Hailing from Exeter, not the prep school Phillips Exeter, but the Cathedral city in southwest England best known for being a wool trade hub in the late 19th century and then destroyed in WW2, Shit Present (ya… they actually named their band “Shit Present”) rival the six piece Nashville rock outfit Diarrhea Planet for worst poop-featured band name… Despite their crappy names, both bands rock out quite efficiently. Shit Present is a hodge podge of people actively full-time in other bands who figured they weren’t busy enough to take on another project. Their self-titled EP came out a few months ago and has a pretty chill indie-grunge-lofi feel to it, if you’re in to that sorta thing. Still can’t believe they named their band Shit Present, but the internet seems to love it. I mean, it’s definitely…. memorable…? Here’s two different sounding songs: one loud, one soft. Oh ya, they’ve got a sweet music video for “Kick Me” featuring a really cute little girl angsting around town. Definitely worth checking out.

Virginia Beach rockers turned quasi-indie-shoegazers, Turnover, put out a super chill and well done album last year: Peripheral Vision. Maybe I was just tired and stressed and needed something easy while cooking the other night, but it was exactly what I needed (been on repeat since). Their sophomore effort’s a big change from their roots (band name foreshadowing?!), especially with the help of their Superego. No. Superego is not a made up word or someone’s delusions of grandeur – it helps hold notes you hit on the guitar and builds a few chords on top of each other, creating layers underneath, making the sound bigger. Press play from the start next time you’re just chilling at home if you want. Or don’t. Whatever really. I’ll listen for both of us. No one’s reading this anyways. Popsicles and tootsie rolls at the state fair. See? You didn’t even catch that. Cool…

Full Album Below – Choice tracks for perusing: 1, 6, 8, 10 – so Says Feli
Finds stability while dream-weaving grunge. Swede-turned-Brit enrolls in sound engineering courses. Records demos on Garageband. Swede receives offers from record companies. Swede doesn’t even have a band yet. Makes friends. Records tracks. Makes more friends. Records killer debut full-length album. Swede remembers fondly her two months before UK, living in Iceland, caring for horses. Swede names band Kid Wave. Plays first sold out show in March 2015. Tours all over Europe with The Vaccines.

Oxford Rock ‘n’ Stroller Willie J Healey is fresh off his debut EP and out with a new single. Channeling Mac De Marco, the hazy surf-rockin’ 20 year old records his jams fully in his garage, hoping it comes out “like The Beach Boys mixed with Meatloaf, maybe.” THAT is a mix… Best part about WJH is his ride. He was going to buy a van, ended up coming home with an old limo…. which he says is dope for like, showing up to gigs in, but a tad impractical when popping to the store for some milk. That said, 2nd best is how polite the young man is. With regards to his garage recordings, and his limo, below an actual apology note he wrote to his neighbors:

–

“Dear Neighbour,

I’m writing to apologise for my recent behaviour, and to set the record straight on a few things. It turns out that sound-proofing a garage is pretty damn hard and to get the guitar tone I like I have to turn my amp up all the way, otherwise it sounds like the beach boys throwing up. All at the same time. In harmony. I’m sure you understand. I am particularly embarrassed about the burger wrapper that blew into your pond. Who knew fish would want to eat that stuff?

Anyway, I hope they’re now ok. I think I’ve managed to recover all of the clothes that were taken from your clothes-line. I personally didn’t find it funny when Eddy dressed up in your wife’s clothes, but you’re only 20 once. Unfortunately the midnight tones are essential – but I’ll be more selective about who I invite over in the future.

I’ll also try to be more careful about knocking your bins over with my car. The trouble is that it’s quite long and really awkward to turn. Oh and for those who asked, I call it surf rock. But whatever, Homemade stuff all sounds the same to me. Come hang with me sometime.

Willie”

So I’ve been listening to lots of new music this week and truthfully, I’m a bit exhausted. I’ve been researching my magazines, reading sites, talking to friends (mostly my concert boyfriend – Joe Ciolli). Then I listened to an album that came out last week by a nine-piece band that’s always fluxing members depending on what they’re trying to accomplish. It’s wonderful. For real though. Really REALLY good. Seldom these days do you find an actually creative sound (you can tell I’m serious cuz I haven’t made any wisecracks yet). A sound that keeps changing and you guessing. Where you don’t even know which song you’re on because it’s just a ride you’ve gotta enjoy. A car ride with no destination, a “fuck it, let’s just drive.” A “clear eyes fulls hearts” journey. It’s not the radio friendly, done a thousand times album, with verse-hook-chorus-verse-hook-chorus-bridge-chorus songs, but an album meant to be listened to all the way through. Actually listened to. Think like, the polar opposite of a Katy Perry album.

The World Is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die have a serious title shot for Album of the Year in whatever genre some jerks decide to put them in (but don’t think about genres, just listen – Feli Said So). Harmlessness is complex, and smart. These cats tried really hard. Here are some quotes from Music Reviewers since I know you cake-eaters don’t believe me:

“It’s a powerful, human thing — the first masterpiece in the career of a band who hopefully have a few more of those under their belt. Maybe there will be objectively “better” records that come out this year, but there will be none that I love more.” – James Rettig; Stereogum

“The emo revival ends here because its flagship band made the best indie rock record of 2015, period.” – Ian Cohen; Vice

“Harmlessness is the gold standard for all of 2015 […] What matters is this: Harmlessness is a perfect record and it’s the best one we’ll hear in 2015 and nothing will come close. The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die have created their magnum opus and the most transcendent and challenging piece of music to emerge from modern rock in a long, long time.” – Drew Beringer; Absolutepunk

“Their Epitaph debut may have been met with trepidation in some quarters, but it absolutely obliterates expectations: a masterpiece of emotional dexterity and musical precision, and an absolute must-hear.” – Gareth O’Malley; TrebelZine

Ok, enough seriousness. Back to jokes. Feli – Out.

Junior Prom, a magical time when (acne) blossoming youngsters experience their first taste of real world dating: asking equally nervous and insecure jerkholes to maybe? go to prom with them, while everyone balances their potential better offers and invites to come… then realizing you don’t have a date and the big day’s ALMOST here (UGH!), you say “…Yes?” to Jimmy, only to be asked by Chad THAT SAME AFTERNOON!! OMG FML… and then obviously say “Yes!” to Chad and text Jimmy: “Sorry… I just can’t right now (insert random emoji).” Only for Chad to realize Susie now wants to go with him and Susie is like, SO much prettier than you… So you text Jimmy what time he’s picking you up and pretend like you never told him to get lost. Anyways, this Junior Prom is a indie rock duo from Brooklyn.

Unsigned Welsh trio, The Hearts, are attacking 2015 with the brash and bravado of Gareth Bale and….umm… are there any other cool & famous Welsh athletes..? :-/ umm… no, Ryan Giggs is not cool and does not count. Hopefully like Gary Bale, they leave the UK soon and come visit the states and bring this new sound with them… I think it’s called rawk-n-role..? Idk, it’s something new the kids are crazy for. It’s fast paced indie rock and really sounds great. I had to dig in to the Welsh music blog scene to find out anything about them… Ya. I’m just as surprised by that statement as you are. Anyways, for any UKers on here. They are on tour. London May 21.

Give it a shot. Press play. I dare you.

LA indie-electronica rocker, AWOLNATION, started a few years back when Aaron Bruno was tired of collaborating and needed a creative outlet to pursue solo (so he started a new band and got a ton of ppl to play with him…. weird that that’s “solo”). And since Red Bull is all about being independent (and totally extreme, brah!), Red Bull Records offered him free studio access, gave him a case of Sugar-Free, and told him to get crackin’! After a few mega hits, he’s back with his second studio album and it’s pretty darn cool and all over the place. The Oakland Raiders fan is currently on tour (just did SXSW) and hitting Europa before coming back to the US late spring/early summer. Two shows in NYC – Irving Plaza: who’s in?

PRIDES (sometimes PR/DES), a threesome of Glasgow synthpoppers (the most edgy popper-based musician subgenre), started kickin’ up dust in 2014 with sporadic track releases – all dope tracks, really. Making the move from punk to electropop (which tells a lot about why they’re so good) was a natural progression, and the self proclaiming pop-junky Paramore fans are planning on releasing a real album this year before summer, which would be siiiick yo, cuz we wouldn’t have to hold our breath for that long, son! So here’s two tracks to tickle your ear-taste-buds.

It’s been workin’ for Simon… :-/ feli says listen
