Punchline – Tell Me How You Sleep

Although we haven’t heard from him in a while, we’ve been early supporters of Harrison Wargo’s BADBOXES project. But little-known fact, his manager Steve Soboslai is actually the guitar-wielding frontman of Pittsburgh cult band Punchline, a project also featuring BADBOXES live drummer Cory Munro. So we thought we’d keep it in the family and tell you about how great Punchline’s new single and video “Tell Me How You Sleep” is.

Although formerly signed to Fueled By Ramen in the pop-punk era, Punchline has taken a turn, adding synths into the mix in order to create something new and exciting. “Tell Me How You Sleep” is absolute ear-candy featuring Steve’s glossy vocals, an earworm of a hook, and colorful synths that are becoming the new norm in the Punchline reboot.

And yes, one may have blatantly came out in Dec 2013, but too late to make last year’s list. Everyone deserves a fair shake, right? Great. Happy Holidays!

Badboxes – Nassau

Nobody is pushing the boundaries of electro pop further right now than Badboxes. In Violet, their latest album released last week, Harrison Wargo and the boys from Pittsburgh borrow from an array of genres including rock, pop, hip-hop, trap, rap, house & disco. The album reminds me of some of the biggest music moments of the last decade. M83, T.I. (yeah, i said T.I.), MGMT…to name a few. But sometimes a sound is so fresh that its hard to contextualize, and I suspect that might be the case if you haven’t seen Badboxes live. Knowing what the set looks and feels like, I absolutely can’t wait to hear these new tracks live. Keep tabs on these guys for upcoming live dates and be sure to mark the calendar when they come to town.

Badboxes – Trees

It means something when every song a band puts out is your favorite track by that band. Pittsburgh’s finest indie electro rock group has taken it somewhat political with their new single Trees, and I love absolutely everything about it. The ska, the horns, the lyrics, the autotune, its pretty perfect. Have a listen and make sure you read the liner notes (included below for your convenience).

Cory Muro is the drummer for TMD favorite Badboxes. One of my favorite drummers in the game these days. He’s been teasing that he was working on something fun. And here it is. A fucking Lily Allen drum cover. It’s balls out fantastic. I think I’ve watched it about 30 times over the past 24 hours. Be sure to check out his youtube channel for some other gems. I can’t wait to see what he brings out next.

Fun fact: One year ago on May 9th we promoted our first live event. We’ve had a dangerously good time since then and it’s only fitting that a year later, to the day, we will celebrate with one of our favorite indie lineups of all time.

Perhaps you thought Rock was over. Or that guitar solos, haunting bass lines, power crash cymbals and the valiant but chivalrous front-man were dead? Think again. When was the last time you heard an indie crowd roar like a stadium after every song? Spirit Animal is the indie Chili Peppers, its just that simple…and you could not be catching them at a more appropriate venue. Hint: the catwalk at The Westway will be in play like never before.

Next up, our brothers from another mothers, Badboxes. Hailing from Pittsburgh, you’d think they were our neighbors because we’ve had them play 3 of our shows and this will make for number 4. Making them quite literally, our favorite band to work with. That is no coincidence; we cannot get enough of these guys. From the first note of JSMN, I knew I was hooked and we’ve been finding ways to get them back to NYC as often as possible, cause the people need to know. Seeing a Badboxes set is a borderline religious experience. Their brand of Northern Pop gives me goosebumps every time. DO NOT MISS THIS SET.

[PREMIERE] Badboxes – In The North

And we’ve officially come full circle. Last summer we fell in love with Badboxes by way of their debut EP’s opening track, JSMN. Here we are 8 months later and we’re talking about their second release: the JSMN Deluxe EP. I’m proud to premiere this particular track because it’s the last song on the EP and seems like the perfect way to close the loop on this exciting, strange and fantastical journey we’ve been on. Perfecting his Northern Pop sound to a tee, frontman and brainchild Harrison Wargo leaves us just the way we began: with a playful, whimsical melody that leaves us starving for more. I guess we’ll just have to wait to see what they’ve got up their sleeves next. Be sure to catch them at our SXSW showcase in two weeks. Can’t wait to see them live again!

Badboxes – Too Much Love

Last year, we went all in on Badboxes, one of my favorite bands going right now. The Pittsburgh project of producer Harrison Wargo has gone from a twinkle in his eye to his three piece band playing sold out shows at The Bowery Ballroom and I can’t say I’m surprised. We loved them so much we booked them on two TMD shows and put out a single with them. Talk about putting your money where your mouth is. And here we are, with 2014 getting into swing, and they go ahead and release JSMN Deluxe. An extended play with 7 new tracks to melt your face with their signature northern pop stylings. Get yourself a copy here.

This tune, which premiered with our homies over at All Things Go yesterday is just straight up sexy. I’ve said before that Badboxes reminds of a combination of George Michael, Daft Punk and Passion Pit. Well now that they’ve added the trumpet, I’m throwing a Capital Cities curveball in there. Sounds like a band made in heaven. Be on the lookout for big things from these guys this year.

Tim’s Essential Tracks of 2013

So that was 2013 huh? Pretty solid year. I’ve been working on this list all year. Full disclosure, if you’re looking for the obvious “Best of 2013″ list, this is not for you. This is more about the tracks that might have slipped through the cracks, the tracks that never quite got the attention they deserved. Some of them are more obvious than others (read: Daft Punk). While others, need to be heard (read: Streets of Laredo).

How do you boil down a year to 15 songs? In my case, you don’t. You make a soundcloud best of and a Spotify Best of list. We had a banner year personally, professionally and musically. A lot of firsts that I am extremely thankful for. Rather than sit here and wax poetic on what was definitely the best year of my life, why don’t you just sit back and listen to these tunes that helped make 2013 so special?

Hawaii Mix

Hi boys and girls, I’ve been a little busy for the past couple of weeks moving cross country and taking a little trip to Hawaii. Demands on my time have limited my posts but in every cloud there is a silver lining. In this particular case, the Hawaii Mix is it! I’ve popped together a few songs that have been the soundtrack to my quest to drink every rum and pineapple drink this small island (Kauai) can produce. They’ve done me a good turn (the music and the drinks) so I thought I should share them with you. Hopefully, they can bring a ray of sunshine into your office and if you can’t get to Hawaii right now, it’s the next best thing.

I’ve started slow here, like you would if you were up as the sun was just peeking over the horizon. The tempo climbs as we move in the the early afternoon and slows down for a delicious sunset. There are some mellow tracks and some bangers in there, something for everyone! If you don’t have time for the whole mix in one sitting I would especially recommend Always by Panama. It’s not to be missed. Enjoy the rainbow and the jams and as they say here in Hawaii, Mahalo!
