I’ve been listening to this song for a few weeks now, quietly admiring their sweet band name, which for the life of me I thought was “Don Bronco,” not Don Broco. Only upon looking them up for the purposes of this email did I realize my dyslexic error. “Broco” doesn’t make much sense unless you read up on how they named their band (I did, and it’s still not great), while “Bronco” is really a much cooler name. Not only does it immediately invoke images of OJ Simpson speeding down the highway in his white Bronco (Ford is bringing the Bronco back and it’s really awesome if you haven’t checked it out), but there was a cool Australian boxer way back when named Don “Bronco” Johnson. What a name. He was not only a wild swinging fighter who drew big crowds, but also famous for his rodeo riding and his Errol Flynn style mustache (which is regarded as one of the manliest mustaches of all time). More than that, Don Bronco was also ahead of his time through his breaking down of social norms; he was married twice, both to Aboriginal women, not a common occurrence for a white guy in 1950s Australia. Anywho, this Bedford, England band shuffled between several names in their early days, one of which was Don Loco (not bad, sounds like 4Loko). After their guitarist “broke” his wrist playing soccer, they jokingly called themselves Don Broco… See? Not as good as Don Bronco, even if they do seem to be using the whole “bronco” cowboy theme in their video, but what can you do.

As I’m procrastinating on packing for a trip to Zion and Bryce Canyon where there’s a possibility of snow in the very near future, I’m reminded of how much I miss summer. It was only 2 weekends ago that I was eating brunch outside in the blazing sun and attempting not to sweat into my food (an impossible task in humid DC weather). It’s difficult letting go of summer, but these songs are so damn catchy that they’ll ease your transition into fall weather and pumpkin spice latte basic-ness. Get ready to soak up these songs and let them transport you back to summer bliss.

Jarrow-“$$Spoilers$$”

Jarrow is the solo project of 20 year old Melbourne musician Dan Oke. “$$Spoilers$$” is a shining example of bright, indie garage rock. This sunny track that showcases the most spunk and personality can be found on his recently released debut album, 2003 Dream. The accompanying video to this single is also something to behold.

I couldn’t glean much from the interwebs on Dutch indie-electronic duo Bungalow. However, I do know that their debut ep, 90/92 is pure listening magic. Though the ep only contains four songs, “Fox” is the song that grabbed my attention immediately…which maybe isn’t completely fair because it IS the first song. Regardless, it’s the catchiest song with the greatest promise of shimmy shaking. The ep as a whole is a blend of killer vocals, tremendous synths, and smooth production. Give the four tracks a spin and see if you’re not craving more before the last song is over.

THIS SONG. THE SYNTHS. OMG. As soon as I heard the first few seconds of this song, I was snapped out of a work daze like I had just taken a midday caffeine break for my senses. Francis and the Lights lead singer Francis Starlite nails the mix of echo-y auto-tuned vocals layered over powerful, driving synths. The result is this bang up tune that could get even the most reluctant of listeners to hit repeat. “See Her Out” is the opening track on their latest album Farewell, Starlite! Start with this song, stay for the rest of the album.

On the heels of his first three singles, “Boy”, “Need Your Love”, and “Vices” comes “Daylight” from the mysterious LA via New Zealand artist known as BOYBOY. While these are the only four songs on his Spotify and SoundCloud pages, he’s built strong momentum with the release of each song. “Daylight” is the most captivating, with a fetching hook and stimulating beat. I don’t know if it’s his anonymity, or the fact that his songs are all so addicting, but I feel very enthusiastic about him as an artist and am super eager for him to release new music.

As is the case with many folks, my 9-5 consists of sitting at a desk typing away on a computer day after day. Most of the time the only thing that helps me get through a long day is listening to music. I’m sure most of you can attest to the power that music has to pump you up during that mid-afternoon slump, chill you out after a particularly grueling assignment, or get you ready to tackle a stack of paperwork that, if it were to fall over, would bury you at your desk for weeks.

It was exactly one week ago today while I was listening to the #NewMusicFriday playlist, that one song in particular came on, and I literally had to stop what I was doing to click over to Spotify. The song that caught my attention was “drugs” by EDEN. I immediately started doing research on the artist–Who is this person? What other songs are available? Is the artist going on tour anytime soon or did I completely miss the boat?

Thankfully, I managed to glean some information from the Google machine regarding the person responsible for creating the latest song for which I cannot stop hitting repeat. EDEN is the moniker under which Jonathon Ng releases music for your listening pleasure. This 20 year old Irish multi-instrumentalist has previously released tracks as The Eden Project. He has his own label, MCMXCV, through which he released his most recent EP, “End Credits” in 2015.

What struck me initially about the song “drugs” was the line: “Cause I’m a fucking mess sometimes” which is (naturally) delivered right before the drop. I’m not sure if the lyric resonated with me so much because the first time I heard the song I may have been going through a brief period of self-loathing… or maybe because it’s a universal feeling many of us may have experienced before? After listening to the song on repeat solely because I liked how it sounded, I decided to delve into the lyrics. The song seems to revolve around the comparison of relationships to drugs because, “Hey! Sometimes I just can’t quit you regardless of the gigantic mess you’re making of my life” amirite?

Relating love to a drug is definitely nothing new. However, EDEN is able to spin the woes of relationships into a piece of music that showcases lyrics sung with a great deal of emotion layered on top of well crafted electronic beats. The song is a little dark, a bit moody, but definitely a dance-y piece you should be listening to on repeat. The song has a completely unique feel, which makes it a true indie-electronic gem.

EDEN’s newest EP is scheduled to be released on August 19th. You can pre-order “I Think You Think Too Much of Me” here.

If you live in North America, he’ll be embarking on a tour beginning on Sept 7th. Find the full tour schedule+tix here.

Listen to “drugs” below, and make sure you keep EDEN on your radar.

SHAED is a DC based electronic trio comprised of lead singer Chelsea Lee and twin brothers Max and Spencer Ernst. Formerly known as The Walking Sticks, SHAED has amped up the synths this time around, which serve as the perfect backdrop to showcase Lee’s strong and sultry vocals. With a new name also comes a new, elevated sound. The trio has traded in a more indie-pop aesthetic for one that runs a synthy + R&B course. Don’t be surprised if one of their songs gets a club remix, and then ends up in heavy rotation on your favorite spin instructor’s dance/club/R&B playlist.

The band has three singles currently on SoundCloud; “Just Wanna See,” “The News,” and “Thunder,” the latter of which is a song in support of Bernie Sanders.

Let’s get this straight, a musician who [claims] the fruit of their labor embodies the essence of distilled rainwater in its purest form.

I present to you, Moon Walkers for some 2016 charmé[d] (tenses: ing, s, ed) listening. The name comes from what I can envision would be the perfect (not to everyone) playlist for my first walk on the moon.
– Throwing it back to Beautiful Girls has sparked my fantasy of quitting my job, moving to Australia, and becoming a surf instructor. 2016 goals? Anyone with me?

– You like eclectic, eh? You’ll like this; listen and think.

After getting unduly rejected from the cast of True Blood (and Vampire Diaries, but to be clear, beating Ian Somerhalder for the role of Damon Salvatore was never realistic :-/), the Dutchman Nick Rotteveel transformed his hopes and dreams of being a TV vampire and became Nicky Romero, DJ/Producer/Hit Maker, and most importantly, was featured on the killer site FeliSaysListen back in 2014 (#shamelessplug). He in turn is also the founder and owner of Protocol Recordings, featuring EDM artists and helping DJs release tracks under Romero’s tutelage – he’s even got Taylor Swift’s newest plaything, Calvin Harris, on his label. Nicky also made his film debut in Zac Efron’s amazingly accurate portrayal of DJ life in LA, We Are Your Friends… For his newest single, here, Nicky Romero teamed up with 63 year-old Nile Rodgers, one of the leaders of the disco era, and made this sweet video.

I remember the precise moment I sold my soul to the music devil; South by Southwest, ATX. The very own Most Definitely’s Stoli infused afternoon at The Yard. Before that my unexposed dreams twinkled in classical piano, A Capella’d harmonies, and celestial music festivals. Needless to say, this year had me hooked. My fellow writers and cousins have inspired my search for musical talent. Oh, and I finally got that electric guitar, oww. I bid you adieu Beelzebub’s year. A brief confessional precedes my list; in the words of our most mystical Calypso, “My intentions are honest ones, and my heart is not made of iron…”

Maybe I should blame my fiery zodiac, or just admit… Sharing this list exposes the soundtrack of my year thus far, a personal and utterly biased list. I can’t speak for you, but, if you take a gander you might just find yourself learning moves you’d never dreamed feasible (or flexible enough for). Two quick confessions and then we’ll commence musically, I promise. As a small town high school English teacher, the music industry is comparable to Dante’s second ring of hell, a daunting fiery pit of passion, authenticity, and soul; a niche I am gingerly stepping into through wonderful role models and musical talents. Finally, my draw to the music is through my synesthesthetic (new word?) viewpoint. I see the notes morph through spools of color across my lids, they roll, bubble, pour, through my veins. It’s a direct reaction to the art and dedication of the artists. Alas, enjoy. Make space to dance, lay, and free your body from our daily mundanities.

Here’s a Soundcloud version of the playlist, with a few added bonuses not found on Spotify:

The recently released EP by the breathtaking, Philadelphia-based Marion Hill, brings a new edge to her sweet debut circa 2013. This sultry siren appeals to a wide audience by integrating elements of Moulin Rouge burlesque and soulful vocals over ambient electronics and jazz forte. Her risk-taking and command of musical identity speaks honestly, her confidence articulates a message of complete and utter dominance. Hill puts vixen to tune in her new single “Got It.” Not to mention, her talented featured artist Steve Davit infuses her work with timeless bravado.

Check out her new album Sway; also, she’s touring, you ought-a check her out.

Nimino is on the brink of a tumultuous adventure of sleepless nights and symbiotic artistry survival. Nimino transitions the crux of a night into dreamlike dawn with his smooth decrescendos and soulful influences. An emerging artist from Brighton, UK, Milo Evans transfixes crowds with his fluctuating rhythm ensuring a fluid denouement of the night’s antics. Milo’s youth is riddled with the heavy influence of the dubstep scene in Brighton; a mecca where dubstep fans could transcend the barriers of life through a jolt of music and a slap of salt air. He takes a softer approach to the electronic hub that had emerged, creating soft ambient tunes to sooth the soul’s transition before emerging into the salty sunshine.

I am always struck by an artist with a calling. Passion is a devil that strikes inopportunely, yet a calling shines through the face of aversion, failure, and perseverance. Milo has graced the stage since 14, his artistry will remember his innovation in the face of a jarred musical scene, introducing soothing ambients to a future of listeners.
