2013 was a year of nostalgia, for me personally and also in the music that accompanied me throughout, more so than any year I can remember. This year was also my first here at the Most Definitely, which I can’t thank Max and Tim enough for. In putting together my hour-long 2013 year-end playlist, I really tried to focus on this retro-yet-new and exciting feel that embodied the past year. From the ’70s sound of the Preatures; ’80s of Oliver, Holy Ghost! and Wild Nothing; to the ’90s of Cut Copy and Jagwar Ma, it is all there — refreshingly nostalgic, yet freshly new.

Hopefully, this playlist captures the crazy ride that was 2013 and joins the ranks of Tim’s, Max’s, and Jason’s. Give it a listen below and here’s to what 2014 has to offer!

Is it a fetish, is it an obsession, who knows? All I know is that I feel like the holidays came early this year. Cut Copy and Strange Talk are touring around the US, and I keep stumbling over great new tracks put out by Aussie bands. This one comes to us by way of Perth. Sun City has created an awesome downbeat dance tune for us. I can’t help but get caught up in Colour Blind‘s, almost tropical, groove. Anyone looking the window of my apartment right now must be confused. Pregnant lady asleep on the couch and strange man dancing around, headphones on, with his laptop. Such is life…

The Magic doesn’t stop there though. It turns out that Sun City can turn out a great remix, just listen to what they’ve done to Pigeon‘s Curtain Call. If the name Pigeon sounds familiar that’s because it’s the main band of Danny Harley, the man behind TMD fave, Kite String Tangle. This song just bleeds a solo dance in the middle of a circle of people on the dance floor. I can’t stop baby!

And I have just one more for you. All We See is another exuberant dance track and one that I could not, in good conscience, leave off of this post. Dance away people, I don’t want to be the only one!

Lost in the shuffle of releases this past week (see Arcade Fire) was Cut Copy’s latest and the announcement of a new album. Free Your Mind and the title track were dropped via the ever-growing public ‘art’ method with billboards across the globe. The song “Free Your Mind” signals a shift from synth-pop to something more akin to a dance-y Tame Impala. This should come as no surprise since Tame Impala producer Dave Friedmann worked with Cut Copy for Free Your Mind. Either way, this, along with “Let Me Show You” show a true progression for a band on their 4th album. Give “Free Your Mind” a listen below and keep an eye out for the 11/5 release of the full-length LP.

What is that?! New Cut Copy?! This morning, Cut Copy returned with their first single since 2011’s Zonoscope titled “Let Me Show You.” At last month’s Pitchfork Music Festival, the band released the song through freshly pressed vinyls – which resulted in low quality youtube videos of the song. That all changed though when Cut Copy (or Modular People) put the real studio version up on soundcloud a couple of hours ago. “Let Me Show You” is a genre-bending dance song that can be divided into 3 parts that break down and build up over a wandering 6 minutes. It’s pretty fantastic. Let’s hope this is a sign of things to come from the new album.
