[REVIEW] Winter Showcase – Miss Velvet

With her flawlessly untamed hair draping down an intricately patterned coat, the crowd turned silent at our winter showcase last Thursday the moment an effortlessly beautiful Miss Velvet took the stage. Though unsure of what to expect, I will say I was completely shocked with what happened next: an unassumingly deep roar ripped from her lips and through the microphone — the voice of someone you’d characterize as twice her size. Her stage presence matched this larger-than-life persona, dancing from side to side with thrusting hips and lunging legs. I was totally engaged throughout, mesmerized by her sound and her energy. Girl crush doesn’t even begin to cover it.

City of the Sun took things from 0 to 100 real quick last night at our first showcase of 2015. You’ve honestly never heard a crowd coo like this before. The room was filled full with pretty girls, their eyes starry and hearts reaching for the beautiful boys on stage. And you certainly couldn’t blame them, they had every reason to be feeling that way. John Pita, Avi Snow and Zach Para really have it figured out. The charming trio’s sound is down-right powerful. The way their hands move on their instruments, the way their bodies move to the beat… they define experiential music. You hear vocals even though none are being sung. With two guitars, a box and bells, these boys — excuse me, men — have reinvented the acoustic music wheel.

TMD Presents: Seasick Mama, Walking Shapes, KOPPS @ The Westway 2/22

Whoa! This is going to be fun. You have heard of KOPPS, but perhaps can’t pick them out of a lineup. That’s because the Rochester duo, guilty of slaying the blogeratti with various Joywave collaborations, will be making their NYC live debut at this show! Rumor has it, lead Patricia Patrón and beats counterpart Kyle O, are particularly excited to be performing their self-described “Fuck Jams” in a former gentlemen’s club. Say no more…I’m all about this.

Next, as the last stop on their Northeast tour with Seasick Mama, Walking Shapes will unleash a captivating brand of rock-n-roll that I can only describe as Radiohead meets Foals. The elaborate strings and vocals make this show mesmerizing.

Did someone say Seasick Mama? Singer/songwriter/model Marial Maher and her band have been causing quite a stir in the NYC live scene for almost a year now. Brilliant songwriting, unbridled theatrics, impeccable vocals, outrageous outfits and bountiful tattoo sleeves define this remarkably high class show. As the final stop on her 3 week long tour, this is setting up to be quite the homecoming!

COIN – Atlas

Well if this isn’t some perfect timing then I don’t quite know what is. COIN, aka our favorite dudes from Nashville just released their newest single, ‘Atlas’ and I love it. As soon as the drums hit, you know you’re in for some serious pop bliss. I heard it a while back and thought it quickly went on rotation here at headquarters. And wouldn’t you know it, they’re playing their New York City debut THIS weekend in Brooklyn along side Cardiknox, Badboxes and Cruiser. Funny how things work out some times huh? Go get your tickets.

TMD Presents: Cardiknox @ The Knitting Factory

Not gonna lie, I’m pretty excited to announce that our Brooklyn live series debut will be on Saturday, August 10th at Knitting Factory. I’ve been smiling for three straight weeks as we’ve been putting this show together for you. It embodies everything we’re about here at TMD. Wonderful people, amazing experiences and the discovery of incredible indie pop music.

First up is Cruiser from Philly. Their high energy indie rock was on steady rotation at TMD HQ after a gracious introduction from Boise’s best Noah Hyde. This was one of my favorite remixes of 2012.

Next…Badboxes from Pittsburgh. When we saw them at Tammany Hall on the 12^th it was clear that their flair for northern electro falsetto would earn them another NYC bid very soon, and we’re proud to be the ones extending it.

The momentum behind Nashville’s COIN is fierce right now. I believe, when introducing their single and video for Honey last month, we ended our blog post with an open invitation to show these guys around NYC. So, this is literally a dream come true.

And finally the President and First Lady of the East Village, Cardiknox. When we heard from them earlier this year, it was clear they were well on their way to a major headline gig. Check!

And if that wasn’t enough, we’ve got Dart Party, in his DJ Set debut, spinning all night between sets.

TMD Presents: Gold Fields @ Lilium May 9th

TMD’s events arm is up and running and we’re kicking things off with a bang. TMD Presents: Gold Fields DJ set at Lilium on May 9th. Here’s the deal: Gold Fields is coming to town with LVLF and Capital Cities for their Dancing with Strangers tour earlier that evening at Irving Plaza. You should be going. Then after the show, we’re headed around the corner to Lilium in the W Hotel Union Sq where we will be hosting the after party.
