Chicago native, Lupe Fiasco, was born Wasalu Muhammad Jaco, and rose to fame in 2006 after his album “Food & Liquor,” which coincidentally were the only two things on my New Year’s Resolution list. Unlike the majority of bands I feature, Fiasco is no fledgling, starving artist. Beyond rapping, he runs a company called Righteous Kung-Fu, that designs fashions, sneakers, toys, comic books, other random stuff, and video games (Lupe loves himself some video games and was a competitive Street Fighter V gamer – he uses Ken – and is competing next week at GENESIS 4, after his challenge to play Super Smash Bros. was accepted by the current champ, Gonzalo “ZeRo” Barrios – he will be using Ryu). Mr. Fiasco has a major footwear deal with Reebok, using other rappers to design and promote gear. The anti-establishment, Grammy winning rapper was removed from stage while performing a 30-minute rendition of a song that contained anti-Obama lyrics, while in DC, performing at Obama’s 2013 inauguration… I wonder if DT asked Mr. Fiasco if he’d perform, or maybe they thought his name was a little too on the nose for tomorrow. This new song came out earlier this year and is the happy fresh jam needed today.

Welp, there is little to no mention of the past, present or future of new singer/songwriter/producer/ DJ, BISHØP, and her new track “F.F.Y. (Feeling For You).” The only information I can glean is from her Twitter page, which lists “Portlandia” as her location (assuming Oregon, unless she’s from the fictional Fred Armison city), so it’s safe to assume that (1) she’s upbeat and nice, but doesn’t realize it, (2) has a way too close relationship with her pet, (3) is super pretentious and snobby when it comes to coffee, protests, and recycling, and (4) probably rolls around town on a penny farthing, or some other stupid-style bike. Although this BISHØP (pronounced “bishop”) is not necessarily famous just yet, we will look at some (in)famous bishops from the past. Who knows, maybe we’ll learn a thing or two. During the middle ages (5th to 15th century), being a Bishop was good business. Essentially, as a Bishop, you’d threaten an ignorant person with eternal burning, and he’ll give you some money to feel safe again via “indulgences.” Martin Luther (remember him? the white one?) is remembered because of this very thing. In 1517 Luther wrote to his Bishop protesting the sale of indulgences, including a copy of what later became know as the Ninety-five Theses, originally titled Disputation of Martin Luther on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences. The story told in Sunday school was that he nailed the Ninety-five Theses on the door of a church and then it spread like wildfire (this has been mostly disproved), same dude though. Anywho, those Bishops were corrupt dudes, and there’s a solid chance all Christians would be Catholic were it not for Señor Luther and the subsequent Protestant Reformation. More bad dude Bishops are the inquisitors that denied Joan or Arc the right to counsel and went ahead with a trial they had no evidence to support, then burned her at the stake for heresy. Then there’s the humanoid cyborg Bishop, from the Ridley Scott series of “Alien” movies with Sigourney Weaver, whom we were never quite sure whose side he was on (probly also bad), and who had that sweet finger-stabbing-knife-trick (that everyone stabbed themselves trying to replicate). Last but maybe least we’ve got the mostly sacrificial chess piece, the bishop. Well, maybe it’s only sacrificial to me because I’m not good at chess and he’s constantly getting sacrificed.

If this BISHØP can learn a little from all those bishops, then she’ll probably see the black-souled underbelly of the music biz, extort her way to success, change her name, and sacrifice some pathetic sap in her stead, just like the rest of them.

Midweek blues got you jonesin’ for that poolside fiesta you went to on Sunday? The one with sweet jams, cool breezes, cold drinks and hard bodies? I feel you. Except I don’t have a pool. Soho House won’t return my emails. And the hotel pool across the street wants to charge me $320 to sit in a chair. No matter. My apartment’s A/C barely works, so I just leave the air off and sit in the tub with a cocktail, shades on, music playing from my cell phone (in a solo cup to pump up the jams obvi) and a handheld fan blowing recycled air on my neck. Our lives are basically the same. I just have the decency to lie about it on Instagram is all. My bathtub/pool party playlist includes Goldroom’s new jam, “Silhouette.” Goldroom, not to be confused with Goldhouse (seriously with the names guys!?), another DJ whom we have visited with, is a Boston-bred nu-disco and tropical house DJ. Mr. Room lists his musical influences as, “basically any famous and cool musician in the last 30 years.” No, that’s not his actual quote, but it might as well have been with the list he provided… smh

Since Gold and “home related stuff” is a thing, I guess my DJ name will be Goldenshower.

Do you have the post-holiday blues? The “no-longer long weekend” shakes? The “why is everyone emailing me? don’t they realize yesterday was a holiday!? I’m not a machine goddammit!” Well this Canadian mystery man, Jeff Hartford, aka ATTLAS, will help cool you down with his new lyric-less jam. The Canuck got stuck in in the Mau5trap (DeadMau5’s label), and for a while had people thinking he actually was Mr. Mau5 himself, releasing tunes under a shadow moniker, but alas, he’s a real person. If you need another reason to like Jeff, Jeff is really in to Taylor Swift and inspired by movie soundtracks. His super chill Star Wars themed song, “Sunset Over Manaan” throws in some Han Solo dialogue here and there, and today’s jam, his new single out last week, “Ryat,” is also pretty nice and easy going to get you through whatever scaries you may be experiencing. Good luck.

That’s all Feli has to Say about that

About a year and a half ago I posted LANY’s first mega hit single “ILYSB” (I Love You So Bad) and info on how they started this band as an incognito Soundcloud account, and actually thought they were getting catfished when some rando UK labels came a’knockin (they weren’t). Now LANY is selling out shows from LA to NY (get it? LANY… no, for real, that’s what their name means. Look it up if you don’t believe me. They wanted a four letter name, and considered TTYL for a hot minute, then decided they “didn’t want to be 13 for the rest of our lives“. Smart choice.). So I guess, you’re welcome LANY, for getting your name out there and singlehandedly racking up your Spotify listens in to the millions. After appearing on FSL, their career skyrocketed (!! not surprising though really) supporting acts like Ellie Goulding, Twin Shadow, X Ambassadors, Halsey, and a whole slew of festivals. Well, their new single has a cool name too, and also the phrase I say when chickenheads come a’cluckin: “yeah, babe, no way.” And if you haven’t heard “WHERE THE HELL ARE MY FRIENDS” (apologies on the all caps :-/), I’ve included it too.

There isn’t much to know about the 90’s nodding, Goo alluding, Yuck guitaring, semi-shoegazing trio Teenage Wrist (that’s basically ALL of the things to describe them:-/). A collaborative side project of some dudes from Colorado who full-time other bands, Teenage Wrist formed up in 2015 and are really just getting their feet wet with one EP. The thing I really wanna know is where their name came from. It just sounds ominous to me… especially given their brooding sound. And since there’s exactly ONE interview available online, I will take the opportunity to “interview” them in my mind:

“So, since this is side project, are you guys ever gonna spend any real time doing this? Or is it just random fun that fans shouldn’t really get excited about?” – “ya.. idk man. we’re just a couple a guys who really like Sbarro, i guess.”

“Cool cool. Me too. Highway rest stops are dope. So your name is pretty heavy, unless is supposed to be ironic, which wouldn’t make much sense. What’s up with that?” – “sometimes you just get inspired to be something more than just what you are. you want to embody the essence of a time long gone. a time that maybe never was or will be.”

“Ya umm, for sure, for sure. I guess I can see that. So like, what’s that mean to you?” – “if you could just BE apart, and fill the void between the past and present, wouldn’t you?”

Totes.

2. [Of Coffee] be prepared in a percolator…

Let’s get this straight, a musician who [claims] the fruit of their labor embodies the essence of distilled rainwater in its purest form. Nothing sounds more refreshingly soothing; my thoughts exactly while listening to “What I do.” Luscious vocals lull us on a cloud of choral-soulful-electro/synth-chill-folk-alt ~ just fabulousness. I haven’t heard the organ included in any releases of late; brava, Leach. The variety of instruments, vocal styles, attention to detail, and ultimately raw talent demonstrate an artist ensnared in the vastness of musical possibility. I predict a non-conformist, Sherlock; Millennial Spirituals.

Wait no longer; Hot off the press!

Est. London, UK

How is your 2016 going? I heard today that 20% of the year is over… leaving 80% for [some] sensible decisions about: “health,” work, lo0o0o0ove, politics, and if there’s time, you! Besides successfully cooking unburned chili and finishing 1 book with my students (!! screaming internally !!) … not much for me. Enough about me, let’s talk about you – but first, from the pit of darkness – a slap of soul sparks my sedentary thoughts back to sense; not to mention, fierce undertones of funk free your bones to moo0ve. Finally, shall we?

I’m impressed and excited by Seramic’s sound. They first released “People Say” on New Year’s Day (or Dec. 30th whichever is more badass). More recently, 11 days ago to be precise, they’ve graced our cochlea with a groovier approach; a unique sound in our era of synthemaxiwaawaaaa..what kind of pedals? Which brings me to my focal point: “Waiting.” Listen as you read, this London-based group is both mystical in physicality as they are in talent – show yourself! You can find Seramic at a few upcoming underground/bridge festivals I may or may not have frequented in my London life, but to preserve the sanctity of London’s vibrant speakeasy scene, I’ll stop myself there.

Despite the fact an 1/8th of the year is complete, it still feels like just the beginning, and what a way to kickoff 2016, Seramic. Bon a petit, New York.

I present to you, Moon Walkers for some 2016 charmé[d] (tenses: ing, s, ed) listening. The name comes from what I can envision would be the perfect (not to everyone) playlist for my first walk on the moon. Don’t make me wait too long, Branson.

2016 just keeps throwing curve balls our way, so why not take ourselves out of the present, and think for a moment. Thank you and R.I.P. Don Addis for our adapted image.

Playlist Skim:

– Highlighted artist: Raleigh Ritchie a.k.a. hip, hip, hurrah – Jacob Anderson! I am thoroughly enjoying the hype of his sound.

– Watching Miike Snow’s come back has been lush! He’s on tour currently, ahem.

– Throwing it back to Beautiful Girls has sparked my fantasy of quitting my job, moving to Australia, and becoming a surf instructor. 2016 goals? Anyone with me?

– You like eclectic, eh? You’ll like this; listen and think.

Out with her first solo EP is the 22 year-old Aussie volcanist (I mean vocalist), Nicole Millar (you may recognize her voice from Peking Duk’s tripled platinum song “High”). I coulda sworn a volcanist was the same as a volcanologist… ends up it’s just a made up word (and I’m dumb) :-/ and an easy typo from “vocalist”. Although it’d be pretty cool if she was a trendy singer/volcanologist, right?! Especially cuz then her new single “Tremble” would have a sweet double meaning (a double entendre if you will, given it’s risque nature of course) and not just the whole linear sex/missing you motif. But what can you do… She’s fresh off opening for Troye Sivan and her tunes are prime for my Girl Electrochill playlist. With a new solo career Nicole is just gonna wing it, and ya know, see what happens.

“Listen Piper, there’s a big difference between winging it and seeing what happens. Now let’s see what happens.” – MacGruber

If Feli Says something and no one is around to hear it, does he make a sound?
