Saturdays are weird. They allow me to explore the things I can’t get to during the week. I find all kinds of amazing things that otherwise would get left out of this beautiful life. So here I am, getting all kinds of emotional today. I think I finally have cleared the haze that is the post SXSW blues and now I’m sitting here reliving so many of the moments that we helped to create. I’m blown away by what we were able to accomplish this year at The Yard. If you were there, then you know the magic that happened. If you weren’t, my heart legitimately goes out to you. In the past few days I’ve been reviewing photos from the show, listening to the bands that were there and just making sure that I will never ever forget what happened down there in Austin. It’s a truly special experience to be so passionate about something and to see that passion play out before your eyes. The friendships that are made, the memories and just the love down there is unforgettable. Please go sometime. You owe it to yourself. If you ever want to know what we’re truly all about, come join us next year at our Southby event. I’m sure it will be amazing.

So anyway, sorry for rambling. Let’s get down to business. I am so high on SAFIA I can’t help it. They have played two of our shows and I’d argue they are one of the best unsigned acts in the world right now. They are simply electric to see live. Goosebumps. The whole time. The talent and raw emotion just chokes me up. Listen to this song and just let it take you away. Is it a remix? Yes. Did they perform it live? Yes. Did I cry? Yeah I cried and I’m kind of crying now.

Daniel Wilson – Proofread

My measly words will never be enough to paint the full picture of how deep this song resonates within me — it is insurmountable, really. But my phrases are all I’ve got, so I’ll give it my best shot. This track renders me helpless, I completely lose self-control. I stop everything to just be with the sounds, the words… the music. And I say that with complete honesty, without one ounce of dramatization or sarcasm. The power of Daniel Wilson supercharges me into an emotional nirvana: where the haze of heartache is lifted, where I understand that love can and should be effortless. I’m inspired to stop fighting for things that never were mine, and motivated to open my eyes to those that always have been.

Even more, I first found Daniel’s voice — that of a born-and-raised Detroit boy — on the most majestically rainy day down in Austin, TX during SXSW on the Mostly Junk Food x Fancy PR stage. That day was life-changing for reasons more than one, but finding him and this song certainly fits that bill. There is nearly no reason for me to dissect his breathtakingly ingenuous lyrics because… well, they speak for themselves. So below, I give to you my best visual representation of his genius. From me to you.

As you listen, I ask you to really do just that — just listen.

Broken Luxury – Block the Wind

Sonically innovative with an undeniable magnetism, the B r o k e n L u x u r y boys are a contagious force continuously proving they’ve got what it takes to be the ones you want singin’ and drummin’ you home. Josh Reynolds’ vocals are mesmerizingly pure yet rough with honesty and life. His words are amplified seamlessly by the beating perfection of Zach Golden, who drives their sound to climatic bliss.

The Most Definitely was lucky to have Josh and Zach blow out the last candle at our SXSW showcase with Wind-up Records. They took us to nirvana with an encore performance, closing the stage for the 21 acts that sparkled before them over two magnificent, hot n’ sweaty Texas days. Some cried, others smiled and together, well, we all danced.

Genevieve – Human Again

SXSW, man…. what a trip. On our last late night, the team sat around drinking beer while reliving our highlights, retelling our best moments with sincerity and pride. Can I share with you mine?

Nothing more than a first look is needed to whole-heartedly know G e n e v i e v e is a star. She shines magnificently bright, controlling the room with her unique, effortlessly perfect sound and totally consuming stage presence. She is a poet — a true, soulful writer. Genevieve eloquently shares her stories through beautiful composition and with powerful engagement. If I were to wake up a musician, I’d hope to look in the mirror to see her reflection.

“Human Again” had a particularly deep, profound affect on me. Watching these words leave her lips live was transforming. It was like feeling love for the first time — I couldn’t look away and I never wanted it to end.

I used to be my father’s daughter
Everything I did was for attention
Like an undercover soldier,
Posing for a picture of perfection
Sleeping in so late that by the time I woke up,
The day had turned to night.

It feels like I’m almost human,
It feels like I’m almost back in my skin.

CRUISR – Go For It

Talk about picking up steam. As you may or may not know, we’ve been huge supporters of CRUISR for a quite some time. And now they are on an absolute roll. We’ve watched them grow up right before our eyes and it’s incredibly satisfying to see good things come to good people. It all started two years ago when we first heard “Don’t Go Alone“. Shortly thereafter we booked them to perform at our first ever live showcase. Here we are a year and a half later and they’ve signed to Vagrant Records and since toured with The 1975. They deserve it all. This release, is arguably their strongest yet and if it’s a sign of things to come, things are only getting better. We’re stoked to say they’ll be joining us in Austin on March 19th at The Yard. I fully expect it to be nothing short of amazing.

Parade of Lights – Burn

SXSW is all about new music, new friends and discovery. And tacos. One of the MANY bands I fell in love with out there was LA-based Parade of Lights. Fucking blew my mind, really. They were one of the tightest and fullest sounding bands we came across on our 4 day run out in Austin. They just released an their Golden EP today and we got to preview these tunes out in Texas and I’m here to tell you, each one of these tunes is MASSIVE. So take a listen to ‘Burn’ but really, listen to the whole damn EP cause each song is like fire. And I have a massive crush of keyboard player.

SXSW Alert – Steel Phantoms

This is why I love living in Williamsburg. You walk 6 blocks on a weeknight and see bands like Steel Phantoms in front of 100 people. Its about impeccable songwriting and flawless execution for drummer/lead vocalist Aaron Harris (yes, very Helm/Henley/Collins of them) and guitarist Jesse Newkirk. I’ve literally listened to Curtain Call and Friend to Friend twice a day for the last month. These are technically the singles but TMD’s favorite track off the live set is still unreleased (hint: its called Overflow and you can only hear it live…unless, of course, you want to come to my place and weird out on my deck whilst listening to the bootleg version I recorded from their show at Cameo last month). Well done gentlemen. We can’t wait for the EP in June. SXSW ALERT: be sure to see them at the Brew Exchange on 6th Street tomorrow night (3/14) at 9pm. You can thank me later.
