Every now and then a band comes along and completely demands your attention. Crooked Colours is exactly that. I first fell in love in March and I knew immediately that they were doing something different. They are carving out their own extremely unique sound. Constantly pushing the boundaries of whatever genre you’d like to put them in. I’m completely captivated, I’m in awe of where the songs take me. It’s bands like Crooked Colours that make me regain that passion and admiration for those that continue to break the mold. Southern Westchester Music Festival with East Love

Over the last couple of months I’ve had the pleasure of watching the guys from East Love navigate this crazy industry we call music. From their big debut in the city at our very own Webster Hall, to arguing about tones and breaks in rehearsals, I’ve been there. So when they invited me to watch them perform on their home turf in Westchester NY, I jumped at the chance.

Now if you haven’t heard of SOWE (Southern Westchester) Music Festival, don’t worry because I hadn’t either. Situated right in Harbor Island Park, the festival was surrounded by ocean, beautiful boats and plenty of sun. It was also packed with food trucks, local beer, corn hole, and most importantly music.

I arrived just as East Love came on to the stage, recognizing the lead singer Lukas’s voice immediately. And though the festival had just opened up, people started to flock to the music. As it goes with most festivals you don’t get the full listen, so the guys set was short on time but definitely not quality. They played their released singles ‘Little Less’, ‘Straight Lines’ and their newest ‘Unbroken’- be on the look out a for a full album soon. Now I could go through and break down my thoughts song by song, beat by beat, minute by minute- but that wouldn’t do these guys justice. Your best bet is to take a listen. East Love loves to be on stage and their energy is intoxicating so I recommend seeing them live, you won’t be disappointed.

That’s right! CMJ is a month out and TMD’s annual Showcase at Knitting Factory will be where it’s at Friday night. I must say, we had an especially fun time booking this one, taking full advantage of an amazing pool of Aussie talent that so gracefully descends upon our city each October. CMJ Show Announcements

So while you thought we were all busy just working on Escape Music Festival we’ve also been hard at work putting together not one but TWO CMJ showcases. The first of which is going to be held on Wednesday October 22nd at Brooklyn Bowl. The lineup is quite stacked with talent from near and far and we’re stoked to finally announce it!

At Brooklyn Bowl we’ve got a strong lineup starting with Canadian rockers In-Flight Safety. We’ve been high on their brand of introspective rock music for a few months now and are thrilled to welcome them stateside. Next up, we’ve got Brooklyn sensation AYER who has taken the town by storm in a very real way over the past couple of months. We had him play Brooklyn Night Bazaar back in August and believe me, the set does not disappoint. Then we’ve got LA electro pop duo Carousel making the trip east to light up the bowl. Should I keep going? VERITE. Another barn burner of an act out of NYC sold out her debut last month at our Escape kick off with Popshop. The hype is real. Let me take a breathe. OK I’m good. MOTHXR is bringing us around 3rd base with their mysteriously cool beats and and Penn Badgley’s chops. It only gets better. Then we’ve got an EXCLUSIVE play from BC’s very own Teen Daze. With vibed out dreamy synths, we’ll be whisked away into sonic bliss.

Junior Prom – Shelia Put The Knife Down

While everyone is enjoying themselves at CMJ, I thought it appropriate to share a song from a great band from Brooklyn. Junior Prom is set to release their first record soon and have shared a single with us off of that forthcoming album. Shelia Put the Knife Down brings a lot of electro pop, dance-y vibes in addition to some rather irreverent lyrics. It’s hard not to tap your toes as you listen to this track. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do. And if not, just put the knife down…please.

GEMS – Medusa

We first fell in love with DC based duo GEMS back in early November of 2012 shortly after hurricane Sandy ravaged NYC, turned life upside down, cause a major blackout and changed the landscape of NYC forever. It was oddly perfect timing in a weird way. They’ve got a dark and haunting sound that just fit those times perfectly. Now fast forward a year later and they’re playing our showcase tomorrow night at Brooklyn Bowl and we couldn’t be more excited to catch them live. I’d go out on a limb here and say Medusa is their strongest release to date.

We must have done something right this weekend. Because the internets gave us a beatiful gift to get us through this dark and dreary Monday. NEW COIN music. That’s quite alright with me. If you’re a TMD regular, you know we’re pretty high on the handsome boys from Nashville (not like that). We had the pleasure of hosting their NYC live debut back in August and they basically stole the show. Now I’m REALLY excited! Last month we SOLD OUT The Knitting Factory with Betty Who, Joywave & Future Screens. Well now it’s time to announce our 2013 CMJ Lineup. It seems like every show we’re going bigger. This time is no different. It’s CMJ and we’re not pulling any punches. We’ve got eitght (8) bands lined up for you and I could not be more excited about this lineup. Each band hand picked from the pages of TMD and brought right to the streets of Brooklyn. This show is going to be all time. And to up the ante, we partnered with our West Coast blogger from another mother Beautiful Buzzz to really turn things up.

Lineup Breakdown:

Strange Talk We caught the Aussie rockers last year at CMJ and we were blown away by their live set. The energy is amazing and they might sound better live than they do on their albums. To say you’re in for a treat is an understatement. I’m honored and so stoked to have them be a part of our showcase!

We fell in love with Little Daylight at first listen. Based out of Brooklyn they are in the midst of taking over the electro pop world with their soaring synths and sexy vocals. Couldn’t be more excited to catch this set.

Rochester, NY based Joywave has been in our sites for a while now and when we had them play our sold out show two weeks ago, it was very clear that they needed an encore. Their unique brand of electro rock and hip hop is undeniably delicious and impossible not to dance to.

Bad Suns comes to us all the way from Los Angeles and I’m very excited for their live set. They remind me of a throwback to Incubus in only the best of ways. The first notes of their hit ‘Cardiac Arrest’ brought me back to a time and a place. Blending modern pop with late 90’s rock never sounded so god damn good.

What can I say about ASTR. They are as New York as it gets. They lit the internet on fire earlier this year with their haunting smash, ‘Operate’ and the rest is history. They blend hip hop, R&B and electro into a sexy new sound that has got Rihanna watching the throne. Don’t sleep on this.

What up Night Drive?! You may be familiar with the Austin based duo from our label when they remixed Steel Phantoms back in August. Or maybe you’ve copped their insanely good EP that was recently released. Either way, there is no denying their talent. I caught them at Glasslands on Friday, and when I say you’re in for a treat, that’s an understatement.

Story of The Running Wolf: I actually don’t know where to begin when talking about this LA duo. ‘Stratospheric’ is in the running for song of the year. And as for video of the year, it takes it in a land slide. We’ve been trying to get these LA homeboys to play the East Coast for almost a year. FINALLY they make their NYC debut. We could not be more thrilled to have them.

What can I tell you about Pittsburgh’s Badboxes? I can tell you that if you miss this set, you’ve failed. They played our August show and their energy is unmatched. Their debut single JSMN has been on loop for months now and it’s still as good as the first time I heard it. So excited to see these guys again. Trust, you need to be there.

But wait, there’s more. Just when you thought I was finished, I’m gonna punch you in the mouth with some Dart Party. Resident DJ to the stars. To say we’re lucky to have the enigmantic savant behind the ones and twos is to like saying I’m happy we have oxygen. It’s just absolutely CRUCIAL. His infectious sets keep the people moving and he’s building a strong track record for face melting after parties and bring the JAMS all night long. You’ve been warned. (I’m not really going to punch you in the mouth. That was just hyperbole.)

We’ve also got Deli Radio, Dos Equis, BK Booth & Solé Bicycles on board as some super rad sponsors to help really turn this thing out.

Robert Delong – Basically, I

We didn’t know a Sega Genesis joystick, Nintendo Wii remote and neon face paint could sound so damn pimp. Robert Delong’s solo mission absolutely slayed Santos Party House last night at the All Things Gold CMJ showcase. The music stands out on its own but the live show will “basically…change how you feel, about everything.” See for yourself.
