Seattle-native turned LA-transplant, Robert Charles Edward DeLong (quad names are bomb btw), started off playing in indie rock bands but was led astray by the rave culture (does that mean he just started doing lots of drugs on school nights at abandoned warehouses?). So he decided to do some genre blending, making sort of indie-electro-pop-experimental-dance stuff, seemingly with some dark undertones (that tickle the nostrils) (I sound like a douchey wine guy talking about the tannins… ugh – shoot me now. I swore I’d never be this). Fun fact, he uses Nintendo Wii and Sega Genesis controllers connected to his laptops and what not to alter and play with his music when doing live sets. Idk about you, but that sounds really cool.

What does it say that four of my top five shows from CMJ are rock acts. Is electro-pop dying? Or has it always been an east coast thing? It certainly feels like this dark-pop genre is coming out of the west coast…PAPA, Sir Sly, Bad Suns and my new favorite Night Terrors of 1927. Although, their forefathers, The Walkmen…The National…etc, are east coast. Alright, lets not over analyze it. Just know that Night Terrors of 1927 slayed on Thursday night and it was a highlight of my CMJ. Their new single, Young and Vicious dropped last week and i’m excited for their EP release on November 4th.

This is actually a duo out of Philly consisting of Jeremy Lloyd (production) and Samantha Gongol (vocals), so how they got their name is beyond me. Probably a good story though.

I tend to post a lot of dark-ish R&B, and until I started writing for this blog I had NO IDEA I loved it so much. But I do love it so much, so I was stoked when someone sent me Whisky. This piece is a sensual and soulful summer treat. It’s gonna bring a new level of mystery and sensitivity to my next playlist. Great work, Miss “Marian.”

UTRB is one of my favorite new sound-creators. I had his first single, Pressure, on repeat on Spotify for about a month, ever since Lovelife (one of my other absolute favorites) blogged about him during their takeover of MJF. I love discovering music that way, when another artist you really respect vouches for something. The Welsh magician Pete Lawrie Winfield’s sound is a darker almost industrial R&B, and EPIC.
