A Bed-stuy Brooklyn native, Leikali47 is an anonymous rapper, currently in favor with Mr. Jay Z himself (he put one of her tracks on his summer playlist). Leikali47 (pronounce Leh-kay-lee) wears a ski mask (following the trend that 21 Pilots and Masked Intruder paved) and when probed, claims to wear it “at all times.” Just like Masked Intruder, the media doesn’t actually know who she is. The similarities to Masked Intruder end there though, as MI are an outlaw band on the run from the cops, play dopey pop punk, and hail from Wisconsin; while Leikali47, a rapper, wears the mask so people focus on her music and not her, so she says at first. It seems to also help with her performance and stage fright, as she was always a shy kid growing up and mostly a loner. I have to think those folks performing masked, Slipknot included, must have to lotion-up all the time, have tons of spares, and really struggle with acne, right? Why do we wear masks though? You could say the use of a mask is the physical manifestation of the concept of providing the wearer the means to transform themselves and their personality. Masks have been used since the dawn of humankind for use in everything from medicine, religion, simply decoration, and in this case, entertainment. Maybe in this case she is protecting herself more than she leads on. She can transform herself in to a new person without fear of judgement or ridicule outside of her artistry (I’d imagine a welcome reprieve many artists would like to enjoy), not to mention flipping the script as a female artist, where judging music and looks tend to go hand in hand. So ya. Her new track “Girl Gang” is pretty cool and mixes lots of sounds. I can’t say I’m huge on her other jams, but GG is tight.

My mother always said “nothing good happens after midnight” as a way to keep me home on the weekends playing gin rummy and watching TGIF instead out clubbing like a regular 17 year old. Thankfully for all current teens out there, Bear Hands has amended this idiom to 2 AM with their new song – you guessed it – “2AM.” Now you can play gin AND get to the club when they open doors at 12! Too late for me though, since I’m now addicted to Baccarat (thanks mom) and too old for clubs… The Brooklyn based non-barbershop quartet originally formed up at Wesleyan, self-produced their first album “Distraction,” bounced around between a few labels, and settled on doing it all themselves, launching their own label called Spensive Sounds, on which they’ll release their new album “You’ll Pay For This” in April.

You can’t believe everything Feli Says. True Story.

At long last, Brooklyn synth-pop duo Chairlift is about ready to gift us with a new album in the form of Moth (due out January 22, 2016 via Columbia). Though it’s been almost four long years since their last album Something, the band has recently released two singles from their forthcoming album, the latest of which is “Romeo.”

The song is supposedly written from the perspective of the Greek mythological character, Atalanta. The myth says that since Atalanta was a proud single lady who was more interested in hunting and being in the wilderness than settling down, that she would only marry a suitor who could out run her, and those that could not were killed.

HAHAHA…and you guys thought dating in 2015 was rough. Sheesh.

The frenetic opening of the song is sure to get you pumped up to start your daily (ok, weekly/bi-monthly/post-new years) workout routine. Go ahead and add it to whatever workout mix you’ve curated on Spotify, and be prepared for an all out sprint on the treadmill. If your motivation is lacking pretend the lyrics to the song are the truth, and if you don’t run your hardest you’ll end up betrothed to a 5-hour Energy guzzling stranger who cheated his/her way into your heart.

Check out “Romeo” below, as well as their first single from Moth, “Ch-Ching.”

Double Dose of Dames: Tuesday Edition, brought to you by dope ladies who sing good songs. Catey Shaw – the bisexual Brooklynite ukulele subway performer – and POLICA – twin city synthpopper named for the Polish word for “work ethic.” What do they have in common? Well Channy Leanagh (POLICA frontwoman) is a big fan of the radical Canadian feminist Shulamith Firestone, author of the 1970 book Dialectic of Sex: The Case for Feminist Revolution. Once she opened up the book, she couldn’t put it down, even naming her last album after it. And well, Catey Shaw is kinda the embodiment of that feminist freedom. Catey is also from Brooklyn, where there is a Shulamith School for Girls (albeit no direct relation, although a good word coincidence, it’s an Orthodox Jewish school & “shulamith” translate approximately to “peace”). Shulamith Firestone had some pretty out there ideas, for instance she described pregnancy as “barbaric;” and with regards to patriarchal societal structures imposed on women through their biology and the disadvantages caused by pregnancy, childbirth, and child-rearing: “she advocated the use of cybernetics to carry out human reproduction in laboratories as well as the proliferation of contraception, abortion, and state support for child-rearing to enable them to escape their biologically determined positions in society.” — The More You Know —

Junior Prom, a magical time when (acne) blossoming youngsters experience their first taste of real world dating: asking equally nervous and insecure jerkholes to maybe? go to prom with them, while everyone balances their potential better offers and invites to come… then realizing you don’t have a date and the big day’s ALMOST here (UGH!), you say “…Yes?” to Jimmy, only to be asked by Chad THAT SAME AFTERNOON!! OMG FML… and then obviously say “Yes!” to Chad and text Jimmy: “Sorry… I just can’t right now (insert random emoji).” Only for Chad to realize Susie now wants to go with him and Susie is like, SO much prettier than you… So you text Jimmy what time he’s picking you up and pretend like you never told him to get lost. Anyways, this Junior Prom is a indie rock duo from Brooklyn.

His pals convinced him it was “ok to drink copious amounts of alcohol and make everyone within a 30 ft radius uncomfortable.” So if I got this straight, he get’s hammed up, and makes little hip swaying jams, then wakes up with no recollection of the night’s events. I don’t have much info on this dude, but it seems he’s only recently gettin’ the ball rolling, with a couple 4-track EPs and some guest spots.

Mas Ysa, a Montreal native and current Brooklyn resident, has given us a Tale of Two Songs – that’s not the name of it, just what I’m calling it. There’s just something about this song. Can’t peg it down. The way it builds with some occasional background Peruvian flute band. Then at 2 minutes, when it slows down, and pumps that space ship air horn sounding like the trailer from Ridley Scott’s Prometheus (which I wish there was more of btw [both the air horn & Prometheus]. Especially at 2:20), then kicks it up a notch with what appears to be some cousin of a yazz-flute… (right? that not Ron Burgundy doing a little ham n’ eggs? “East Harlem shake-down. E-Flat. Let’s keep the cymbals splashy, and Jerry, let’s take the base line for walk.”) Pretty sure that’s him. Basically this Mas Ysa character loves: South Park, SciFi, and Will Ferrell – and combined them all in to one.

Delorean remix – totally different. But nice.

Really digging Tei Shi’s second single. Honestly, really digging Tei Shi (Brooklyn’s own Val Teicher) in general. I moonlight as a blogger but during the day I work at a print shop, and I got to know Val a bit when she printed a mini-series of artsy thank-you cards to the people that have been supporting her music career. Bad-ass, huh? This track has a nice pulsing beat that’s getting me nicely through the final stretch of this hungover Friday. Take a listen-see and have a nice post-Halloween weekend.
