As if CHVRCHES hadn’t given us 15 really great reasons to love them in 2013, they start of 2014 with this epic cover of Do I Wanna Know? It stays true to the original while adding their own personal style. From the brighter sound of Lauren Mayberry’s voice to the unexpected duet that breaks out, this one is intriguing at first but slowly evolves into an irresistible opener to every playlist. I can only hope they break this out at their Coachella set.

2013 was a year of nostalgia, for me personally and also in the music that accompanied me throughout, more so than any year I can remember. This year was also my first here at the Most Definitely, which I can’t thank Max and Tim enough for. In putting together my hour-long 2013 year-end playlist, I really tried to focus on this retro-yet-new and exciting feel that embodied the past year. From the ’70s sound of the Preatures; ’80s of Oliver, Holy Ghost! and Wild Nothing; to the ’90s of Cut Copy and Jagwar Ma, it is all there — refreshingly nostalgic, yet freshly new.

Hopefully, this playlist captures the crazy ride that was 2013 and joins the ranks of Tim’s, Max’s, and Jason’s. Give it a listen below and here’s to what 2014 has to offer!

CHVRCHES burst onto the scene over the past year with their slice of catchy synth-pop, but British producer, Tourist, has taken one of the group’s punchier songs and turned it into a dazzling slower burner. The slowed down pace and piano backing gives singer Laura Mayberry’s vocals a place to shine and highlights the strong lyrics, all before the song is driven home with a U.K. garage beat and escalating layers.

We’ve all felt chills at a particularly good hook in a song, and that’s an awesome feeling. But I think you’re supposed to consult a doctor if the chills last the entire song. Especially difficult if you have the song on repeat. The last time that happened to me was when I first heard “The Mother We Share” by CHVRCHES. Makes sense; Munich, Germany-based Claire toured with CHVRCHES this summer. This is carefully-crafted, uniquely-chorded dance pop, perfect for late summer nostalgia. Also, just check out their Facebook – these guys look like some of the awesomest people to chill with. Games is out today in the US, so grab it from iTunes!

I know I have been harping on this band lately, with a post on their other releases “On the Run” and “Supreme,” but I’ll be damned if every song they’ve put out so far hasn’t been among the best of the summer. Their latest, “Atlantis” is another great warm weather dream-pop jam. After all, who doesn’t love a little saxophone in July? Postiljonen’s debut Skyer (due out July 5th) is one of my most anticipated debuts this year, second only to CHVRCHES’ The Bones of What You Believe.

MS MR – Hurricane (Yeasayer remix)

Yes, there is no shortage remixes of MS MR songs, especially “Hurricane,” (including this fantastic one from CHVRCHES.) Yet, this week fellow Brooklynites Yeasayer tried their hand at mixing the lead-single off of Secondhand Rapture. The result is an engaging, deeper, and darker track that builds to a cinematic closing – certainly a different direction than CHVRCHES’ synth-pop version. Take a listen below and see how you think this version stacks up to the others.

When I saw CHVRCHES at the Mercury Lounge in March I remember thinking that one track in particular was even better that Recover and Mother We Share (okay, maybe not Mother We Share, that song is perfect). I had no idea what the song title was but it got me extremely excited for the album release this fall. Im here to announce that Gun, while stellar, is not the track i’m thinking of. There’s another gem out there and I can’t wait. Get psyched folks, this debut CHVRCHES album is going to be ridiculous.
