Wise Blood – Alarm

While I can’t say I am a fan of Wise Blood or arson, I can say I am seriously addicted to this song. I found Alarm while scanning the blogosphere trying to fill out a playlist for the week and was immediately captivated by the song’s dragging beat. The more I listened, the more I was pulled into every twist and turn created by Chris Laufman’s (a.k.a. Wise Blood) incredible layering – which includes everything from alarm-like horn samples to a graceful piano. Ultimately, it all amounts to a well crafted, albeit twisted, pop song. I don’t know what to expect from Wise Blood’s full-length debut, id, due out June 25th; but what I do know is I cannot stop hitting repeat on this song.

PAPA – If You’re My Girl, Then I’m Your Man

This morning while waiting for the T, I wasn’t only pleasantly surprised by the nice weather and an on-time train, but a brand-new release from LA-based group PAPA. PAPA’s debut EP A Good Woman is Hard to Find from 2011 put these guys on my radar and the proceeding singles have only wet my appetite for their forthcoming LP due out this summer. “If You’re My Girl, Then I’m Your Man” isn’t as punchy as their other songs, but it certainly makes up for that with a fuller and more expansive sound. If you haven’t had a chance to check them out, PAPA have been gracious enough to post their best work (in my opinion) to a set on their soundcloud page. A close friend and I were having a talk yesterday about sub-genres of music, coming to the conclusion that if we could only listen to one sub-genre for the rest of our living days it’d be Scandinavian dream-pop/electro-pop. Seriously, what is in the water in the Baltic Sea? This year alone, the likes of Kate Boy, MØ, and Icona Pop have burst onto the scene following in the footsteps of the many artists before them. Well, that was a long-winded way of saying: add Postijonen to the list. About a month ago, they dropped Supreme, which is easily going to be one of my top songs of the summer. Then they returned yesterday withthe softer and grander On the Run. Give it a listen and keep an eye out for their debut Skyer, due out June 5th stateside.
