Disclosure second album, Caracal, came out back in September and now the duo are putting out remixes to celebrate the release of ‘Magnets’ as a proper single. One of these remixes comes from UK producer and electronic experimentalist Jon Hopkins. Hopkins’ version pulls apart the original, stripping and stretching it into a pulsating and sprawling 7-minute atmospheric journey. What’s even more impressive is that Hopkins utilizes the subtle arrangements buried in Disclosure’s version, distorts the bassline, and morphs Lorde’s vocals —almost to the point of being unrecognizable — to create the essential elements of his own version. If nothing else, the remix is a study in how far a song can be stretched and morphed to create something bolder and entirely new.

It’s covers like this that make me wonder who really drives the ship? Songwriters or producers? How can one of last year’s top pop songs translate so well to the rock world. Leave it up to Chicago based Local H for having the right vision and running with it. “I remember going down a Lorde rabbit hole on YouTube last summer, and the song that really stuck with me was ‘Team,'” recalls Local H frontman Scott Lucas. “The lyrics killed me. They were everything I’d been wanting to hear someone say in a pop song. I sorta teared up a little. I tried playing an acoustic version at a show in January, but quickly realized that the song was an anthem and should be rocked out. Besides, acoustic Lorde is the Boss’s territory now.”

OK, I get it, people really like Royals. Its a good song and all, but frankly I’m pretty tired of it and Team and Tennis Court, etc. Judging from the Grammy’s, Lorde and her unique style of zombie dancing (which consequently made me like her a little more) are not going anywhere. So, if everyone wants to hear a little Lorde, here are a two tracks that will meet that need while changing it up a little bit.

The first one comes to us from Wolf Saga, who has done a number of nice covers (Daft Punk, Peter, Bjorn and John). He is joined here by LYON for this cover of Team. Johnny admits “I couldn’t do Lorde justice with my vocals if I wanted to, but LYON killed it.” I wholeheartedly agree.

In the Sleepless Club, WEKEED do a nice mashup of Lorde’s The Love Club and Flume‘s Sleepless. It has a kind of smooth feel that really gives this track a subtly different flavor that either of the originals.

Tell us about any other riffs on Lorde songs that you know of because if I need them desperately to placate the Lorde-ites while retaining my sanity.

Who’s buzzing right now more than Lorde? Just as news breaks of her debut full length album, Pure Heroin (yes, thats what the 16 year old Kiwi songstress is calling it) dropping Sep 30th, Brooklyn’s finest post-folk rockers, American Authors, drop this handsome cover. Enjoy! ***UPDATE***this just in, Pure Heroine, not Heroin. FML

(WTF Max, that track Royals from last year was kinda hard to miss. Oh well.) 16 years old from New Zealand, her second EP Tennis Court drops in a couple of weeks and i’m stoked on this video in a very Tim Burton meets Lana Del Rey kinda way.
