It’s been an interesting year for the world at large, as well as for me personally. We had a World Cup, an Ebola outbreak, The Fappening, Ferguson, the Sony Hack and an Ice Bucket Challenge. Robin Williams, Maya Angelou and Philip Seymour Hoffman are no longer with us.

I watched a little girl become conscious of her surroundings and turn from a crying baby into an interactive little person. It’s was definitely a little more introspective and thought provoking for me and the songs here seem to reflect that. This list is more downbeat than last year but, if anything, they are more intense and emotional, creating a groove all their own. I hope you enjoy and have a wonderful New Years!

Unfortunately, Cape Lion isn’t available on Spotify so we’re one song short on this version.

2013 was a year of nostalgia, for me personally and also in the music that accompanied me throughout, more so than any year I can remember. This year was also my first here at the Most Definitely, which I can’t thank Max and Tim enough for. In putting together my hour-long 2013 year-end playlist, I really tried to focus on this retro-yet-new and exciting feel that embodied the past year. From the ’70s sound of the Preatures; ’80s of Oliver, Holy Ghost! and Wild Nothing; to the ’90s of Cut Copy and Jagwar Ma, it is all there — refreshingly nostalgic, yet freshly new.

Hopefully, this playlist captures the crazy ride that was 2013 and joins the ranks of Tim’s, Max’s, and Jason’s. Give it a listen below and here’s to what 2014 has to offer!

I’m not sure what kind of mood has precipitated my double post today but I am sure that I am feeling incredibly calm. My wife may have roofied my drink to get me into this place but while I’m here let me tell you about these two songs. Both are downbeat jams that would not be out of place on your special bath time mix.

The first tunes comes from Hayden James, who dropped his appropriately titled EP, Hayden James. I knew this was going to be good when I saw it was from the Future Classic label so I was very excited to listen. James does not disappoint. The song, Embrace, swirls the word embrace around us with a nice mix of synth creating very unique sound.

The second track comes from fthrsn (pronounced father son), a one man band out of Michigan. The man behind the music is Macklin Underdown (who needs a stage name, not this guy!!). I’m really digging his smooth sound which on this track, Middle School Dance, combine a lot of synth-y and R&B elements. Delicious.

Listen and let us which one you like better, or if you’re like me, just enjoy both.

Future Classic has been quite active in the last six months with solid releases from Flume, Classixx*, Panama, and Jagwar Ma. Now enters another Aussie to the mix, Hayden James, whose Permission To Love EP drops today featuring the title song, “Permission To Love,” and two remixes. In light of Random Access Memories just coming out, the funky guitar work and dance grooves apparent on the track seem easily comparable to Daft Punk’s latest work. But regardless of this probably unfair comparison, James’ effortlessly smooth debut has me hooked and is certainly worth a listen.

* Not Australian
