[PREMIERE] VERSA – Wanderlust (Cardiknox Remix)

Coed pop duos are where it’s at right now, and today we’re unveiling the product of two favorites colliding. After dropping their Neon EP in late January, FL based VERSA (Sierra Kay and Blake Harnage) got the exquisite remix treatment from TMD regulars, Cardiknox. When asked about the collaboration Kay says its “like hopping on a train and heading west.” Which makes sense given all the quality west coast time the NYC (via Seattle) natives Cardiknox have been putting in this summer (yes, I stalk them on instagram). In this immaculate nu-R&B rework, Cardiknox reconstructs the chord progression from delicately tuned samples of the original vocal stem. It’s an impeccably progressive take that, as Kay states, “amplifies what the whole song is about.” Check out the original and remix below!

And the award for most experimental remix of 2014 goes to…Wet for Cardiknox – Technocolor Dreaming. Im a big fan of experimental production. In fact, yesterday I found myself on a Beat Culture/Tame Impala/Animal Collective binge, so this could not have come at a better time. Wet has taken one of my favorite pop tracks from 2013 and riddled it with highly calculated yet seemingly haphazard samples anchored by my favorite chorus-ish phrase so far this year. “Am I just am I am I just am I am I just?” Of course I am. Next question.

And just like that a fresh track-of-the-year nominee has arrived. Its now no wonder that Cardiknox was spawned out of a Broadway show collaboration, this track is BIG…like stadium big. Lights, pyro, fog, wireless mics, backup dancers…thats all I can picture when the chorus hits. Don’t be shy, go hit the showers…that shampoo-bottle mic is so hot right now!

Not gonna lie, I’m pretty excited to announce that our Brooklyn live series debut will be on Saturday, August 10th at Knitting Factory. I’ve been smiling for three straight weeks as we’ve been putting this show together for you. It embodies everything we’re about here at TMD. Wonderful people, amazing experiences and the discovery of incredible indie pop music.

First up is Cruiser from Philly. Their high energy indie rock was on steady rotation at TMD HQ after a gracious introduction from Boise’s best Noah Hyde. This was one of my favorite remixes of 2012.

Next…Badboxes from Pittsburgh. When we saw them at Tammany Hall on the 12^th it was clear that their flair for northern electro falsetto would earn them another NYC bid very soon, and we’re proud to be the ones extending it.

The momentum behind Nashville’s COIN is fierce right now. I believe, when introducing their single and video for Honey last month, we ended our blog post with an open invitation to show these guys around NYC. So, this is literally a dream come true.

And finally the President and First Lady of the East Village, Cardiknox. When we heard from them earlier this year, it was clear they were well on their way to a major headline gig. Check!

And if that wasn’t enough, we’ve got Dart Party, in his DJ Set debut, spinning all night between sets.

This is why I love writing a music blog. You’re drinking beers in the LES on a random Wednesday, minding your own business, and boom…amazing music like this just appears in your inbox. I know very little about Thomas Dutton & Lonnie Angle, but their email suggests they are a thoughtful, chic and personable duo from NYC…who just so happen to be debuting two absolute bangers today. Santigold meets MNDR meets Passion Pit. Seriously, if their email was plugging a Bowery Ballroom headline gig next week I would have believed it. Get ready you two, you’re well on your way.
