I’ve been listening to this song for a few weeks now, quietly admiring their sweet band name, which for the life of me I thought was “Don Bronco,” not Don Broco. Only upon looking them up for the purposes of this email did I realize my dyslexic error. “Broco” doesn’t make much sense unless you read up on how they named their band (I did, and it’s still not great), while “Bronco” is really a much cooler name. Not only does it immediately invoke images of OJ Simpson speeding down the highway in his white Bronco (Ford is bringing the Bronco back and it’s really awesome if you haven’t checked it out), but there was a cool Australian boxer way back when named Don “Bronco” Johnson. What a name. He was not only a wild swinging fighter who drew big crowds, but also famous for his rodeo riding and his Errol Flynn style mustache (which is regarded as one of the manliest mustaches of all time). More than that, Don Bronco was also ahead of his time through his breaking down of social norms; he was married twice, both to Aboriginal women, not a common occurrence for a white guy in 1950s Australia. Anywho, this Bedford, England band shuffled between several names in their early days, one of which was Don Loco (not bad, sounds like 4Loko). After their guitarist “broke” his wrist playing soccer, they jokingly called themselves Don Broco… See? Not as good as Don Bronco, even if they do seem to be using the whole “bronco” cowboy theme in their video, but what can you do.

In honor of whichever makes you more upset, the RNC or the Cavs winning the championship – tough call there – (hey, at least the NBA doesn’t call themselves “world” champions, like the NFL or MLB, who for some reason, don’t include the rest of the world in their competition :-/ I’m gonna petition my rec soccer league to crown us some meaningless title too. No, we didn’t “win” it technically, but if the KC Royals & Denver Broncos can be World Champs, then my third place indoor over 30 rec league might as well get a title too, right?), comes a song called, you guessed it, “Cleveland, OH” from a band called Little Brother. And in keeping with their name, they sound like they got beat up a lot growing up. LB is an acoustic emo project from the Newcastle, Australia lead singer of the band Trophy Eyes and are signed to Hopeless Records (man are they emo!). So I guess the lesson here is, picking on your younger siblings (besides deserving it) is a way to strengthen their character. And when they succeed, it’s approximately 40% because of your “tough love.”Just ask my sister. She’ll vouch.

If today were an album, I’d name it I’m Sweaty and the Subway’s an Inferno. Kinda like DMX’s It’s Dark and Hell is Hot (remember that gem?). Well today is same same but different. Here are some tunes from a couple Aussies in honor of going to the beach and having fun (Aussies are way better are chillin’ out and relaxin’ all cool), instead of dripping on a subway platform in Union Square next to some shredded tank top wearing, Old Spice-boycotting, hipster who brought his bicycle on the train and keeps sliding his grubby non-manicured hand down the pole and touching yours (come on dude! don’t tell you can’t feel my hand there!? are you serious!? people are the worst…). Braves is a group of lo-fi garage rockers from Perth, Australia who have an EP out called Seapunk; and Alex Lahey is a Best Coast styling beach rocker from Melbourne, Australia whose personal interests, according to Facebook, are “Blue 1999 Toyota Corollas” – dependable car btw. These two helping channel my inner beach. I guess this is what Corona has been talking about all these years…

Let’s say I had a buddy named Lorenz. We’d call him L, since he has a “Z” in his name and that’s silly. If you’d ever meet L, you may not learn that he loves to dance, but he does. This sexy German fellow would put on an air of seriousness, but where he’d feel most at home is standing on a couch at a disco-tech, head slightly lowered, one hand in the air, swaying to the euro electronica dance jams. Well, these dudes Bag Raiders love people like L. The Australian electronica duo have said that playing in America can “be a little strange sometimes” as we Yanks generally sit around “chin-stroking” waiting for the hits; while playing Europe is the polar opposite. Europe has people like L – “a little more knowledgeable when it comes to dance music” – so they can play a whole set of “deeper cuts.” The self professed orchestra/choir/band geeks have come a long way since getting together after meeting in Australian high school (whatever that entails): from playing “wherever they were invited” to their North America Tour starting next month: 3/12 @ Bowery Ballroom.

Joining forces in 2013, obviously influenced by disco & funk, MPP have been doin’ it right for some time now – makin’ tunes that make them happy in the awesomest aussie ways. For some reason the kind of Midnight Pool Party I think of when I listen to their tunes involves skinny dipping in your parent’s pool while they’re out of town with the music blasting and tiki torches lit, or that bottomless party from Harold & Kumar (idk why…). Everything’s fun about these duders. The funky hooks, simple but to the point lyrics, infectious synths, make MPP a summer playlist must have. Plus, everyone will ask you like, “dude, where’d you hear of this dope band?”, and you’ll be like, “from my boy Feli @ The Most Definitely, he’s always hooks me up”, and they’ll be like, “damn, you’re always in the know. that’s so cool of you. you’re so hot “, and you’ll be like, “you know it girl. let’s dance.” Go do ur thing – thank us later

My newest go-to song brings us back to my favorite place that I’ve never been, Australia. Chris Baker, born and raised in Sydney has dropped this gem from his solo project, Billy Fox. The song, Monuments, has a very intriguing opening winding together synth and piano sounds drawing you in. Baker’s wonderful R&B vocals join the mix like Goldilocks’ favorite porridge, not too loud and not too soft but just right. It almost sounds like a cross between LVLF and James Blake which is alright with me any day. I keep wanting to not let the next song play because Monuments is so good. My advice is go to a place with a view, loop this track and revel in it.

Baker has also created a nice visualization for this song if you like to watch as you listen.

Settle back in your most comfortable chair with a nice glass of something and enjoy what this quartet from Brisbane has prepared for us. The members of Mitzi have all taken different roads to get here but I think it’s safe to say that we are all glad they did. Here at TMD, our love for bands from Australia knows no bounds and our affection for Mitzi’s new track, Falling is no exception. It’s soothing synths and effortless vocals are the perfect thing to easy use in to another beautiful summer weekend. So, sit back and enjoy the smooth sounds coming out of your speakers and we won’t hate you for ‘falling’ for this track (I know it’s a terrible pun but I just couldn’t resist). Enjoy!
