The first song I ever got emotional over on The Most Definitely was ‘Beggin for Thread’ by BANKS…. you’d likely remember that post for the sexually seductive photo that accompanied it more than you’d remember it for my entrance onto the page. Regardless, now that I am back in full swing writing for the boys, it feels not only timely but also very fitting of my style and taste that the song welcoming me back is this unreal rework of where it all began. There is next to nothing that can be said about this Gryffin x Hotel Garuda remix that would do it true justice, so instead of rambling on about how it makes me feel and the way it completely captivates my mind to the point I can not be distracted, I will leave you with this: I urge you to listen and dare you to find the self-control not to push play twice – because I damn well can’t.

Citing Lauryn Hill and Fiona Apple as her biggest influences, Jillian Banks’ — simply known as BANKS — rhapsodic voice and lyrical genius has quickly sprung her into the spotlight since her beginnings in 2013. She has been named an artist to watch by numerous media outlets, including Spotify naming her as one of their Artists Under the Spotify Spotlight for 2014. Personally, I first fell for BANKS when she put out Snakehips’ mix of “Warm Water”, and have yet to recover… maybe never will. “Beggin For Thread” stays true to her poetic, dark R&B soul, filling your ears with both her angelic voice and vulnerability. Add in the catchy beat, and she’s got me playing this song on repeat for the rest of the week… and then some.

For all of you up and coming producers/DJ’s in the game: follow The Chainsmokers. Homeboys just know how to do it. All around, they’re the full package. They also send the best emails in the business. It’s very apparent that they have a real passion for what they’re creating and they’re also having the time of their god damn lives doing it. This time, they take a step back from the progressive indie house that we have come to expect and they take a walk off the deep end and remix the ever lovely Banks and get all emo on us. I’m not mad about it. Now go have some sex.

Banks has continued the trend of teaming up with well-respected English producers on her new track “This Is What It Feels Like.” By now, we are getting to see where the LA native’s EP London derived its name and influence from. Like TEED on “Warm Water” and SOHN on “Waiting Game,” Lil Silva and Jamie Woon produce a dark and elegant background for Banks’ sultry vocals on the latest release. Although we may not know what ‘it’ is, we’ve certainly learned what ‘it’ feels and sounds like – and ‘it’ is good.

L.A. artist Banks introduced herself a couple of months ago with debut single “Warm Water” and now has returned with “Waiting Game.” The former was produced by Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and this newest offering by up-and-comer SOHN (his song “Bloodflows” is definitely worth a listen.) Banks’ soulful voice is nicely accompanied by a soft piano to open before heavy synths and menacing bass take over, like the encroaching darkness of a winter’s night.

Banks will be opening for the Weeknd on his upcoming tour and has a debut EP coming out soon.
