As a Wellesley boy, I gots to give it up to my fellow Massholes. In this case, we’ve got a double threat of New England brash with Magic Man & SKATERS teaming up in what I’m going to deem one of the better remix collabs of the year thus far. Here, Magic Man takes the rough around the edges, lo-fi punk sound of SKATERS and adds in their signature sound of synths and driving danceable beats. The result is catchy as hell. However, the original is badass in its own right and must be heard as well. Stream them both below.

And for a frame of reference, check out the original which is also fucking awesome in a totally different way.

2013 was a year of nostalgia, for me personally and also in the music that accompanied me throughout, more so than any year I can remember. This year was also my first here at the Most Definitely, which I can’t thank Max and Tim enough for. In putting together my hour-long 2013 year-end playlist, I really tried to focus on this retro-yet-new and exciting feel that embodied the past year. From the ’70s sound of the Preatures; ’80s of Oliver, Holy Ghost! and Wild Nothing; to the ’90s of Cut Copy and Jagwar Ma, it is all there — refreshingly nostalgic, yet freshly new.

Hopefully, this playlist captures the crazy ride that was 2013 and joins the ranks of Tim’s, Max’s, and Jason’s. Give it a listen below and here’s to what 2014 has to offer!

San Fermin – Sonsick (Magic Man Remix) + (Vacationer Remix)

San Fermin, the work of Brooklyn composer and songwriter Ellis Ludwig-Leone, released the excellent single Sonsick at the very end of last year. This elegant track described by Ellis as “… a panic attack disguised as a birthday party,” has been making the playlist rounds since then and been roundly applauded from all quarters.

Over the last several months a couple of remixes have lent new flavor and direction to this already amazing song. TMD favorites Magic Man and Vacationer have each brought their particular talents to remaking this track and have come through with flying colors. Magic Man weaves in a synth-o-licious sound while Vacationer brings their own unique take to the wonderful Sonsick building blocks. I think you’ll enjoy both of their efforts, but we’d like to hear from YOU, which one is your favorite!

Atlas Genius – If So (Magic Man Remix)

File under: perfect. TMD favorites Magic Man team up with another TMD champion, Atlas Genius to form an electropop force to be reckoned with. Here, the boys take their pop anthem ‘If So’ and turn it out into some electro pop bliss. The end result makes me smile. Side note: I’m having trouble forming sentences today. So just listen.

The Colourist – Yes Yes (Magic Man Remix)

Our DC based cronies, All Things Go have gone ahead and found a gem here with The Colourist. They’ve been dunking on the hype machine with their two singles, ‘Little Games’ & “Yes Yes’. Here we get to see what another favorite of TMD, Magic Man has for an interpretation. It’s heavy on the synths, epic bass lines and may cause permanent smiles. Enjoy.

Magic Man took over our world last month when we finally hopped on the train ahead of their popshop supporting gig with Ghost Beach. We immediately fell in love with their poppy, happy go lucky hit single, ‘Paris’. It had all the makings of a killer pop song. Enter Pacific Air, who took the upbeat and sunshine filled track and took it on a detour down into the depths of the unknown with this synthed out, steel drum darkness inducing remix that will have you shivering for days.

Magic Man – Nova Scotia

Less than a week after absolutely slaying Santos party house in support of Ghost Beach last thurs, Magic Man annouces huge news…they’ve signed with with Neon Gold Records/Columbia Records. Congratulations all around! This is extremely well deserved. The announcement came with an excellent new track titled Nova Scotia and i’m loving it. Catch Magic Man on tour with MS MR this spring and Walk the Moon later in the fall.
