Aw man. 2013 was so crazy for me! I have never in my life paid so much attention to new music, and this was an awesome year to start. So many good, fresh tracks came out that I had to start making myself weekly Spotify playlists to keep up to date. Infinite thanks to Tim and Max for bringing me on board as a contributor–friggen’ life changing! Not only did they and other TMD writers introduce me to most of what populates my favorite tracks list, but I also got to be a part of starting our mad successful live showcase series. Lemme just say, helping put a live show of some of your favorite bands together feels pretty badass.

Here are 13 tracks from this year that I feel really define my taste and are particularly groundbreaking in some way or another. I hope you find a band or two you really like from our collective playlists, that you keep up with TMD in 2014 for more badassery, and that you have a wonderful new year!

EXROYALE – Give It Up

This debut track by mystery group EXROYALE is–strangely put–alchemy: simplicity turned to gold. They’ve created something complex from nothing. No one is going to accuse these guys of over-producing, but no one is going to be able to get this poppy jam out of their heads, either. The soulful R&B vocals are just what the pulsing soprano synth needs to pull together into a seriously fun track that anyone can get behind.

Tei Shi – Nevermind the End

Really digging Tei Shi’s second single. Honestly, really digging Tei Shi (Brooklyn’s own Val Teicher) in general. I moonlight as a blogger but during the day I work at a print shop, and I got to know Val a bit when she printed a mini-series of artsy thank-you cards to the people that have been supporting her music career. Bad-ass, huh? This track has a nice pulsing beat that’s getting me nicely through the final stretch of this hungover Friday. Take a listen-see and have a nice post-Halloween weekend.

Hannah Epperson – Shadowless

Oh yeah! I used to blog here in a past life! It’s all coming back to me! This cool piece by Vancouver’s Hannah Epperson brought me back. It’s a refreshingly sweet electronic pulse that is good accompaniment to all the other crap I’ve been spending time on instead of blogging. This girl performs live with a loop pedal and her violin, which is pretty badass, and definitely something I wouldn’t mind taking a look-see at. Enjoy this nice little autumn treat!

Tideup – A Dance In The Dark

Tideup are a dreamy synth pop duo from Orlando who came together over mutual love of a particular Dirty Projectors song, soooo. Count me in. Sometimes Craigslist works some miracles and I’d say this is one of them. The ghostly vocals mesh so well with the floating synths that you’d swear these guys have been writing music together since childhood. Nope. Only since late 2011.

Jamie Leffler’s voice is so ethereal and wispy and beautiful like a pretty scarf from a street cart in India. I just wanna dance around in a field with it flowing around me. Someone should take pics and put ’em on Instagram.

Dwntwn is one of my favorite things to come out of the west coast, and I have been patiently waiting (read: tweeting at them every month) for a new track to pop up so I could get my fix. Patience is rewarded kids!!! Remember that! Chocolate is one of the best songs of the year, and Dwntwn’s cover is a perfectly dreamy interpretation that for some reason just WORKS. SO. WELL.

Mixing alt-rock ballad with electro-pop dance jam, 90 Pounds of Pete have created an addictive sound with new single “Promiseland.” This is bringing me back to when I first heard Passion Pit’s Chunk of Change EP, chilling on the porch with my friends doing bad acoustic covers. There is simply something nostalgic about this track from the New Orleans-via-Chicago duo (songwriter Peter Martin and producer Adam Stewart). Add it to your end-of-summer playlist (free download, whuttt), and keep an eye on this band: They’ve got a new single in the works for next month as well.

Yuna – Falling

Are you feeling unmotivated this late Friday afternoon and want a pick-me-up? Are you feeling stuck in your life, like you just want to escape to somewhere remote and tropical? Are you feeling like you just straight up want to listen to some catchy pop but don’t want your ears assaulted by anything too intense? ‘Kay then listen to this new song by Malaysian pop princess Yuna, produced by the mastermind behind the sexy orchestral pop of Rhye, Robin Hannibal. Laying in a hammock, listening to Yuna’s gorgeous soft Feist-like voice and maybe some waves washing up on a beach – that’s all I want right now. I’m a simple girl.

Le Crayon – Give You Up (feat. KLP)

Last night I was out with a friend and maybe 3 or so drinks in (I’m a small person, keep in mind), and the DJ played a remix of Give You Up by Le Crayon (the Darius remix to be exact). Shazam was failing on me so I went up to the DJ to ask, and then made my friend record an Instagram video of him saying the name of the song. Yeah, instead of just writing it down. REALLY dumb. But I liked it that much. I realized later that I had heard about this song before, from KLP’s Facebook – she’s an Australian singer and producer I had blogged before – so essentially, everything fell together and now I am sharing this choice tune with you all.

Le Crayon (Lauren Crayon) is a French producer who has worked with some of the best: Crystal Fighters, Anoraak and Alan Braxe to name a few. He’s released an EP with Pyramid on Kitsuné, so you know you can trust his stylings. This piece is a disco dream, and everything on the EP is awesome.

We’ve all felt chills at a particularly good hook in a song, and that’s an awesome feeling. But I think you’re supposed to consult a doctor if the chills last the entire song. Especially difficult if you have the song on repeat. The last time that happened to me was when I first heard “The Mother We Share” by CHVRCHES. Makes sense; Munich, Germany-based Claire toured with CHVRCHES this summer. This is carefully-crafted, uniquely-chorded dance pop, perfect for late summer nostalgia. Also, just check out their Facebook – these guys look like some of the awesomest people to chill with. Games is out today in the US, so grab it from iTunes!
