After a relatively lengthy label dispute and postponing majority of a pre-release tour, Twin Shadow is now back and set to release a new album. Eclipse, out March 17th, is the follow up to 2012’s Confess and the first on a major label for George Lewis, Jr. With Warner Brothers now footing the bill, Lewis has shown the ability to blow the doors off anthemic synthpop with Eclipse‘s first single “To The Top” and then crank out the moody, new-wave inspired, “Turn Me Up“. Third release, “I’m Ready,” is a ballad that goes for broke through a truly epic chorus and highlights the sublime production Lewis can offer. Give it a listen below.
My year in music revolved around the likes of War On Drugs, Cloud Nothings, Real Estate, Mac Demarco, and Spoon… and some others who didn’t make the list below like Ought and Parquet Courts. All of these bands offered a bit of a departure from last year’s synthy year end list — but, I guess that’s just the nature of the beast. Either way, I had a blast putting together my top tracks of ’14 and I hope you enjoy listening to them just as much.

Side note: How To Dress Well’s “What Is This Heart?” was pretty spectacular, as well.

No winners, no losers, just the 14 sounds of 2014 that make me smile the most. They are in order from the least number of Soundcloud streams to the most. And yes, one may have blatantly came out in Dec 2013, but too late to make last year’s list. Everyone deserves a fair shake, right? Great. Happy Holidays!

Who wants to hear some new Twin Shadow? Everyone does, that’s who!

This cut is one of my new favorites. I really enjoy the ensemble vocals, layered like the most delicious treat. It builds slowly to an anthemic climax and really punches it up during the chorus.

There is some serious emotional power in this track. To The Top makes me feel uplifted, like I just watched the end of Chariots of Fire or Rocky. This is the song that will close out my sports themed feel good movie, for sure. Back To The TOP!

Twin Shadow, or George Lewis, Jr., has been a staple on my iPhone ever since his debut Forget came out in 2010. The blending of nostalgic ’80s new wave and synthpop is certainly something that is right up my alley and apparently it is also right for the new Grand Theft Auto, as Lewis was asked to produce a song for the game’s soundtrack. That song happens to be “Old Love/New Love” and came out the same day as the game. In “Old Love/New Love” Lewis takes a step away from the indie-world and a step toward the dance-world with ease. It is a fantastic song that rides Lewis’ lyricism and a consistent piano through the peaks and valleys of an old love and new love.
