How do I say this without sounding like a dick? Hot Chip dropped the best set of the weekend at GovBall on Sunday night. I hope you caught it. 75 minutes of the hits culminated in one of the most epic covers of all time. Here’s a recording from their Milwaukee play a few nights earlier. As the winter quickly approaches, we’re reaching out for our warm blankets, finding a cozy spot near the fireplace, and searching for a “mmmm” kind of song that can best set the scene.

Lucky for us, London-based trio, Years & Years, reworked All We Are’s “I Wear You” and transformed the song into a stunning, powerful track that is mellow, warming, and perfect for a cold night, or any night for that matter.

The original track has been stripped entirely – this cover is led by a sweet piano ballad and continues with a mysterious and echoing feel through ambient synths. The beautiful vocals of lead singer, Olly Alexander, help to make this track as wonderful as it is. Take a listen below.

Cory Muro is the drummer for TMD favorite Badboxes. One of my favorite drummers in the game these days. He’s been teasing that he was working on something fun. And here it is. A fucking Lily Allen drum cover. It’s balls out fantastic. I think I’ve watched it about 30 times over the past 24 hours. Be sure to check out his youtube channel for some other gems. I can’t wait to see what he brings out next.

Local H – Team (Lorde cover)

It’s covers like this that make me wonder who really drives the ship? Songwriters or producers? How can one of last year’s top pop songs translate so well to the rock world. Leave it up to Chicago based Local H for having the right vision and running with it. “I remember going down a Lorde rabbit hole on YouTube last summer, and the song that really stuck with me was ‘Team,'” recalls Local H frontman Scott Lucas. “The lyrics killed me. They were everything I’d been wanting to hear someone say in a pop song. I sorta teared up a little. I tried playing an acoustic version at a show in January, but quickly realized that the song was an anthem and should be rocked out. Besides, acoustic Lorde is the Boss’s territory now.”

I’m fairly certain this Lorde cover is part of the Local H live set…but you should see for yourself.

Chad Valley – Your Love (Frankie Knuckles Cover)

On March 31, 2014 Frankie Knuckles passed away. There was an immediate outpouring of love, respect and tributes to the man responsible for modern house music. After a few days the dust settled and people carried on with their lives, as they do. But yesterday, Chad Valley released an absolutely stunning tribute to the man. His cover of “Your Love” gives me the chills. It’s perfect. I really can’t say anything else other than just enjoy the vibes. And Rest In Peace Frankie. Your legend will carry on.

As if CHVRCHES hadn’t given us 15 really great reasons to love them in 2013, they start of 2014 with this epic cover of Do I Wanna Know? It stays true to the original while adding their own personal style. From the brighter sound of Lauren Mayberry’s voice to the unexpected duet that breaks out, this one is intriguing at first but slowly evolves into an irresistible opener to every playlist. I can only hope they break this out at their Coachella set.

Superfood – Fight for Your Right (Beastie Boys Cover)

If you haven’t heard of Superfood, you should make yourself familiar. This cover of the Beastie Boys, Fight For your Right, is just awesome! At first I thought LCD Soundsystem was trying to sneak out an unreleased cover/track. Taking a closer, second listen, it sounds more like the Beastie Boys channeled Medeski, Martin and Wood on Combustication to record a new version of Fight For Your Right.

Whatever Freaky Friday body swapping occurred, I am happy that it did. This cover is an awesome re-imagining of an epic original track. The Infectious Music website explains that “The Midlands four-piece are one of the prime reasons that new British guitar music is looking in such fine health,” and I’m inclined to agree. Superfood crushes this one and this is a track that I would be out of my mind to see live. Put it on the list.

Tame Impala – Stranger In Moscow (Michael Jackson Cover)

Wow. This song really blew me away. I didn’t know what to make of this at first when I saw the description, I mean, The King of Pop is a tough act to follow.

Tame Impala usually impresses, but here they’ve really taken it to the next level. This cover of Michael Jackson‘s, Stranger In Moscow, is a perfect storm of awesome source material, ambient chillwave and excellent vocals. Our friends from Perth really nailed this one! Strap yourself in for something kind of awesome.
