BISHØP to D8?

Welp, there is little to no mention of the past, present or future of new singer/songwriter/producer/ DJ, BISHØP, and her new track “F.F.Y. (Feeling For You).” The only information I can glean is from her Twitter page, which lists “Portlandia” as her location (assuming Oregon, unless she’s from the fictional Fred Armison city), so it’s safe to assume that (1) she’s upbeat and nice, but doesn’t realize it, (2) has a way too close relationship with her pet, (3) is super pretentious and snobby when it comes to coffee, protests, and recycling, and (4) probably rolls around town on a penny farthing, or some other stupid-style bike. Although this BISHØP (pronounced “bishop”) is not necessarily famous just yet, we will look at some (in)famous bishops from the past. Who knows, maybe we’ll learn a thing or two. During the middle ages (5th to 15th century), being a Bishop was good business. Essentially, as a Bishop, you’d threaten an ignorant person with eternal burning, and he’ll give you some money to feel safe again via “indulgences.” Martin Luther (remember him? the white one?) is remembered because of this very thing. In 1517 Luther wrote to his Bishop protesting the sale of indulgences, including a copy of what later became know as the Ninety-five Theses, originally titled Disputation of Martin Luther on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences. The story told in Sunday school was that he nailed the Ninety-five Theses on the door of a church and then it spread like wildfire (this has been mostly disproved), same dude though. Anywho, those Bishops were corrupt dudes, and there’s a solid chance all Christians would be Catholic were it not for Señor Luther and the subsequent Protestant Reformation. More bad dude Bishops are the inquisitors that denied Joan or Arc the right to counsel and went ahead with a trial they had no evidence to support, then burned her at the stake for heresy. Then there’s the humanoid cyborg Bishop, from the Ridley Scott series of “Alien” movies with Sigourney Weaver, whom we were never quite sure whose side he was on (probly also bad), and who had that sweet finger-stabbing-knife-trick (that everyone stabbed themselves trying to replicate). Last but maybe least we’ve got the mostly sacrificial chess piece, the bishop. Well, maybe it’s only sacrificial to me because I’m not good at chess and he’s constantly getting sacrificed.

If this BISHØP can learn a little from all those bishops, then she’ll probably see the black-souled underbelly of the music biz, extort her way to success, change her name, and sacrifice some pathetic sap in her stead, just like the rest of them.

Do you have the post-holiday blues? The “no-longer long weekend” shakes? The “why is everyone emailing me? don’t they realize yesterday was a holiday!? I’m not a machine goddammit!” Well this Canadian mystery man, Jeff Hartford, aka ATTLAS, will help cool you down with his new lyric-less jam. The Canuck got stuck in in the Mau5trap (DeadMau5’s label), and for a while had people thinking he actually was Mr. Mau5 himself, releasing tunes under a shadow moniker, but alas, he’s a real person. If you need another reason to like Jeff, Jeff is really in to Taylor Swift and inspired by movie soundtracks. His super chill Star Wars themed song, “Sunset Over Manaan” throws in some Han Solo dialogue here and there, and today’s jam, his new single out last week, “Ryat,” is also pretty nice and easy going to get you through whatever scaries you may be experiencing. Kiiara & Jai Wolf mastering USA foreign relations

Born and bred Fightin’ Illini, 21 year-old Kiiara appeared outta nowhere last summer on SoundCloud with her single “Gold,” a chopped up electrochill track that raced to north of 51 million spotify listens as of today. She was just making music in her bedroom at mom’s house, something happened, got hooked up with some mega folks and now she’s a hit. Easy peasy. Her official first EP came out like a week ago, but the jam to get on is this Jai Wolf remix of her track “Feels” – which gives you a very “move in slow motion Miami”-vibe (hit that 1:40 & 3:33 mark). The Bangladesh-born, NYC-raised DJ better known as Jai Wolf, not only has a sweet stage name, but was really in to Crash Bandicoot (gr8 game) and Pokemon growing up, which makes him aok in my book (all about that Charizard).

Out with her first solo EP is the 22 year-old Aussie volcanist (I mean vocalist), Nicole Millar (you may recognize her voice from Peking Duk’s tripled platinum song “High”). I coulda sworn a volcanist was the same as a volcanologist… ends up it’s just a made up word (and I’m dumb) :-/ and an easy typo from “vocalist”. Although it’d be pretty cool if she was a trendy singer/volcanologist, right?! Especially cuz then her new single “Tremble” would have a sweet double meaning (a double entendre if you will, given it’s risque nature of course) and not just the whole linear sex/missing you motif. But what can you do… She’s fresh off opening for Troye Sivan and her tunes are prime for my Girl Electrochill playlist. With a new solo career Nicole is just gonna wing it, and ya know, see what happens.

Transviolet – Bloodstream

So these duders debuted this summer with a smasher “Girls Your Age” (although “smasher” probably isn’t the right word to describe its electro-minimalism) and have racked up tons of listens. Before they hit the web with their first single, the LA-foursome actually sent out clear plastic cassette tapes with the words “Just Press Play” on them to tons of randos in LA (how’d they get their home addresses??), like some horror flick where you watch a movie and die in exactly one week – except this time you like, listen to some horrible cursed screeching barnyard torture music, then your ears fall off and you die exactly one song later. That’s basically the only possible outcome when you get a package like that, or maybe a musical ransom note… But honestly, who even has a cassette player anymore to find out their dad’s been kidnapped while smoking peyote in Silver Lake? Either way that song they sent out was awesome, and now their back at it again with their second single: Bloodstream. Oh ya, this is Transviolet.

Tove Styrke – Kiddo (LP)

Another Electropop Swede gettin’ after it in the USofA with a new album this month is Tove Styrke (it’s becoming a well known thing that Sweden makes the best pop). And if you were wondering, she is NOT the mispronounced euro daughter of Tony Stark and her raunchier Swede counterpart Tove Lo, but a whole other person of Swedish origins with a dope name. If I married her I would totally take her last name… “Felipe Styrke” but change it to “Stryke” to make more badass… so #hipster #brooklyn. Her new album Kiddo is pretty awesome, tackling feminism, sexism, and being whoever you wanna be, instead of who you “should be.”

Jaymes Young & Phoebe Ryan – We Won’t

West Coast man Jaymes Young teamed up with Phoebe Ryan for this slow burning break up track about how they “just can’t seem to get it right” that I’ve weirdly been listening to on repeat for the last week or so (especially now that it’s gloomy and rainy outside). Aren’t rainy summers the BEST? As he writes about his multitude of heartbreaks (a-la Taylor Swift but with less power angst and supermodel cameos) he created a Tumblr where he posts emails from fans about how they’ve connected with his music and helped cope and stuff. So if you’re feeling particularly forlorn and/or devastated by that guy/gal crushing all ur hopes and dreams of a perfect Montauk Summer together even though you only met twice before he made out with your roommate, shoot him an email…. You may get internet famous.

Fickle Friends – Velvet (EP)

NEW TUNES ALERT: from one of my favorite new bands, Brighton, UK new-wave dream-poppers, Fickle Friends – out this week with a new 4 track EP – “Velvet.” This stuff is dope on a rope, and if you know me, you know how much I love things on ropes: stuff like soap, candy, tire swings… Regardless, Fickle Friends are sweet (like that rope candy when you bite off both ends of a twizzler and use it as a straw at the movie theater??) and keeping true to their new sound, these new jams are real tasty. Yet to play a US show, but I will be sure to keep y’all posted. They’ve already said it’s in the works…

Elohim – She Talks Too Much

LA-synthpop newbie Elohim is out with her first single “She Talks Too Much” (which means “God” in Hebrew – but you already knew that. Cuz ur smart. I mean, you read my posts, don’t you? Don’t you!?) I for one love reading myself talk, but that’s why I have a music blog, so it’s totally allowed, and therefore not “too” anything. But everyone else who talks too much, especially in person = super annoying. Elohim just pumped this track out to the interwebs and it seems people are snatching at it with the same enthusiasm and vigor of a millennial having their first Hamptons summer weekend by blowing an entire paycheck impressing some chick at Surf Lodge only for her to go home with that older guy in her share house who’s like, “still doing this,” bc, like, FOMO-YOLO, or whatever.

Summer is upon us. Rejoice! Then start sweating on the subway platform

Olivver the Kid – Not Going Home & Freak

Olivver the Kid formed when the drummer from LA quintet the Neighbourhood, Bryan “Olivver” Sammis, quit the band and went solo. His EP “Freak” came out in October and it’s got some really interesting and unique sounding jams worth checking out (plus it’s only 5 songs… let’s be honset, you’ve got the time). If there was a mash up of them all to send out that’d be better :-/. Fun facts: he’s really bad at Halloween costumes and claims to have 17 tattoos… but he counts a full sleeve as just one. Not really sure that’s how it works.
