Tom Swoon – Phoenix (We Rise)

Appearing majestically out of Ultra Music this week comes “Phoenix” (We Rise), the fresh collaborative single from Polish producer and DJ Tom Swoon, who has worked with the renowned bass artist DANK and UK vocalist Belle Humble for the release.

“Phoenix” is a moving, sweeping piece of house with an electric undercurrent of energy that runs at its very core throughout. Swoon and DANK have layered the instrumental sections here incredibly well, using well-placed synths and piano as solid foundations for Humble’s expressive vocals.

So that was 2013 huh? Pretty solid year. I’ve been working on this list all year. Full disclosure, if you’re looking for the obvious “Best of 2013″ list, this is not for you. This is more about the tracks that might have slipped through the cracks, the tracks that never quite got the attention they deserved. Some of them are more obvious than others (read: Daft Punk). While others, need to be heard (read: Streets of Laredo).

How do you boil down a year to 15 songs? In my case, you don’t. You make a soundcloud best of and a Spotify Best of list. We had a banner year personally, professionally and musically. A lot of firsts that I am extremely thankful for. Rather than sit here and wax poetic on what was definitely the best year of my life, why don’t you just sit back and listen to these tunes that helped make 2013 so special?

It’s America’s birthday ya’ll. So what better way to celebrate with a 3 year old song from a French band remixed by an Australian production duo? I know, right? Spot on. I’m not entirely sure why this happens to catch me today, but this was released before TMD was even bout that hustle. For some reason, it seems appropriate. Maybe it’s cause everyone else at TMD decided to check out for the week. Who knows? But this record was ahead of its time. A full blown remix album three years before everyone Tom Dick and Harry was hip to the game. Respect.

2013 is the year of Peter Thomas. We here at TMD see no bounds for what he’s capable of. He’s the man behind the incredible Betty Who – The Movement EP that came out earlier this month. Now, he’s taking his talents to Paris. And we’re all fortunate enough to hear the results. Here we get a delicious, glitched out indie dance rerub of Phoenix’s ‘Entertainment’. Phoenix is one of my favorite bands, that’s no lie. Seeing them at Summer Stage in the rain in 2009 changed my life. And I can honestly tell you that this version far surpasses the original version. There I said it. I’m not mad. I’m proud that a fellow New Englander can show those French boys a thing or two about dance music. You listening Daft Punk?

The Hood Internet – Ignition (1901 Remix) (R. Kelly x Phoenix)

If you were at Coachella on Saturday anxiously waiting for Daft Punk to come out and melt your face, then you definitely saw that knee buckling curveball that was R. Kelly coming out on stage with Phoenix for the weirdest / best live mashup of all time. So many emotions were running through us disbelief, laughter, disapointment but ultimately – I saw it for what it was. Phoenix politely giving everyone the finger. Every person was talking about Daft Punk dropping by their set and it was almost doomed to fail unless they did just that. Phoenix is an awesome band on their own. They don’t need Daft Punk to drop by to melt faces. So they brought in R. Kelly. BAM. How bout that? I like it.
