Nicky Romero gets help from the past to get FutureFunky

After getting unduly rejected from the cast of True Blood (and Vampire Diaries, but to be clear, beating Ian Somerhalder for the role of Damon Salvatore was never realistic :-/), the Dutchman Nick Rotteveel transformed his hopes and dreams of being a TV vampire and became Nicky Romero, DJ/Producer/Hit Maker, and most importantly, was featured on the killer site FeliSaysListen back in 2014 (#shamelessplug). He in turn is also the founder and owner of Protocol Recordings, featuring EDM artists and helping DJs release tracks under Romero’s tutelage – he’s even got Taylor Swift’s newest plaything, Calvin Harris, on his label. Nicky also made his film debut in Zac Efron’s amazingly accurate portrayal of DJ life in LA, We Are Your Friends… For his newest single, here, Nicky Romero teamed up with 63 year-old Nile Rodgers, one of the leaders of the disco era, and made this sweet video.

Tundran is Still Afraid (of spiders?)

This Indie/New wave/Disco duo from Sweden (which could abbreviate as “INDi” duo, but then it’d be really misleading) (although SwINDi Duo sounds amazing), Tundran, are just two dudes, Felix and Jakob, blending sounds from bands like, Lemaitre, LCD Soundsystem, Chromeo, 1975, etc… and making a nice “play by the pool”-tune. Kinda perfect for day dreaming on a Monday in February… Anywho, they try and use all real instruments in their songs, which they made sure to mention when interviewed. I guess that’s respectable since they’re… umm… musicians and what not… Listening to what Tundran is afraid of (being loved) made me think about what I’m truly afraid of. Is it being alone? Being homeless? Have no legs? I think it’d have to be the tunnel of insects and spiders from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. I don’t think there is anything worse than that, besides like, having to get through that tunnel and having no legs :-/

Let’s say I had a buddy named Lorenz. We’d call him L, since he has a “Z” in his name and that’s silly. If you’d ever meet L, you may not learn that he loves to dance, but he does. This sexy German fellow would put on an air of seriousness, but where he’d feel most at home is standing on a couch at a disco-tech, head slightly lowered, one hand in the air, swaying to the euro electronica dance jams. Well, these dudes Bag Raiders love people like L. The Australian electronica duo have said that playing in America can “be a little strange sometimes” as we Yanks generally sit around “chin-stroking” waiting for the hits; while playing Europe is the polar opposite. Europe has people like L – “a little more knowledgeable when it comes to dance music” – so they can play a whole set of “deeper cuts.” The self professed orchestra/choir/band geeks have come a long way since getting together after meeting in Australian high school (whatever that entails): from playing “wherever they were invited” to their North America Tour starting next month: 3/12 @ Bowery Ballroom.

Giorgio Moroder – Deja Vu (LP)

Giorgio Moroder is a legend (I mean, LOOK at that pornstar ‘stache), who if you remember, Daft Punk had a whole tribute song about in their last album. This dude’s got 3 Academy Awards and 4 Grammys. He wrote “What a Feeling” from Flashdance, and also wrote the Berlin track “Take My Breath Away” from Top Gun (never has one song been re-used more throughout a movie than “Take My Breath Away” in Top Gun. Also, who shows up at someones house for a dinner date and asks to use their shower?? Does Pete Mitchell have NO manners..?! Bold to say the least. I guess that’s why they call him Maverick). Giorgio’s new album is real solid all the way through, very chill dance Daft Punky. There’s a reason he can pull off that ‘stache…

Electro-funk-dance-music (sometimes known as “nu-disco”) is currently “IN” and I’m really happy it is (if you haven’t noticed). Wikipedia tells us that nu-disco is a 21st century dance music genre relying on an interest in 70s and early-80s disco and the synthesizer-heavy Euro disco and P-Funk aesthetics (you know ur a badass band when an entire “aesthetic” is named after you). It became mainstream in 2013 with Daft Punk – and then with others trying to be like Daft Punk. The LA outfit Betablock3r usually are producers/remixers, but are out now some original funky nu-disco tunes. Not sure what the name is supposed to represent, but all I can think of is Zach Galifianakis in the Hangover wearing those BlueBlockers with Carlos strapped to his chest. Am I wrong to think that?

Midnight Pool Party – Stay & Linger

Australian nu(de?)-disco-duo, Midnight Pool Party, are priming us for the sunshine season with their delectable funky summer jams. Joining forces in 2013, obviously influenced by disco & funk, MPP have been doin’ it right for some time now – makin’ tunes that make them happy in the awesomest aussie ways. For some reason the kind of Midnight Pool Party I think of when I listen to their tunes involves skinny dipping in your parent’s pool while they’re out of town with the music blasting and tiki torches lit, or that bottomless party from Harold & Kumar (idk why…). Everything’s fun about these duders. The funky hooks, simple but to the point lyrics, infectious synths, make MPP a summer playlist must have. Plus, everyone will ask you like, “dude, where’d you hear of this dope band?”, and you’ll be like, “from my boy Feli @ The Most Definitely, he’s always hooks me up”, and they’ll be like, “damn, you’re always in the know. that’s so cool of you. you’re so hot “, and you’ll be like, “you know it girl. let’s dance.” Go do ur thing – thank us later

Roisto – Apart in Love

Roisto takes his name from the Finnish word for “villain,” and comes to us from the most northern dark and treacherous forests of Finland (allegedly…). Supposedly he’s got a little studio filled with old tapes, vinyls, and other goofy stuff where he disappeared to come out with this fun electrochill disco EP (again… allegedly). The interwebs – which cannot be trusted – seem to be reallllly sweatin’ this guy, even though the only picture we can see of him looks like he just got home from the taxidermist; and the only information you can find seems cultishly rehearsed. Anywho, he’s got some happy tracks for our ear-holes, and that’s enough for me.

Digital Badbeat – The Coach (feat. Derek Krzywicki)

My friends and I are in love with this happy-go-lucky rock & roll band out of Philly, Cheers Elephant, and we make sure to catch them whenever they play in NY. So much fun to watch live – frontman Derek busts out some awesome 50’s dance moves and cute faces to match his unique vocal embellishments. They just did a set after one of the Sleep No More shows at McKittrick Hotel, and I got this pic of us with TMD tats (not the best pic but you can kinda see them).

They really deserve some blog time, but they are not electronic by any means, so sadly I wasn’t sure about putting them on TMD. Until I got this message about Derek’s collab with French producer Digital Badbeat on this delicious disco electro-pop piece! I have been waiting for this moment! If the catchy beat and Derek’s playful vocals aren’t enough for you, just wait for the choir of children. Ain’t nobody can resist choirs of chilluns.

Olympic Ayres – Magic

Oh hell yes, new Olympic Ayres song! This is the first single off their upcoming EP, Episode III, which I am stoked for. The View turned my winter into a summer (or at least made the obnoxiously long winter bearable), and this track continues the funky, tropical legend. I’m expecting a lot from the Sydney duo, especially with Magic living up to its name. The whole EP is set for a July 31st release (Magic? Harry Potter’s birthday? That can’t be coincidence…), and look out for remixes from Luke Million, Pharoa Black Magic, and TMD favorites Night Drive.

Whoa, thanks to the #musicmonday tag on Twitter for this find! Is this a regular Monday thing, and it just happens to be trending today, or what? Anyway, Laura’s voice is like a haunting mesh of Ellie Goulding and Lana Del Ray, and completely versatile. She’s from London, and there must be something in the water over there, because whenever I see that a female vocalist is out of London, I start to get turned on before even hearing a song. Take the original Cold Front in all its dreamy sensuality and bring in Russ Chimes’ funky, glittery beats, and you have a song to define your summer.
