Now that the festival season officially kicked off with Coachella, and the fact that it’s somehow 70ºF in New York, it’s really starting to feel like summer. And what better way to bring in summer than a tropical new tune?

Yoke Lore – Heavy Love

You know how certain songs can bring you back to a certain moment in time? Listening to Yellerkin’s “Tools” brings me back to the summer and fall of 2014; when I was trying to figure out my next step in life post-college, while spending as much time as possible running around the city, going to every concert I could.

Debut single “Heavy Love” picks up where Yellerkin left off, continuing with the organic folk-pop, albeit with a slight electronic tinge and a driving pulse that takes Yoke Lore to unchartered territories.

According to Adrian: “Yoke Lore is a technique of telling stories about how we are bound to one another and how we are bound to ourselves.The value of anything can be measured in how it connects to its various counterparts. Heavy Love deals with the weight that those relationships sometimes come with, but this is only one story among many that will make up the mythology of Yoke Lore.”

Isaac Lee-Kronick – Running Man

Very few people can claim that they’ve played the world’s greatest festival before releasing a proper debut. But Isaac Lee-Kronick can. Although he lost the Glastonbury Emerging contest to “Brazil” singer/songwriter Declan McKenna, Isaac-Lee Kronick still managed to score an opening slot at Glastonbury this past year, though only just sharing his premiere single “Running Man” on Noisey late last week.

“Running Man” shows major promise from the North Londoner, blending delicately warm vocals reminiscent of Kings Of Convenience atop tropical, percussive instrumentation and production. Definitely a must-listen.

Joywave – Destruction (Video)

If you follow Joywave on any social media you’ll know that frontman Daniel Armbruster quite the jokester, which is why we aren’t surprised that their latest video for live favorite “Destruction” tells a story packed with humor. Directed by Phil Andelmon – who’s done videos for Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Jay Z, and countless others – “Destruction” tells the story of the entrance of band’s newest member – an MP3 player – and the turmoil that follows.

And if you’ve seen Joywave live this past year, you’d know that the band both opens and closes with “Destruction”, so in proper fashion, the song plays for a second time during the drawn-out credits.

Missy’s Favorites of 2015

I feel like 2015 was about as consistent a year of music could get across the board, as it was a banner year for indie rock, punk, hip-hop, singer-songwriters, electronic, and pop music. We saw Sleater-Kinney reunite, Justin Beiber became “cool”, Kendrick Lamar released the most talked-about politically-charged masterpiece, Adele made her grand return, grime finally broke in the US, and a member of the xx uncharacteristically came out with the most lush, maximalist album of the year.

While this year turned out to be musically stellar, there have been several criminally-underrated releases, so without further adieu, here are my top 10 most underrated albums of the year as well as a playlist of some of my favorite songs.

Matoma – Hakuna Matoma

Electronic music is starting to come out of the big-room, massive-drop electro house rut and into an exciting new pop-driven route, led by guys like Jack Ü, Zedd, and most recently Matoma whose unique brand of tropical house pop has recently been in the limelight thanks to his enormous and loyal Soundcloud following (nearly two hundred thousand followers deep) and a slew of high-profile features and massive pop songs.

Instead of going the tradition album route, the forward-thinking producer decided to do something different, with his debut Hakuna Matoma organized as a digital “subscription” (described below) – one of its kind – featuring top-notch A-listers like Popcaan, Wale, Nico & Vinz, Jennifer Lopez, Jason Derulo, Akon, and hopefully more in the future.

“When I was releasing music by myself I could just put up my songs whenever I liked and engage with my fans all the time, and I think that’s how I really developed my sound and made my name. When I signed with the label, I really wanted to do an album, but I didn’t want to lose that vibe. ‘Hakuna Matoma’ is my living album that will continue growing as I grow with you guys. Many songs are finished, and also some of it will be written as I go, but I want my fans to come along with me on that journey because you are my inspiration and heart!” – Matoma

Dreamers – Shooting Shadows

As we reach the end of the year, it seems all of the best new music starts pouring out.

Brooklyn self described “cosmic rockers” Dreamers are back with their first new single in quite a while. “Shooting Shadows” is straight-up rock & roll, touching upon conflicting topics like love and hate, as the band explained to The Fader. And then the band definitely has the most kick-ass otherworldly aesthetic, as is evident by their latest press photo above.

World Champion – Shakes

Australian taste-making label Future Classic is at the top of the game, making a name for themselves with some of the best electronic releases in the past few years: everything from heavyweights Flume, Jagwar Ma, and Chet Faker to emerging talents Wave Racer, Wafia, and Basenji – and more recently, Sydney duo World Champion.

With their latest single “Shakes” (premiered by Zane Lowe on Beats 1), World Champion champions Australian psychedelia that should appeal to fans of Tame Impala and Jagwar Ma. It’s a colorful, swirling track that will appear on their coming Avocado Galaxy EP, available December 4th.

And another win for Australia!

Northeast Party House – Perfect Lines

There are too many bands making incredible music in Australia that have just not crossed over: with constant radio play, sold out gigs all over the country, and prime slots at some of the hottest festivals Australia has to offer, Northeast Party House has what it takes to be big over here.

After releasing their stellar debut Any Given Weekend last year, Northeast Party House is back with “Perfect Lines”: a rocking song in typical Northeast Party House fashion that combines massive sing-along hooks, stadium-ready guitar riffs, and vocals that bring to mind a party-ready, less serious, more caffeinated Bloc Party.

After a successful CMJ (including a 3am dance party at our Mostly Music showcase), hopefully now will be the time for these guys to start breaking out in the States.

Punchline – Tell Me How You Sleep

Although we haven’t heard from him in a while, we’ve been early supporters of Harrison Wargo’s BADBOXES project. But little-known fact, his manager Steve Soboslai is actually the guitar-wielding frontman of Pittsburgh cult band Punchline, a project also featuring BADBOXES live drummer Cory Munro. So we thought we’d keep it in the family and tell you about how great Punchline’s new single and video “Tell Me How You Sleep” is.

Although formerly signed to Fueled By Ramen in the pop-punk era, Punchline has taken a turn, adding synths into the mix in order to create something new and exciting. “Tell Me How You Sleep” is absolute ear-candy featuring Steve’s glossy vocals, an earworm of a hook, and colorful synths that are becoming the new norm in the Punchline reboot.
