Disclosure second album, Caracal, came out back in September and now the duo are putting out remixes to celebrate the release of ‘Magnets’ as a proper single. One of these remixes comes from UK producer and electronic experimentalist Jon Hopkins. Hopkins’ version pulls apart the original, stripping and stretching it into a pulsating and sprawling 7-minute atmospheric journey. What’s even more impressive is that Hopkins utilizes the subtle arrangements buried in Disclosure’s version, distorts the bassline, and morphs Lorde’s vocals —almost to the point of being unrecognizable — to create the essential elements of his own version. If nothing else, the remix is a study in how far a song can be stretched and morphed to create something bolder and entirely new.

Full disclosure, I am a big Disclosure fan (yes yes, terrible pun intended). I was always a fan, but ever since I saw them at the Treasure Island Music Festival a few months ago I have really been feeling the grove. They played an awesome house-y, dance set that blew the imaginary roof off the festival.

Since they are touring around I didn’t think we were going to hear too many new things from them but it seems someone else has helped us out. A British producer, who goes by the handle Wookie, has dropped an excellent remix of Voices. He’s taken the typical Disclosure sound and changed it every so slightly. The beat drives a little more and the sound is fuller. It has a completely different feel. For anyone needing a serious dance track without a lot of gimmicks, this one’s for you. Once you start dancing to it you won’t be able to stop.

If you like that also check out his excellent track, The Hype, featuring Eliza Doolittle.

Right now I am in a rather introspective mood. I am not sure if it’s all the David Foster Wallace and Don DeLillo I’ve been reading, the rainy weather, the Marc Maron podcasts I’ve been listening to, or what… but point is, I’m in a mood and that mood is well-suited by this new song, “Safe With Me” by UK artist, Sam Smith. He featured prominently on Disclosure‘s track “Latch” and is now set to release his own EP later this summer. At times, Smith’s vocals push into serious R&B territory, which is a bit much for me. But, overall, the thundering bass (like at 1:07), James Blake similarities, subtle piano-work, skittering beat, and expert layering from Two Inch Punch have me hooked. Give it a spin below.

I am addicted to Disclosure, I admit it (first step), but with this absolutely incredible remix by Flume I am skipping the other 11 steps of the program and letting my addiction flourish. This is genius, guys. I don’t know what sort of magic Flume possesses but it’s some powerful shit. He’s got a whole electronic orchestra packed into this track. This is all I’m gonna be listening to for the next few days, so… good thing Tim’s back.
