Why do we call it “Sunday Scaries”? I’ve heard folks use that term to describe the looming fear of the ever fast approaching Monday work day; which it then should be called the Monday Scaries… Right? Or am I missing something? You’re “scared” of Monday. Then again, I’ve also heard it described as the sort of Sunday hangover shakes from boozing all weekend and foggily recounting your last 36 hours of mistakes (where did these pro-Trump texts from someone named Frank come from/why is the Chinese food delivery guy asleep on my couch/why do my heels have no heels/this isn’t my shirt), while realizing you are indeed a tax paying adult with responsibilities and employees to manage in a few short hours. That sounds terrible. But I still don’t get the “scaries” part :-/. Either way, next time the Sunday scaries come a’creepin, you can find relief in The Sun Days – who are none of the above things – (and who may or may not have essentially copied another band’s name), providing breezy Cali-inspired beach indiepop by way of Sweden. They are happy, fun and all around super chill awesome. Stereogum called them “one of the best new bands in the world” back in their February review – bold, to say the least. They also mentioned that calling your band The Sun Days (with a space in between “Sun” and “Days”) is “a lot like adopting the name Churches or Limp Biscuit or Ray, Dio Head.” HA. Nice one. Their 2016 debut album, meticulously titled “Album,” is real real nice.

Back in January we discussed all the sweet stuff going down in Philly. Besides being a hot bed for meat sweats and subsequent stair running, Cold Fronts frontman, and only remaining original member, Craig Almquist is a role model for all Creed-esque youngsters looking to roll with the punches and take a shot at the title. Every since he started the band in 2010, he’s surrounded himself with a revolving door of “band members” (almost as bad as Taking Back Sunday). Basically rando Philly friends who want to play/tour/whatever… Through all the consistent inconsistency, Craig just shrugs and laughs: “on a positive note, this band technically can’t break up unless I quit.” And for anyone that thinks SXSW is a bunch of overhyped tech-hipster bologna (umm… me), Craig got his break while playing an impromptu show at SX, and just by chance, the legendary Sire Records founder, Seymour “Butts” Stein (dude who signed The Ramones and Talking Heads forever ago) walked by, liked what he heard, snagged a CD, and signed them the next year.

If can you recall my affinity for Notti-teens (no! not a porn genre on RedTube [jeez!], but the “dubious subsect of British youths known for their awkward white kid version of “daggering”?, Saint Raymond and Ady Suleiman?), well Saint Raymond finally came out with first full length album (and boy is it lengthy…. 17 tracks?? Who does this guy think he is??, a 90’s rapper like Juvenile or Three Six Mafia?). Getting through the whole thing takes forever but he’s got a real smooth sound. Maybe Major Lazer can do some stupid 30-second mega cut of the album so people can listen to all the songs in one sitting, then retire from music, throwaway his stupid mixing keyboard, get a vasectomy, move to Oregon with the crazy wildlife people, and never play a music festival again. Major Lazer’s the worst.

Everyone knows down deep that Major Lazer is the worst. At least that’s what Feli Says :-/

South Africa, for anyone that’s been, is known for its exclusive production of Mercedes Benz C Class right-hand drive cars, lion burgers, the filming of District 9, the largest diamond ever – therein stole by the British, the highest bungee jump location in the world (710 feet), its collection of over 2000 shipwrecks off its coast, its hilarious laws (i) it’s illegal to sit closer that 2 meters to someone of the opposite sex if he or she is wearing only a bathing suit (ii) bear wrestling is illegal (damn!), and of course it’s burgeoning indie pop scene. Well that’s really it I think. I mean, I’ve never been, I just kinda know stuff. This Cape Town quartet (sometimes a fifth joins), Al Bairre (pronounced Al Bear), are an aggressively unfancy band with a sweet new EP out 2 weeks ago. They’ve still yet to put out a full album but are on the radar for 2016. They’re made up of twin gals, one dude who’s kissed both, then some other dude who tagged along once those three made a band. Oh, and they love tie-dye which is kinda bleh I guess… Oh ya, Disney’s Animal Kingdom exclusively serves South African wine. Neat, right?

To the gals who insist on only meeting up “out east” – umm, why would I do that? That’s SO far away… we live like, two blocks away from each other.

Indiepopper and Tegan & Sara vocal double, Allison Weiss, created a Kickstarter in 2009 to press her debut full length, and after crushing her monetary goal, she became a sensation for online promotion (NYT, Wired, etc). Regarding her new album, out in October, she says she’s finally making music that sounds like the music she listens to… which I guess is a good thing..? :-/ But also kind of a bad thing, right? I mean, if it sounds like what you listen to, then you’re just mimicking instead of taking elements and making them wholly unique and your own. But can anything ever be wholly your own? Or has everything already been created and we’re just a combination of our experiences and influences? If so, then how can one take credit for anything they do? Can we look at anything in a void, and separate it from all other things to appreciate it for it’s singularity? But how can you not consider the past? Ugh… IDK, my heads spinning just thinking about “art” and what that even means… Either way, the Georgia native, now LA resident, has some nice catchy indie tunes. Bye.

19 year-old Canuck, Scott Helman, was signed by Warner at 15 (not too shabby, pretty sure at 15 I had braces and was still spiking my hair up, not signing record deals or doing anything creative whatsoever besides doodling dicks on my math books) and went full-on music once graduating from high school. Now he’s got an album and I have a blog… ugh. It’s definitely “pop”, but like, sounds better than plain ole pop – especially on tracks like Tikka throwing in serious retro/indie flare. You can tell by tracks like these that his main influences are Bob Dylan, Neil Young, maybe even some Paul Simon (a la Graceland) for that matter. Either way, it’s nice to listen to happy music during the summer. So ya. That’s basically my only reason for choosing this. Ok bye bye now.

We’re Smallpools goddammit and we can synth the hell outta whatever we want!” (I think* that’s how it went at least). Regardless, their new-and-debut album is fire. Actually, so much fire that they’re already playing with Walk the Moon, Two Door Cinema Club, and other on-their-way big timers (no, not THE Big Tymers – although that’d be super cool since Birdman is the freshest & knows how to hide his approx. 160 mil in his momma name), as well as remixing tracks with Magic Man.

PRIDES (sometimes PR/DES), a threesome of Glasgow synthpoppers (the most edgy popper-based musician subgenre), started kickin’ up dust in 2014 with sporadic track releases – all dope tracks, really. Making the move from punk to electropop (which tells a lot about why they’re so good) was a natural progression, and the self proclaiming pop-junky Paramore fans are planning on releasing a real album this year before summer, which would be siiiick yo, cuz we wouldn’t have to hold our breath for that long, son! So here’s two tracks to tickle your ear-taste-buds.

It’s been workin’ for Simon… :-/ feli says listen

Southwest Florida indie-pop-rockers (not to be confused with those krazy kids addicted to Pop Rocks we knew growing up, cuz those kids grew up and are now called meth heads) Supros, did some crowd funding to get started – but sadly only raised like 45% of their goal. Awww.. But that didn’t deter them! They pressed on. Never give up! Never surrender! They wont RITZ’s 2014 Band Slam series and have opened for all sorts of peeps like Capital Cities (who have praised their live show). They sound like a band that’d be dope live, too. They even have a TAMBOURINE. Who needs cowbell… Choke on that Bruce Dickinson.
