Since today is the 3rd day before the weekend, and no one wants to work when they know they will be shootin’ off roman candles and hittin’ the slip’n’slide, now mindlessly staring at a monitor in perpetuity, we need happy and mindless tunes. And as for our friends in the UK, they need happy and mindless tunes to take their minds off of… well, where do we start..? Seems they got a jump on being mindless a when they mindlessly voted themselves out of the EU and made us all regret having invested in the stock market. So, thanks for that. They mindlessly played themselves right out of the Euro soccer tournament to lil’ ole Iceland. And now they are turning their minds off in hopes that all of this is a dream and that we Yankees join them in their horrible decision making come November so they can return to pointing their finger and laughing at our incredulity. So to remind our British buddies they’ll never have another colony (and will most likely lose Northern Ireland and Scotland in the coming year), is the four-piece rock band from Tennessee, Colony House. Named after the apartment complex that somehow all members of the band have lived in at some point in their lives. The Chapman brothers, who founded the band, are the sons of the quite famous Christian music singer, Steven Curtis Chapman (20 studio albums, 2 certified platinum, 7 gold, and 48 #1 hits on Christian radio, along with a bajillion awards). Haven’t heard of him? Ya, me neither.

Speaking of Tennessee, if you didn’t know the Volunteer State had some hilarious laws, here’s some examples of what we pay our lawmakers to do: (my fave) the only animal it’s legal to shoot out of your car window is a whale; in Oneida, it’s technically illegal for a woman to call a man and ask him on a date (not like they would anyways); it is legal to gather and consume roadkill (finally); hollow logs may not be sold (huh?); it’s illegal to share your Netflix password (my sister would be furious); and carrying a skunk across state lines is also illegal (keep yours on a leash instead). OH ya, interracial marriage is still illegal (although not enforced). Contact your congressperson.

Feli Says Tennessee is weird.

Some folks are labeling the Montclair, NJ (mostly) 8-piece band, Pinegrove, as alt-country. I don’t think that’s terribly fair, but then again, labeling things is hard to do well. We as Americans love to label (#LTL). It’s one of our favorite past times. Dr. Remen at UCSF states that “labeling sets up an expectation of life that is often so compelling we can no longer see things as they really are“ and “a label is an attempt to assert control and manage uncertainty.” Hmmm… so we label things to exert control, and so we don’t have to “think” anymore. Verrrrry interesting Doctor. Very interesting indeed. So if I told you that Pinegrove’s great debut LP is alt-country, you’d probably go in to with some sort of expected parameters that would be different that if I told you it was midwestern-indie-emo, or folksy, or introspective art-rock. Maybe we should just stop labeling people/music/religions and let people experience things for themselves and make up their own minds (but then how will I #hashtag!? ugh…). Most things in life are more complex than one or two labels. Then again, these links of amazing label faux pas makes them fun again (here & here). Back to Pinegrove, their new album is really good and really chill. It’s good for work, for home, for walking. But that’s just my opinion. Think what you like.

“[Labeling] may allow us the security and comfort of a mental closure and encourage us not to think about things again. But life is known only by those who have found a way to be comfortable with change and the unknown. Given the nature of life, there may be no security, but only adventure.” #labels #amirite? #pleaseagree

I present to you, Moon Walkers for some 2016 charmé[d] (tenses: ing, s, ed) listening. The name comes from what I can envision would be the perfect (not to everyone) playlist for my first walk on the moon. Don’t make me wait too long, Branson.

2016 just keeps throwing curve balls our way, so why not take ourselves out of the present, and think for a moment. Thank you and R.I.P. Don Addis for our adapted image.

Playlist Skim:

– Highlighted artist: Raleigh Ritchie a.k.a. hip, hip, hurrah – Jacob Anderson! I am thoroughly enjoying the hype of his sound.

– Watching Miike Snow’s come back has been lush! He’s on tour currently, ahem.

– Throwing it back to Beautiful Girls has sparked my fantasy of quitting my job, moving to Australia, and becoming a surf instructor. 2016 goals? Anyone with me?

My mother always said “nothing good happens after midnight” as a way to keep me home on the weekends playing gin rummy and watching TGIF instead out clubbing like a regular 17 year old. Thankfully for all current teens out there, Bear Hands has amended this idiom to 2 AM with their new song – you guessed it – “2AM.” Now you can play gin AND get to the club when they open doors at 12! Too late for me though, since I’m now addicted to Baccarat (thanks mom) and too old for clubs… The Brooklyn based non-barbershop quartet originally formed up at Wesleyan, self-produced their first album “Distraction,” bounced around between a few labels, and settled on doing it all themselves, launching their own label called Spensive Sounds, on which they’ll release their new album “You’ll Pay For This” in April.

You can’t believe everything Feli Says. True Story.

Hailing from Exeter, not the prep school Phillips Exeter, but the Cathedral city in southwest England best known for being a wool trade hub in the late 19th century and then destroyed in WW2, Shit Present (ya… they actually named their band “Shit Present”) rival the six piece Nashville rock outfit Diarrhea Planet for worst poop-featured band name… Despite their crappy names, both bands rock out quite efficiently. Shit Present is a hodge podge of people actively full-time in other bands who figured they weren’t busy enough to take on another project. Their self-titled EP came out a few months ago and has a pretty chill indie-grunge-lofi feel to it, if you’re in to that sorta thing. Still can’t believe they named their band Shit Present, but the internet seems to love it. I mean, it’s definitely…. memorable…? Here’s two different sounding songs: one loud, one soft. Oh ya, they’ve got a sweet music video for “Kick Me” featuring a really cute little girl angsting around town. Definitely worth checking out.

Merseyside indie rockers (that’s Liverpool btw – home of legendary LFC), The Wombats, are on the rebound. After a triumphant platinum release, a crazy touring schedule, and unexpected success, they fell in to dark times loaded with vehicular accidents casting gloomy shadows and disrupting their chakra. After lots of hot yoga (true story – drummer Dan Haggis is a yogi), they’re back and groovin’ with their self-described Merseyside Mojo. Fun fact, Sir Paul McCartney offered to produce an album of theirs back in the day and if you throw your jumper to them onstage (sweater for those that don’t speak British), they will try their best to give it back, bc they’re a polite people. Give it a try* : April in NYC and May in LA.

Simon told me to tell you, ok? Feli Says Listen

Awww.. But that didn’t deter them! They pressed on. Never give up! Never surrender! They wont RITZ’s 2014 Band Slam series and have opened for all sorts of peeps like Capital Cities (who have praised their live show). They sound like a band that’d be dope live, too. They even have a TAMBOURINE. Who needs cowbell… Choke on that Bruce Dickinson.

Welsh indie rockers, Catfish and Bottlemen, sound like a band name made up on the set of Simon Pegg’s movie, “The World’s End” – if you haven’t seen it it’s funny as hell, and plus then that reference would make sense… ugh, whatever. Seems they took the name from some Australian bloke when they realized “The Prestige” was way too generic for a band as sweet as this one. First album came out in the US in January, “The Balcony” – check it out. Plus, sweet album art, obvi. And they’re playing March 9 at Bowery Ballroom in NYC.

Why won’t anyone listen to me… :-/ www.felisayslisten.com
