GIBBZ – Love Again

GIBBZ, the drunken, obnoxious, and offensive mess-of-a-Brooklynite alter ego of the Berklee College of Music grad, Mike Gibney. His pals convinced him it was “ok to drink copious amounts of alcohol and make everyone within a 30 ft radius uncomfortable.” So if I got this straight, he get’s hammed up, and makes little hip swaying jams, then wakes up with no recollection of the night’s events. I don’t have much info on this dude, but it seems he’s only recently gettin’ the ball rolling, with a couple 4-track EPs and some guest spots. Guess time will if anything comes of him…

LA-band HOLYCHILD call themselves “brat pop” – but also refer to themselves as “if Katy Perry, Andy Warhol, and Robyn had a menage-a-tryst and out popped a perfect pop baby for adults only.” Sounds a little pedophile-ish but whatever, I can flex with it. They were offered a 25K radio deal if they changed their sound to be “Icona Pop meets Daft Punk”, but they said “no way Jose! we’re not changin’ for the man!” Just by chance “Jose” was the name of their manager at the time. So they fired him and pushed forward. Hopefully they’re not still broke… but their tracks are rackin’ up clicks, so I think they’ll be ok!

Taken from Kevin Bronson @ BuzzbandsLA: “What the world needs now is another producer-driven electro-pop duo like I need a whole in my head.” I couldn’t have said the words better myself. BUT, if you listen, realllllly listen, you’ll find some excellent new stuff out there. Sabzi is on his third musical endeavor, and this one’s real solid: Made In Heights. Ya, it’s sexy-synth-pop… Ya, the electro-dreamscape genre is a bit saturated… So what? Good tunes are good tunes. Deal with it. Ambient solo sounds. Pianos. Cellos. Sleepy vocals. All with a synth-twist?? C’mon, son! Turn the lights down – Turn the bass up. The LA-based duo dropped this new track this week.

Tigertown – Papernote

If we all try really hard, maybe we can just will summer’s arrival… cuz these cold cloudy April showers thing isn’t cutting it for me. At least today is crazy nice in NYC. Helping usher it in, Aussie band, Tigertown, whom the synth-pop gods doth shined the fire of a thousand suns upon, especially with their new single. They just toured with Magic Man (I’ve been mentioning them a lot lately, haven’t I? Did I mention that I also really really like them? No..? Ok I will later). Tigertown was selected a couple years back by Village Records, a NYU student-run label that chooses one band to help promote and break into the music industry. Pretty cool right? I can’t remember my school offering anything like that… :-/ All I got is a stinkin’ blog.

PRIDES – 2 tickling tracks

PRIDES (sometimes PR/DES), a threesome of Glasgow synthpoppers (the most edgy popper-based musician subgenre), started kickin’ up dust in 2014 with sporadic track releases – all dope tracks, really. Making the move from punk to electropop (which tells a lot about why they’re so good) was a natural progression, and the self proclaiming pop-junky Paramore fans are planning on releasing a real album this year before summer, which would be siiiick yo, cuz we wouldn’t have to hold our breath for that long, son! So here’s two tracks to tickle your ear-taste-buds.

Fresh off another damn Pats victory, sexy synth-pop Bostonian quintet, CliffLight, all met at Berklee College of Music, although they “don’t wanna be known as a Berklee band,” which is weird since THAT’S where they met, and wouldn’t exist without it… but whatever. We should be glad they did cuz they are doing great things. They’re either ubes mysterious, or are just jerks and don’t like sharing (even though everyone know that’s the same as caring) because there’s like, no real info about them on the interwebs. Either way, two dope tracks below.

Kitten – Like A Stranger

If you don’t know Kitten, now you know! For real. 19-year old Chloe Chaidez has rock star written all over her, and if you ever see her live you will truly understand – she shredded the stage so hard her skin-tight kimono (yes, she was indeed sporting a kimono) was left in tatters by then end of her set. Daughter of a punk rocker, Chloe has been around the scene since a really young age… probably too young if you ask me. When she was ten she was playing bass in a novelty cover band… I guess kids in LA really DO start early with the whole “sex, drugs and rock n’ roll” thing. Regardless, we should all be thankful to her pops, cuz she signed with Atlantic at 15 years old, and is killing it for us. What did YOU do at 15?? That’s what I thought…

Electronica synth-popper duo living in LA, PrOfiles, write about “sex, addiction, hypnotherapy and love” (doesn’t “synth-popper” sounds like some newfangled rich kid club drug? Kids these days and their synth-popping…). Not much known about ’em since they just formed up last year, but they’re catching some good press. The duo have been friends for over 10 years, and claim to share “identical musical influences” – idk, that could be great, could be disastrous… :-/ Definitely a band to watch for in 2015.
