Typified in the early 90s by the blurring of component musical parts, typically guitar distortion, feedback and obscured vocals, the term “shoegaze” was coined by the British music press to ridicule the stage presence of artists who stood still during live performances, detached, introspective, and non-confrontational with their heads down. Their heads were down staring at their “shoes” in the aforementioned “gaze,” as the genre requires the heavy use of foot pedals – hence “shoegaze” (mystery solved). The noise-rockers from Philly, Nothing, have a rocky origin story. Here’s the condensed version: Man is in to hardcore punk scene. Man and friends enjoy getting violent at shows and causing mayhem. Man stabs another during fight and spends two years in jail. Man spends four years soul searching, debating whether to “blow his brains out every day.” Man makes new music and signs to Relapse Records, releasing now two albums (2014 & 2016) with favorable to very favorable reviews. New album out 2 weeks ago, Tired of Tomorrow, is worth a listen through. Today, though.

Back in January we discussed all the sweet stuff going down in Philly. Besides being a hot bed for meat sweats and subsequent stair running, Cold Fronts frontman, and only remaining original member, Craig Almquist is a role model for all Creed-esque youngsters looking to roll with the punches and take a shot at the title. Every since he started the band in 2010, he’s surrounded himself with a revolving door of “band members” (almost as bad as Taking Back Sunday). Basically rando Philly friends who want to play/tour/whatever… Through all the consistent inconsistency, Craig just shrugs and laughs: “on a positive note, this band technically can’t break up unless I quit.” And for anyone that thinks SXSW is a bunch of overhyped tech-hipster bologna (umm… me), Craig got his break while playing an impromptu show at SX, and just by chance, the legendary Sire Records founder, Seymour “Butts” Stein (dude who signed The Ramones and Talking Heads forever ago) walked by, liked what he heard, snagged a CD, and signed them the next year.

Philly is a pretty cool town, and despite the naysayers, some real strong stuff comes outta the City of Brotherly Love (I didn’t know Philadelphia literally meant that :-/, I thought they called it that cuz ppl high-fived a lot, or they had a sweet YMCA or something): the Fresh Prince, The Wonder Years, all 17 Rocky movies, the $100 cheesesteak at Barclay Prime made with kobe beef, Taleggio cheese, shaved truffles and sauteed foie gras, It’s Always Sunny, and don’t forget Bob Saget and the best Lawrence brother (no! not Joey! ew). This indie haze five-way, Cheerleader, are from Philly too. Now, let’s be Frank (Reynolds), I certainly don’t put them in the same league as the Barclay Prime cheesesteak – or The Wonder Years for that matter – but some nice warm background summer music in January seemed appropriate. But since I’ve been getting complaints that lately I’ve covered too much “happy” music, I’ll be back with a vengeful depression soon.

I don’t even listen to me, so why do what Feli Says?
