold a Pale Horse’. If you want some insane guitar instrumentals and solos, this is your poison. Anna’s band is incredible, and I am slightly obsessed with the solos Anna’s guitarist, Adam Stoler was throwing out.

I noticed throughout the whole set that the band’s sound had some serious range. One song was so hard rock I thought about starting a head bang, and the next would have much softer guitars strums- to where I thought I was back in Nashville on Broadway. Anna’s final song was like this, ‘Los Angeles’, where I got a bit of a country vibe. Anna did a brief stint in LA, and I can only imagine that this is where the inspiration from the song came from.

I spent last Sunday with a few very talented bands. The Mosers being one (interview of lead singer Mikey here), Night Riots, and the very talented band of Young Rising Sons. Heard of them? Probably. They have a few good hits out like ‘High’ and ‘Fucked-Up’, which when used in the same sentence can often describe my Saturday night. They also went out on tour with 1975 last year, where famously Taylor Swift was seen cheering on then boyfriend Matt Healy at our own Terminal 5. Slay Taylor, slay.

Now something you might not know about the guys, they hail from Red Bank NJ. I’ve said this before but Farley roots are there, so of course I had to see what they were about. I was not disappointed. Lead singer Andy, though not from NJ (I forgive you), has a great voice and the band is solid (they’ve known each other for a long time- so it makes sense). Before their set, YRS came on stage when The Mosers played “Friend” and you could tell as soon as Andy hit the stage- high pitched squeeks erupted from the crowd. The fans love him and you could tell he loved them as well.

The guys played an awesome set all around but a few favorites of mine were ‘Turnin”, “American Renegade”, and “Coming Home”. What a fun show. Constant dancing, people everywhere screaming the lyrics, and Julian and Dylan killing it in front of me on the guitar.

YRS played ‘Somebody’ acoustically, which is one of my favorite things in the world. They invited both Night Riots and The Mosers to sing along for this one, and it was glorious. At the back end of the tour and probably ready to kill each other- these three bands came together, shared one stage, and looked out to a beaming crowd. It was a magical moment. YRS ended the set with ‘Fucked-Up’ and Andy jumping on the speaker.

Hailing from one of the greatest states in our nation, The Mosers hit the music scene from Asbury Park, New Jersey. I was fortunate enough to catch them play CMJ weekend and instantly loved their music. After stalking their publicist I nailed down an interview with Mike Pellegrino- lead singer of The Mosers. They are currently on tour with Young Rising Sons and their first EP Ticonderoga is out now. The band will be at Brooklyn Bowl on Nov. 22nd, so be sure to check them out. I’ll see you friends there. Mikey! Hey my friend.

Hi Cassie! How are you?

Great, great. Where are you guys right now? Texas?

Yep, we are in El Paso.

Nice, what time is the show?

Good question. Our set is at 8 but its like a street music festival here. So there are a bunch of local bands playing around the main stage. So there isn’t anyone playing on the main stage yet, just all around it. Still trying to figure out what is going on ha.

Haha ok. Well I’ll keep this short and sweet for you, but thanks so much for jumping on the phone with me today. I saw you guys play at Black Panda’s CMJ showcase, and what an awesome performance.

Ah nice, thank you! Yeah that was a fun night.

Ok first question, have to ask- where specifically in Jersey are you from?

Half of us are from Asbury Park, and that is where we say we are from. Kinda like our home base. The other half are from a little more north.

Awesome, my whole dad’s family is from Rumson/Fair Haven area.

Oh yeah! The Young Rising Sons guys are from there.

Yes, yes. Love the Jersey.

I actually grew up in West Jersey, like with cows at the bottom of my street. That’s the great thing about New Jersey is that there are so many different sections you often find yourself thinking “What is New Jersey? Does it have an identity?” Haha.

Yes, agreed. So did Jersey have any influence on your music? Or was it more your parents?

Jersey for sure- 100%. We all met when we were 16/17. We were all in different local bands. Jersey had a huge music scene, venues all across the board, all ages shows, every weekend. My first band was when I was 14, then I started another band when I was 16 which kind of took off to local celebrity type level. Rick was in another band called Racing Kites, and then Matt and Dave were in another band called Alora. So at that time we were all on the same show circuit and aware of each other’s musical abilities. And you know, so many bands have come out of New Jersey like Bouncing Souls, or Thursday- and played the same stages that we were playing on. Tt gave us the work ethic, like if those guys could make we can make it.

Yeah definitely.

So yeah, and then 3 years ago we had nothing really going on and Dave called me up saying he was started a band with Rick and Matt. And I said fuck it yeah, let’s do it.

That’s amazing. Alright, so huge congrats on Ticonderoga. I listened to it all today, and it’s amazing. I’m officially obsessed.

Yes, one of my favorites is ‘Jeepers Creepers’. I heard you all play it at CMJ and was like “Wait, wait, wait- this is amazing!”

Ha! That’s been I think the favorite so far. I mean it was the last song we wrote for the album. We wanted a 6th song and we had written a ton of songs for it, and Dave and I were like hmm.. let’s write one more. We actually almost dropped it, we didn’t know how we felt about it. That’s kind of a classic thing for us to do.

Haha really?

Yeah, like ‘Cold Hearted Girl’ we almost dropped that song too. Thinking ‘I don’t know if this is good or not…’ and then it ended up being our single and music video. So that’s that.

Yeah

But Jeepers Creepers we wrote that after we shot the music video for Cold Hearted Girl. So that was the absolute last minute song for the EP, and it turned out great.

Yeah, so is it you and Dave that mainly write?

Nah all 4 of us write. It was just that one where him and I were in the studio doing some mixing and we started to get it going. But then you need everyone in there to make it happen. We actually write our music to play it live. So we write at rehearsal spaces, live.

Yeah that’s pretty smart and definitely a different approach. I feel like a lot of bands should do more of that.

Yeah!

Where do you look for inspiration in your music when you are writing?

Hm, I’ve been asked this before and I feel like I need to change my answer.

There is no wrong answer. Some people say nothing, some say everything, some say the Spice Girls. No judgement here.

Haha ok. Well I’m inspired by my musical taste, which is all over the board. For example in the summer, I’ll usually listen to punk rock like Flatliners, Bouncing Souls, stuff like that. The songs of the summer are usually a little more up tempo, let’s party kind of feel. ‘Bad Times’, our first song on the record, actually came out of that type of feeling. We wanted to kick off the record with an up beat feel, the kind of feeling that you want for a first song on an album. Going back to what I was saying before, we really write to play sick rock songs live. I mean our idols are people like The Foo Fighters and Nirvana and you see them perform live, well footage because I was a baby when Nirvana was playing, and it is just incredible. Real talk, leave it on stage.

Yep, absolutely.

And then with all of that comes the lyrics afterwards. What is the vibe of the music? Is it more of a somber of a song, or minor notes? Does it make it more serious? Like ‘Jeepers Creepers’ we purposely put some wrong notes in there to give it this super quirky 90’s feel, and that’s a fun song to play live. We wrote about just being.. a piece of shit I guess haha.

I love it! So awesome. Now that I’m thinking about it I haven’t seen like a really good live rock band in awhile. I feel as if everyone went through the house music phase, some hipsters decided to like country along the way.

Country, is that a real thing!?

Ha! I mean I listen to country, but it was this new wave of cool. Good rock and roll music is really hard to find.

Yeah that’s been the goal the whole way through, just a straight rock band. We didn’t start the band and say “We need to sound like this”, we just started a band and all really love rock. And beer.

Yes haha. Both amazing things in life. So you mentioned the Foo Fighters and Bouncing Souls before but do you have one band or musical influence you look to? This is super cliché but maybe it’s Bruce because of the whole Jersey vibe.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Bruce. And to give you some context I got into music myself. My parents really weren’t into music or showing me music, so I was actually in college when I found Bruce. Which is probably a sin being from New Jersey. But I love Bruce.

Yeah of course. Who doesn’t love Bruce?

Haha. But my favorite band of all time…. Weezer.

Ahh, yessss!

Haha they were one of the first records I got as a kid. My cousin had given me 3 records: the Blue album by Weezer, Green Day’s Dookie, …And Out Come The Wolves by Rancid. But my mom drove me to school and the only one I could listen to in the car because there was no cursing was Weezer. So I would listen to it every morning, every single day coming home. Half on the way there, and then half on the way back. And I still listen to that record front to back no problem.

Oh hell yeah! I go back and listen to all of those records. I was a punk kid back in the day, definitely threw down some Taking Back Sunday, Hawthorne Heights, Story of the Year. Lost the black nail polish, bracelets, and lipstick- but the music is still a hug part of my life.

Oh absolutely! I mean I have lyrics from The Format tattooed on my arm. Nothing wrong with being an emo kid.

I fucking love it! Alright, so far what has been the most impactful moment in your music?

Hmmm… signing a deal with the Sons Social Club, which was more of a production deal since we are still an unsigned band, and shooting our first music video was incredible. It was a pretty big budget for a music video, nothing that we would have been able to afford on our own, and the experience in and of itself was…amazing. We all just had this feeling when we were shooting that this band could really go somewhere.

So then from there just getting signed onto this tour. The EP came out the day we left, 4 days before our first show. And then kids were in the front row singing the lyrics to our songs.

That is amazing.

I meant that is one moment, and I could give you another 10! Haha, let’s just say that the month of October was insane for us. We are kinda getting the vibe like this could go somewhere, we don’t know where it would go, how far it’s going to go, how long its going to go, but it’s going.

I love it! Ok- next question on the industry. We are in an interesting place right now where there are a lot of free outlets to music (SoundCloud, Spotify, Apple Music), and a lot of top artists (Taylor Swift) who are battling the big music companies. But as an up and coming artist do you find them helpful for discovery purposes or should they be renegotiated to give better rights to artists?

I think it is absolutely helpful, and you kind of answered it for me. I think Spotify is amazing, I pay for it- through Spotify Premium. I just think it should be more in the favor of the artists. The way that Apple Music renegotiated their contracts when Taylor Swift spoke out- that is what needs to happen more and I think its coming back.

Yeah

Look everyone is a business person. You’re a business person, I’m a business person with this band. I think that more kids, who grew up in our era of Napster and are passionate about music, need to be running the industry from a business perspective.

Yep

But I will say this as well. I know the music industry is what it is, but if you look back in time and you could talk to The Rolling Stones… I’m sure they would have something that they complained about [in the industry] in the ’60’s and ’70’s. You will always have these things and hardships, but it is how you deal with them that will make you successful. You don’t let them cripple you, but you learn to the play the game. and I’m ready to play this game.

Awesome. I love it and I totally agree. Ok last question- tell me something nobody knows about The Mosers, but will soon know since everyone on the planet will read this interview.

I’ll tell you two things. One thing that I want people to know, that I feel they don’t know, is how we got the name ‘The Mosers’. It’s based after the show Dexter. So in the first season you find out that the main character is adopted and his biological last name is Moser.

WAIT. No fucking way- Dexter is my favorite show!

Yeah! So Dexter and Rudy Moser- the Ice Truck Killer.

That is Amazing!

That’s why we are the Mosers, we are huge fans of that show! But I’ve said that in interviews and its out there so I need one more thing… something that no one knows. Ok I got it. When we were in LA the venue was across the street from a Jack in the Box so Dylan from Young Rising Sons and I went there at 5 in the morning. I ordered 3 tacos and they gave me 6. So I came back with some extra tacos and I woke Rick, our drummer, up by putting the taco on his chest. I go ‘Rick, Rick I got you a taco’- and he shoots straight up in the air and goes “Mike, get that fucking taco out of my pump. Don’t you ever bring me a taco again!”

HAHA

Hahaha and for some reason I thought it was the just funniest thing in the world.

After all of this you would think Sunday would be a day of rest… never. I pulled myself together and navigated my way through the aftermath of Halloween, (lots of hung over Walk-of-Shames and a sunken and sad Winnie the Pooh on the subway platform.) I headed down to Bowery Ballroom to catch a band by the name of Flagship perform.

Some background: Flagship is made up of Drake Margolnick and Michael ‘Mikey’ Finster from Charlotte, North Carolina. They have been out on tour with A Silent Film in support of their single, “I Want You” off their EP Faded (via Bright Antenna Records), and are probably some of the nicest guys I’ve had the chance to meet.

As soon as these guys came on stage, I was blown away by their entrance. What a sound. They are definitely going to need a bigger venue.

Flagship has a great stage presence. They talk, laugh, joke, and mingle easily with the crowd. Mikey is especially sweet, and his enthusiasm is contagious. Here are a few favorite songs of mine that really deserve a listen:

One last point, Drake’s voice is not to be messed with. It sounds a little familiar, like a mix with Dave Grohl and Sean Van Vleet’s voices from Empires … but it is also unique to Flagship’s music. I loved it. Drake- from now on I will request that you sing everything to me- even simple hellos and goodbyes. You think I’m joking…

The guys are back in their home town of Charlotte on Monday 11/9. Check them out live if you can, you won’t be disappointed.

Most of you probably went out for CMJ Week a few weeks ago. Mingled with industry people, listened to great tunes, and saw some amazing bands.

Me? I just went for the free drinks.

…Just Kidding. Kind of.

I was only able to go to 2 shows this year- our own showcase at the Knitting Factory and Black Panda’s Showcase at Webster Hall. Black Panda & the boys from East Love were nice enough to invite me out for the night and I was so glad I went. Now this ‘review’ might seem late, so let’s not call it that. Let’s call it… ‘I’m going to tell you about some really awesome bands I saw recently, and you should probably look them up’

I like that better.

I arrived at Webster Hall right as Atarah Valentine went on. Didn’t know what to expect from these guys, but was super surprised. They played some awesome true rock and roll songs, that made jumping around the dance floor seamless. Rock- the genre you miss, but don’t realize you miss, until you hear songs like these. Don’t worry guys, Rock isn’t dead- it’s just caught up in the lead singer’s fabulous hair.

Personal favorite of theirs was ‘Forever Young’. Need it now, please.

Next up on the line-up was The Mosers. When the guys walked up to the stage, I immediately thought ‘These guys definitely have to be from Vermont”- nope. Actually New Jersey- go dirty Jerz.

The Mosers had a great sound, and it was easy listening. I often watch the crowd more when bands perform, because the reactions of fans speak thousands of words. There was a man in his mid ’60s to my left singing along and then directly in front of me was a young couple dancing like crazy. The couple then started to make out. Then dance like crazy again. Then make out. Music has power people.

The final song for the Mosers was a special one. It was called ‘Friend’ and they were joined on stage by Young Rising Sons, another Dirty Jersey band- Red Bank to be specific, holla! (Pappa Farley was raised there).

Super impressed by these guys, and trying to nail down an interview with them so tune back for more.

Third on the list that I saw was a Kid named Olivver. Or better known yet as ‘Olivver the Kid’.

I had one song of Olivver’s that I really liked- ‘Lucy (Hurt People Hurt People)’, but the band was definitely all about that bass. This could have been that the venue was too small for the sound- lord knows that happens to bands all the time. But it was hard to hear Olivver’s actual voice over the instrumentals. One mash up that I did pick up was “Blue” with Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home”. Now I’m not a Drake fan, but that was pretty cool.

And last but certainly never least, East Love walked on stage.

The last time I saw these guys at Webster Hall, it was their big debut in the city as a full band. They were amazing, the crowd was raging, and Lukas was kissing babies and shaking hands left and right.

This time, though just a few months later, I saw a difference in their performance. The crowd was different, more industry people- less crying fans. Lukas didn’t bless any babies, and there was less raging, but their sound was more mature, and you could tell they felt more comfortable with each other as a band. Now if you were a stranger watching these guys perform you probably wouldn’t have noticed any of the above, but instead listened to some talented guys play good music. But I’ve spent a lot of time with the boys over the past few months, and its been a joy watching them grow.

East Love closed with a crowd favorite ‘Little Less’, and everyone loved it. They also announced that they will be headlining at Brooklyn Bowl in January- details here. See you all there.

Now if you haven’t heard of SOWE (Southern Westchester) Music Festival, don’t worry because I hadn’t either. Situated right in Harbor Island Park, the festival was surrounded by ocean, beautiful boats and plenty of sun. It was also packed with food trucks, local beer, corn hole, and most importantly music.

I arrived just as East Love came on to the stage, recognizing the lead singer Lukas’s voice immediately. And though the festival had just opened up, people started to flock to the music. As it goes with most festivals you don’t get the full listen, so the guys set was short on time but definitely not quality. They played their released singles ‘Little Less’, ‘Straight Lines’ and their newest ‘Unbroken’- be on the look out a for a full album soon. Now I could go through and break down my thoughts song by song, beat by beat, minute by minute- but that wouldn’t do these guys justice. Your best bet is to take a listen. East Love loves to be on stage and their energy is intoxicating so I recommend seeing them live, you won’t be disappointed.

Ryan, How are you my friend? 
Hey Cassie, I’m good! I’m good- We are… I don’t know where we are at the moment but we are coming from Silver Spring, Maryland. Played at the Fillmore. And now we are making our way up to Canada.

Oh nice! 
Yeah, we play Toronto then Montréal and then make our way back down the east coast.

Awesome, you are doing two shows in New York right? 
Yep! 2 shows in New York, a show in Boston. We got a bunch of stuff.

Anything memorable so far? 
Um.. well its been- well do you mean just these few couple shows we’ve done?

Yeah! 
Well everyone on the tour has been super awesome. They are really nice people, and have been very welcoming. We have been very lucky. But as far as memorable goes, it’s actually been a little rough haha.

Haha ok. Why’s that? 
It’s always tough to get into a groove you know, first couple days of the tour. We are still trying to find it, kind of integrate ourselves into something that is already moving. But we are getting there. Second night was better than the first night, and so forth but we are getting there. So hopefully we will get to Canada and it will be even better.

Yeah, definitely. So congrats on Feeling Electric, it’s amazing! I love ‘Wake Up’, added it to every playlist I have. Can you tell me a little bit more on how making it was? Favorite song?

Ha well it’s kind of a weird story. We were set to tour all summer, we had a bunch of festival shows, etc. But things kind of worked out to where we needed to work on new music. You know we were at the point where we needed to start working on the record, or it was going to be a long time before we did a full record. We decided to cancel a couple of the tours we were on, to do this record. We couldn’t cancel the festival dates though, so the option was to fly from LA to these festivals- which would have cost us a good amount of money. OR we hold up in the Midwest- and drive to the festival dates. Which allowed us to have a studio and a condo for basically the same amount of money. So we decided to hold up in Nashville for about 3 months and did the record. It was interesting- it would have come out much differently if we had known that we were going to be doing it… But out of nowhere we ended up just being like “We are doing a record!”. So nothing was written… nothing what was done. So we literally went in there and built it from the ground up- scratch.

Wow.
You know, produced it ourselves and everything. And yeah- that’s what we came up with. Haha it was definitely an adventure living out there. Some of the best weed I’ve had in my entire life.

Hahaha. Awesome. So favorite track on the album? 
Favorite track… hmm. Hard to say. There are obviously things I like about each one. I think one that I listen to and I go “Ok I think we did this one right” is ‘Undefeatable’. I think that that’s one that… you know with producing ourselves, you get caught up with the fine detail and good quality. But I think ‘Undefeatable’ is the one I have the least comments on.

Haha. Ok so what do you want people to take away from your music and performances? I know it’s a pretty broad question.

No, no I get it. I think for me is that everything means positive. Someone asked me this question the other day “What do you want people to take away from the record?” I guess just that it’s just a hopeful record, and something that is inspiring to people. You know as cliché as it sounds, inspiring you to be the best person that you can possibly be. Even though there are some more somber songs on the record- it is reflective of how life has its ups and downs. There is a positive arch throughout the entire record that I see. Hopefully people take that in and connect with it and then apply it to their life in a positive way. And I think for the show, we aim to put out an arena show wherever we are.

Yeah! Yes. I love that. I thought the show you guys did with X Ambassadors was amazing- and you kind of blew them out of the water in a sense. In my opinion at least.

Hahaha well thank you. I remember that show, that was a lot of fun.

It was great. I think also playing in New York is just an incredible energy. That’s what a lot of people say at least when they talk about memorable shows. The hardest city to be in, but can give you the best time.

Yeah. You know that was probably one of our best shows actually.

Really?! Awesome. Glad I was there. Ok so before you were talking about inspiring people through music, but what inspires you as an artist?

Umm… I mean it’s hard to quantified one thing. We are interested in all different kinds of mediums. Anthony is a graphic designer and does a ton of graphic art. All 4 of us are into all different types of art. So it’s one of these things that I think collective… the 4 of us being interested in so many different things, it all goes into the music and makes it what it is. I mean me personally, what inspires me is definitely music. I love 80’s music and I know some people don’t agree but I’m a big U2 fan. Especially The Joshua Tree and Unforgettable Fire. Also, just big epic cinematic things inspire me- entertainment as well. I think that’s why we have such a large sound, and we are not going to edit it because we are in a small venue.

Love it! Ok so ‘Golden’ was the first exposure I had to your all’s music, and then I heard it in an NBC commercial for the Sochi Olympics. What is that like? To hear your music in either a commercial or some other form than your own?

It’s weird because you hear it, but you don’t get to hear the reaction to it. Your kind of like “Oh there it is”. Some people are like “WOW!” haha, but for me, I respond to the people responding to the music if that makes sense. Since you don’t get an immediate reaction to the people that are seeing it. Regardless it’s a weird thing. I mean we are grateful and lucky that our music induced so much in that regard. For some reason people seem to gravitate to our music when it comes to soundtracks and such.

Yeah I agree. You can’t get much out of a song though in :30 seconds, especially when it is supposed to be supporting a product or brand. Ok, so changing lanes any artists that you are feeling these days?

Oh man that’s a good question. Um that we are listening to you mean?

Yeah! Bands that have not really hit it big yet. I love it when I come across an awesome sound that no one has really heard before.

Well recently through a good friend of mine, we found out about this band called ‘Teenage Wrist’. It’s actually the guy from ‘Chain Gang of 1974′ but its a side project. They are totally like 90’s rock… and it’s awesome. We’ve been listening to it this entire tour and it’s amazing.

Ok I’m going to look them up after this. Alright, closing thought. What is next for you all?

Again, hard to say. The goal really is to keep touring on this album and you know spread it a little bit more. Right we have been primarily focusing on the US, and only touring in the US with the exception of Canada. Which is great to be able to get up there, but we would like to spread our wings a bit further than that. Then thinking bigger than that we are already thinking about the next record. The band needs to evolve and be a living thing. We don’t want to be something that is stagnant, we want to make music that peaks people’s interest and keeps the fan base happy. Also as artists we need to grow and change, and I think we are all thinking ahead. Trying to be a little bit ahead of the curve of what is coming next, without being too involved of what is cool right now. Also, I think just giving all that we can as artists.
