of Verona – Kids on the Street

Talented indie-alt based band, of Verona, have just released their latest offering, “Kids on the Street,” a melodic thought provoking track in support of their second full length album “Glass Beach,” due out this Friday. As lead singer Mandi Perkins mentions, “the song is a commentary about social media on social media, and explores the idea of how someone is always watching, which is why we now view our lives through a lens. Not every story you hear is real and not every picture you see online tells a true story, it’s just someone’s highlight reel, but if you don’t remember that, it can make you feel dark and alone because your life doesn’t match up.” When Perkins sings “got to get a capture, caption it like this, show you really have it all,” you sense that she is telling us that no matter how great we think everyone else has it, in reality, we are all the same inside.

Death By Piano – Countdown

Brooklyn has long been a breeding ground for electronic beats, distinctive analog instrumentation, and great singing. Probability dictates that these elements should encounter each other within a singular entity, as they do in Death By Piano. A duo comprised of singer/keyboardist Kalen Lister and producer/instrumentalist Greywolf, DBP mixes the sounds of their native borough sifted through their reconstructive filter, centered by Kalen’s lush and expansive voice.

The band hits the ground running, or perhaps more appropriately tripping, with their debut single “Countdown,” a thick brew of strings and synths floating on a bed of pulsing percussion sounds. The song is a slow burn, subtly filling in the spaces around Kalen’s vocal, peaking at the chorus and beginning the process again for one more orbit through their atmosphere.

Jacuzzi Suites – Arrecife

You’d expect nothing less than a sonic escape from Jacuzzi Suites debut single Arrecife. The title itself means reef in Spanish and was inspired by the Brooklyn based artists recent trip to the Canary Islands. If it weren’t obvious from the steel drum and lapping waves intro this song is vibe central. JS captures that top down cruising, humid breeze, relaxed day four of vacation feel. You’ve established a routine, you know your way around, you’re basically a local. It’s zoney and therapeutic. Like the perfect beach cocktail it has just enough sweetness to offset the fact that you are drinking at 10 am with no plans of stopping. All of a sudden it makes complete sense to wonder why more people don’t live here. We should just move, it’s always warm, it’s totally feasible to rent jet skis for a living and never see our families again, right?

The feeling is utopian. Think neon lit ecstasy. Are we on drugs? No, well maybe not just now. But JS tries to produce anything that captures that feeling. The song is taking that trip, whether it’s figurative or literal, it’s abstract and up to you to interpret. There is a darkness that balances out the tropical joy of the song, like knowing you do in fact have to return to that desk job on Monday.

French Horn Rebellion – Second Opinion (Bee’s Knees Remix)

French Horn Rebellion, our NYC brethren have been remixed by west-coast remix phonemes, Bee’s Knees. They take what was a Steely Dan meets Michael Jackson jammer, and gives it an ultra cool edge ready for 2016. We think you’ll really like this one, so make sure to check it out!

Broken Luxury – Come Back

Enisa – Burn This Bridge

Sometimes a fresh sound is a throwback to something of an earlier time. “Burn This Bridge” captures the feeling of a live band from decades past accompanied by a soulful lounge singer who has something to prove. The 20-year old singer songwriter from Brooklyn has a powerful message to those who don’t believe in her. “You lit this fire in me, because you never believed, that there was fire in me, now you can’t put it out.”

Enisa has been working in the studio the past few months shaping her soul-pop sound with producers Julie Hardy and Mike McAllister planning to release a batch of singles through the winter. French Horn Rebellion have come out this week with some serious fire in their new jam ’The Right Time.’ This song has got the moves, it’s got the passion, and asks the question, (the important one) “is it ever really the right time to fall in love?” Well, in our opinion, it is the right time, and that time is right now. Fall in love and call us once you’ve landed off this pop high. Play this jammer at the dance, or at the pool, and especially when you’re in a bad mood, because there’s no way this one will let you down.

Josiah & The Bonnevilles – Cold Blood

This is one of most well-written songs I’ve heard in years. Maybe since Head and The Heart self-titled debut in 2010. Tennessee natives Josiah & The Bonnevilles are now out with a debut of their own, the Cold Blood EP via Vagrant Records. My favorite quote from the artist bio: “Leming writes with the weathered wisdom and unflinching self-realization of an old soul.” Watch the video below and see for yourself. J&TB is an amazing band with an amazing team. This one will be fun to watch develop. Come see them tonight at Mercury Lounge, 8pm set!

courtship. – Stop For Nothing

Stop For Nothing is a tremendous debut from LA Indie Pop duo, courtship. Reminiscent of Starfucker circa 2012, this track has something for everyone. Strong hooks, driving chorus and an epic drop. Songwriters Eli Hirsch (DREAMERS, Ethan Burns) and Micah Gordon (Tobias Jesso Jr.) seem to be on to something special that we’ll certainly be keeping an eye on.
