Tim’s Essential Tracks of 2013

So that was 2013 huh? Pretty solid year. I’ve been working on this list all year. Full disclosure, if you’re looking for the obvious “Best of 2013″ list, this is not for you. This is more about the tracks that might have slipped through the cracks, the tracks that never quite got the attention they deserved. Some of them are more obvious than others (read: Daft Punk). While others, need to be heard (read: Streets of Laredo).

How do you boil down a year to 15 songs? In my case, you don’t. You make a soundcloud best of and a Spotify Best of list. We had a banner year personally, professionally and musically. A lot of firsts that I am extremely thankful for. Rather than sit here and wax poetic on what was definitely the best year of my life, why don’t you just sit back and listen to these tunes that helped make 2013 so special?

The Swiss – Kiss To Kiss (Pyramid Remix)

I’ve been feeling this winter pretty hard lately. A bit restless and a bit directionless as the days get shorter. We’ve had some serious fun over the past year and it seems for a brief moment, things slowed down. I didn’t like it at all. But it gave me a chance to take in some perspective of how far we’ve come. It’s pretty damn cool. Cue The Swiss and this insane Pyramid remix. Things are cruising along quite nicely until the 2:28 mark of this track and it just flips everything upside down. And then again at the 2:50 mark it brings it up another level. And I’m channelling Daft Punk and I feel like I’m in high school. The world is my oyster and I don’t care who knows it. Thanks guys, you just melted my face.

Daft Punk has remixed their own track ‘Get Lucky’ and really, they are the only ones that should remix their work. They remixed it into a 10 minute plus rerub and we can’t wait to hear what they do with it. If nothing else, they know how to build up anticipation for a release. That’s for sure. Love these promo videos.

The Hood Internet – Doin’ It Good (Kanye West x Daft Punk)

This feels a little cheap – but you know the quickest way to my heart is via Robots. And the only way you’re going to get me to talk about Kanye is if you throw some Robots along side. ‘Doing It Right’ just might be the best track off Random Access Memories. I hate ‘The Good Life’ – but this kind of works. I kind of can’t stop listening to it. I AM NOT AN ADVOCATE FOR DAFT PUNK MASHUPS. But this works and I love the Hood Internet.

Side note: Random Access Memories came out for real today. Go cop it.

Giorgio Moroder – Racer (2013)

Giorgio Moroder is twisting the knife a bit here coming off his interview slash monologue slash cameo on the new Daft Punk – Random Access Memories album. I guess we should all tip the hat here to a guy, who for all intents and purposes, invented the genre. This is a great track…check it out. Wait, I almost forgot, his first ever DJ set is at Output on Monday night as part of the Red Bull Music Academy series….see you there.

Is Daft Punk Playing The House of Vans?

So one of our readers tipped us off to some very interesting details this afternoon: Pharrell is playing a free show tonight at the House of Vans in Brooklyn. Also, Pharrell happens to have been featured on the latest Daft Punk single, ‘Get Lucky’ which was released today. Now some people flew out to California to see them drop by Phoenix’s set only to be disappointed when they did not in fact play. But who knew? They’re down the street here in Brooklyn!

OK there is zero confirmation that they are playing the House of Vans. But it does have all the makings for an epic secret show. Adding further fuel to the fire is the fact that Pharrell was quoted in VIBE magazine recently talking about the show:

“The concert is going to be electric. I’m going to give the crowd something they’re never going to forget. There is this song that we just dropped, so you may see something extra special.” The show is free and sold out. If I were you, I’d just show up and demand entry. One thing I learned at Coachella: never wait in line.

THE WAIT IS OVER. And while we’ve been able to connect the dots and get the gist of this track from the various clips and videos released over the past couple months, it still feels damn good to say that there is new Daft Punk in this world. This is their first official release in 7 years. The whole album, Random Access Memories will be available in its entirety on May 21st. The world is right again. PS – In classic Daft Punk fashion they toy with us with the video. It looks like a picture until the 2:21 mark, when they start dancing for about 10 seconds. Then it goes right back to just a picture. Love these guys and their twisted sense of humor.

So The Hood Internet wins the Daft Punk Award. If you’re wondering what the Daft Punk award is, it’s an award I literally just made up 32 seconds ago. So about 3 weeks ago, Daft Punk aired a 15 second snippet of what people think could be new music from their HIGHLY anticipated album coming out this year. What ensued was a modern day goldrush for who could take that snippet, chop it, loop it and make some “new music”. Well, The Hood Internet takes the new Justin Timberlake and puts it together with the new Daft Punk and it’s actually quite awesome. Listen up.
