Boston Manor: (London) Underground no Longer

Confusingly not from Boston but Blackpool, Boston Manor are also not named after the London tube station in Ealing, but just a working song title they stole from a friend’s band (not as cool). This quintet is another welcome addition to the sweet UK rock scene dominating the genre these days, so much so that they got snatched up by Cali-based outfit, Pure Noise Records, who are repping a bunch of cool up-and-coming youngsters. Their recent EP is pretty sweet. They’d been listening to a lot of Thrice and Brand New, so that’s why it sounds so good (case you were wondering). To any of you out there looking to start a band, the three tips [when asked] from Boston Manor are: 1) play shows, 2) write as much as you can, and 3) “don’t be an arsehole.” Good life lessons to live by: go DO stuff, and don’t be a jerk.

Years & Years – Shine

London electronica trio (an “electrio” or “electrotrio”?) Years & Years are out with a new track. After a few EPs and lots of online listens, their debut album will finally drop in July. The band formed in 2010 when one of the dudes moved from down under to London and began trolling Craigslist “looking for ledge mates to get wankered and jam with,” only for his friend Peter (who’s a proper LAD) to suggest some bantz and a cheeky Nando’s. After a night out, they asked their current lead singer to join the band when the Aussie heard him singing in the shower like an “absolute ledge”. Not sure why he was in the shower too… At least my sister still has a chance of being in a band. Freaking Queen-Bey in the shower.

Only Real – Yesterdays

Consisting of “Only Real Guys” from West London, and led by a smug-face-makin’ adorably ginger dude, Only Real are back out with a fun summer sounding EP. His tunes are “baby music for babies” and “guitar music for people who don’t like guitars”… idk what that’s supposed to mean. Regardless, Only Real is mainly one dude named Niall Galvin – a self claimed “sick guy!” and chill drowsy-rap-popster. He’s exactly what you’d envision of a Cali beach bummin’, garage band playin’, long board cruisin’, backwards hat wearin’, slacker – if he was from West London but his identical twin was in SoCal and they could like, “feeeel” each other; just like Lindsay Lohan in The Parent Trap… (I have a sister, ok? chill). At least he’s not recording songs in his bedroom anymore.

Swiss Lips – Honey

Do you think Swiss kissing is the same as French kissing, just more, like, financially conservative and less “let’s not work and just have red wine and cigarettes”..? Or is it more a blend of all the boring parts of French, German and Italian kissing? Idk why a band from Manchester calls themselves Swiss Lips, but they’re super cool. The electro-pop dance quintet were originally known as Ten Bears, but changed it when they couldn’t figure out why they’d only get asked to play at gay clubs and the promoters kept asking when the real band was arriving…. Under their new nom de plume (brought the French back – see what I did there? they’ve played with Bastille, Neon Trees, and other big boys. Check out the new album out now. Or don’t. Whatever.
