It’s been an interesting year for the world at large, as well as for me personally. We had a World Cup, an Ebola outbreak, The Fappening, Ferguson, the Sony Hack and an Ice Bucket Challenge. Robin Williams, Maya Angelou and Philip Seymour Hoffman are no longer with us.

I watched a little girl become conscious of her surroundings and turn from a crying baby into an interactive little person. It’s was definitely a little more introspective and thought provoking for me and the songs here seem to reflect that. This list is more downbeat than last year but, if anything, they are more intense and emotional, creating a groove all their own. I hope you enjoy and have a wonderful New Years!

Wolf Saga ft. LYON – Team (Lorde Cover) + More Lorde Remixes!

OK, I get it, people really like Royals. Its a good song and all, but frankly I’m pretty tired of it and Team and Tennis Court, etc. Judging from the Grammy’s, Lorde and her unique style of zombie dancing (which consequently made me like her a little more) are not going anywhere. So, if everyone wants to hear a little Lorde, here are a two tracks that will meet that need while changing it up a little bit.

The first one comes to us from Wolf Saga, who has done a number of nice covers (Daft Punk, Peter, Bjorn and John). He is joined here by LYON for this cover of Team. Johnny admits “I couldn’t do Lorde justice with my vocals if I wanted to, but LYON killed it.” I wholeheartedly agree.

In the Sleepless Club, WEKEED do a nice mashup of Lorde’s The Love Club and Flume‘s Sleepless. It has a kind of smooth feel that really gives this track a subtly different flavor that either of the originals.

Tell us about any other riffs on Lorde songs that you know of because if I need them desperately to placate the Lorde-ites while retaining my sanity.

I am addicted to Disclosure, I admit it (first step), but with this absolutely incredible remix by Flume I am skipping the other 11 steps of the program and letting my addiction flourish. This is genius, guys. I don’t know what sort of magic Flume possesses but it’s some powerful shit. He’s got a whole electronic orchestra packed into this track. This is all I’m gonna be listening to for the next few days, so… good thing Tim’s back.

Hayden James – Permission To Love

Future Classic has been quite active in the last six months with solid releases from Flume, Classixx*, Panama, and Jagwar Ma. Now enters another Aussie to the mix, Hayden James, whose Permission To Love EP drops today featuring the title song, “Permission To Love,” and two remixes. In light of Random Access Memories just coming out, the funky guitar work and dance grooves apparent on the track seem easily comparable to Daft Punk’s latest work. But regardless of this probably unfair comparison, James’ effortlessly smooth debut has me hooked and is certainly worth a listen.
