The Sun Days on Mondays

Why do we call it “Sunday Scaries”? I’ve heard folks use that term to describe the looming fear of the ever fast approaching Monday work day; which it then should be called the Monday Scaries… Right? Or am I missing something? You’re “scared” of Monday. Then again, I’ve also heard it described as the sort of Sunday hangover shakes from boozing all weekend and foggily recounting your last 36 hours of mistakes (where did these pro-Trump texts from someone named Frank come from/why is the Chinese food delivery guy asleep on my couch/why do my heels have no heels/this isn’t my shirt), while realizing you are indeed a tax paying adult with responsibilities and employees to manage in a few short hours. That sounds terrible. But I still don’t get the “scaries” part :-/. Either way, next time the Sunday scaries come a’creepin, you can find relief in The Sun Days – who are none of the above things – (and who may or may not have essentially copied another band’s name), providing breezy Cali-inspired beach indiepop by way of Sweden. They are happy, fun and all around super chill awesome. Stereogum called them “one of the best new bands in the world” back in their February review – bold, to say the least. They also mentioned that calling your band The Sun Days (with a space in between “Sun” and “Days”) is “a lot like adopting the name Churches or Limp Biscuit or Ray, Dio Head.” HA. Nice one. Their 2016 debut album, meticulously titled “Album,” is real real nice.

Tundran is Still Afraid (of spiders?)

This Indie/New wave/Disco duo from Sweden (which could abbreviate as “INDi” duo, but then it’d be really misleading) (although SwINDi Duo sounds amazing), Tundran, are just two dudes, Felix and Jakob, blending sounds from bands like, Lemaitre, LCD Soundsystem, Chromeo, 1975, etc… and making a nice “play by the pool”-tune. Kinda perfect for day dreaming on a Monday in February… Anywho, they try and use all real instruments in their songs, which they made sure to mention when interviewed. I guess that’s respectable since they’re… umm… musicians and what not… Listening to what Tundran is afraid of (being loved) made me think about what I’m truly afraid of. Is it being alone? Being homeless? Have no legs? I think it’d have to be the tunnel of insects and spiders from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. I don’t think there is anything worse than that, besides like, having to get through that tunnel and having no legs :-/

Swede plays in all girl punk band. Feels uninspired. Swede is disillusioned with indie scene in home country. Swede moves to London in search of new beginnings. Finds stability while dream-weaving grunge. Swede-turned-Brit enrolls in sound engineering courses. Records demos on Garageband. Swede receives offers from record companies. Swede doesn’t even have a band yet. Makes friends. Records tracks. Makes more friends. Records killer debut full-length album. Swede remembers fondly her two months before UK, living in Iceland, caring for horses. Swede names band Kid Wave. Plays first sold out show in March 2015. Tours all over Europe with The Vaccines. Dreams of one day playing America.

Tove Styrke – Kiddo (LP)

Another Electropop Swede gettin’ after it in the USofA with a new album this month is Tove Styrke (it’s becoming a well known thing that Sweden makes the best pop). And if you were wondering, she is NOT the mispronounced euro daughter of Tony Stark and her raunchier Swede counterpart Tove Lo, but a whole other person of Swedish origins with a dope name. If I married her I would totally take her last name… “Felipe Styrke” but change it to “Stryke” to make more badass… so #hipster #brooklyn. Her new album Kiddo is pretty awesome, tackling feminism, sexism, and being whoever you wanna be, instead of who you “should be.”

Galantis – Pharmacy (LP)

Swedish EDM newish superduo, Galantis, are independently behind hits likes Britney’s “Toxic” and Icona Pop’s “I Love It.” So these Grammy winning dudes decided to team up and knock some socks off. They played Coachella in 2014, only 2 weeks after their first release, and won a Billboard Poll asking fans who had the most memorable live dance music set; beating Calvin Harris, Disclosure, Girl Talk, etc… They played Ultra in Miami this year, and the International Dance Music Awards (IDMAs?? How’d they not call it the MDMAs??) (seriously though… there are WAY too many awards shows! Not EVERYONE deserves a freakin’ participation ribbon. Damn liberal child-huggers not keeping score at soccer games anymore. You know who knows the score? The kid that WON!! Ugh.. between the Emmy’s, Tony’s, Grammy’s, Razzies, AVN’s, Darwin Awards, there’s even a Bloggies(!), 80 different music awards… not to mention country music has an award show every other week, no joke. Turn on the TV. The CMA’s are on, like right now. I’ll wait)… they won best breakthrough artist of 2015. Brand new album out called Pharmacy. It’s quite good.

Gowdang Sweden. Good thing talent is a renewable resource because otherwise you’d be in for some international flack. Music here sounds a bit like Little Daylight, Tove Lo, MØ and Little Dragon, but besides that, girl’s sexy as hell. That gets you far, if we’re being real. All-around good new pop here.
