When I first saw this dude’s name, I thought he named himself after that amazing Zac Efron movie where he chats and plays baseball in the woods with his dead brother while sailing or whatever, but then, after looking it up, saw that was Charlie St. Cloud, not St. Clair (womp womp). Ends up Earl St. Clair, the Cleveland native, named himself “St. Clair” since his first studio in Cleveland and his second studio, upon movie to California, were both on St. Clair street! What a coinkidink! I mean, he HAD to name himself Earl St. Clair, although Earl St. Cloud woulda be tight too. When Zac couldn’t decide between his real life gf and his ghost-bro?? Heavy stuff; life is for living, amirite..? Growing up with non-ghost people in Alabama had its influences on Mr. Earl, and his fresh New Orleans-feelin, swag-steppin happy jam is great for a day like today. Def Jam describes him as an “earthy, full-bodied shouldering blend of Outkast, James Brown, and Ray Charles” (good company I’d say). His debut album “Songs About a Girl I Used to Know” is coming out shortly, and this tasty lick is right off of it. Another track worth checking is “Man On Fire,” more of a burner, then the happy dance of “Feeling Alive.” Oh ya, he and Lebron share an agent. That’s kinda cool. Cleveland’s second son.

South Africa, for anyone that’s been, is known for its exclusive production of Mercedes Benz C Class right-hand drive cars, lion burgers, the filming of District 9, the largest diamond ever – therein stole by the British, the highest bungee jump location in the world (710 feet), its collection of over 2000 shipwrecks off its coast, its hilarious laws (i) it’s illegal to sit closer that 2 meters to someone of the opposite sex if he or she is wearing only a bathing suit (ii) bear wrestling is illegal (damn!), and of course it’s burgeoning indie pop scene. Well that’s really it I think. I mean, I’ve never been, I just kinda know stuff. This Cape Town quartet (sometimes a fifth joins), Al Bairre (pronounced Al Bear), are an aggressively unfancy band with a sweet new EP out 2 weeks ago. They’ve still yet to put out a full album but are on the radar for 2016. They’re made up of twin gals, one dude who’s kissed both, then some other dude who tagged along once those three made a band. Oh, and they love tie-dye which is kinda bleh I guess… Oh ya, Disney’s Animal Kingdom exclusively serves South African wine. Neat, right?

Now that summer’s officially over, besides ya’know, the 90+ degree heat, violent panhandlers, and perpetual subway sweat, we can pay homage to all the Shady Girls of Summer. To the gals who insist on only meeting up “out east” – umm, why would I do that? That’s SO far away… we live like, two blocks away from each other. To the gals makin’ plans and not bothering to let you know they ain’t showin’ – “hi.. umm, i’m here… where r u? – oh ur sick… again?! You should really see someone about that.” To the gals with boyfriends who don’t mind you knowing you’re the side piece… well it seems CRUISR, the chilled-out indiepop crew outta Philly are tired of all the bologna, and are letting you know with their new EP, “Throw Shade” (the other half of the EP was blogged out courtesy of Max).

Scott Helman – Tikka

19 year-old Canuck, Scott Helman, was signed by Warner at 15 (not too shabby, pretty sure at 15 I had braces and was still spiking my hair up, not signing record deals or doing anything creative whatsoever besides doodling dicks on my math books) and went full-on music once graduating from high school. Now he’s got an album and I have a blog… ugh. It’s definitely “pop”, but like, sounds better than plain ole pop – especially on tracks like Tikka throwing in serious retro/indie flare. You can tell by tracks like these that his main influences are Bob Dylan, Neil Young, maybe even some Paul Simon (a la Graceland) for that matter. Either way, it’s nice to listen to happy music during the summer. So ya. That’s basically my only reason for choosing this. Ok bye bye now.

Sigala – Easy Love

Some London bloke named Sigala (real name Bruce Fielder) made this song remixing Jackson 5’s “ABC” in to a real happy catchy tune. The currently solo artiste is releasing in the UK in September with the Ministry of Sound, which everyone knows is the best of all the ministries at Hogwarts, and kind of a big deal :-/. And since you obvi love all the Step Up movies… I mean, were you not entertained? Well then you’ll love this video. It’s REAL happy with lots of cool little LA kids having sweet dance battles (Great for a Friday). Eat your heart out Channing.

The Shadowboxers – Ride Home

Not a new band or anything, but these ATLiens (although they have since moved to Nashville) – The Shadowboxers – provide light, dancy, fun, and bouncy soul-funk tunes for your summer playlists. So there’s a win I just tossed ya right out the bat. These boys went to Emory, the school only people from Emory like to call the Harvard of the South… and have been blending their love for D’Angelo ever since. Regardless, these Allen Stone wannabes (which is high praise btw) are mixin’ soul, pop, indie rock, and some R&B tossed in for good measure and it’s quite nice if I must say so myself (which I am, bc I’m literally typing it right now).

The Notionaries – Excited Eyes

Hailing mostly from Tornado Alley (not a good start), The Notionaries sing happy songs while bringin’ to mind a similar sounding British youngin’, Saint Raymond (ok, getting better) and his jams “Brighter Days” & “Wildheart” (remember the Notti-teens and the daggering? No? You should re-read it, but whatever, fine; you won’t). The Midwest-born (OKC/Wichita/Denver) quartet formed up early last year and just pumped out an EP (solid album art too). The lads are a high-spirited bunch, living for today, and figuring it out as they go along without any worries #artistslife #imsurprisedtheydontliveinbrooklynyet #nowayOKCcankeepthem #DuranttoNYC

Afrojack – SummerThing!

I thought most DJ’s got in to it to compensate for something, or because like, they couldn’t get in to clubs on their own, but Afrojack is 1) Dutch, and everyone knows clubs love Euros with deep V’s; 2) dated Paris Hilton, which helps with the whole club thing fo sho; and 3) is 6’10″… so he’s clearly not compensating. Nick Van de Wall has all sorts interesting tid bits about him that are #classic artist, like a daughter from a Dutch model named Vegas. This happy summer track features Mike Taylor, a Philly-man, a singer/songwriter born to a jazz musician father. So I guess we can thank him for the sweet vocals. Feel free to play this at your local pool party, bbq, tiki torched rooftop, or just alone dancing in your kitchen while making quinoa.
