Tim’s Essential Tracks of 2013

So that was 2013 huh? Pretty solid year. I’ve been working on this list all year. Full disclosure, if you’re looking for the obvious “Best of 2013″ list, this is not for you. This is more about the tracks that might have slipped through the cracks, the tracks that never quite got the attention they deserved. Some of them are more obvious than others (read: Daft Punk). While others, need to be heard (read: Streets of Laredo).

How do you boil down a year to 15 songs? In my case, you don’t. You make a soundcloud best of and a Spotify Best of list. We had a banner year personally, professionally and musically. A lot of firsts that I am extremely thankful for. Rather than sit here and wax poetic on what was definitely the best year of my life, why don’t you just sit back and listen to these tunes that helped make 2013 so special?

MS MR – Think of You (HAERTS Remix)

Known less formally as Lizzy and Max, MS MR has been getting a lot of play and daps in the past year (and why shouldn’t they!?!). I hear Hurricane on the radio all the time out here in SF which blows my mind a little. Think of You is a great song and it got the serious HAERTS treatment here to make it something different, new and amazing!

We love both of these bands here at TMD (just search, you’ll see) so you won’t be surprised when we got really excited for this collaboration. It is awesome! Haerts add a driving beat to really bring up the tempo and change the tone of the song altogether. Don’t even get me started on the excellent synth additions.

This song is not for people who can’t head bob at their desks. Its probably not even safe if you don’t have some open space nearby to dance. Listen, then go to the kitchen in your office and do your thing!

Thanksgiving Mix

During the holidays there are lots of people around, lots of cooking, lots of ~~interrogating~~ inquiring questions about your life and a few over-served uncles. For me, it always seems to be easier when you have some nice soothing music in the background. Maybe your family (read wife) doesn’t appreciate football color commentary all day.

Whatever your reason, a good mix is always something to have in your back pocket. I put one together that I think you’ll like. It’s very calm, soothing and has the warm feeling that Thanksgiving gives you (or the shots of Wild Turkey that Uncle Doug insists are a tradition). I’m sure you’ve heard a bunch of these songs before by some of our favorites: MS MR, Kite String Tangle, Postiljonen, Haerts, etc.

I am not reinventing the wheel here, just putting it together in a shiny, user-friendly package. I hope this mix brings you as much serene relaxation as it does me. If that doesn’t work just wait for the tryptophan to kick in and you should be all good.

MS MR – Think of You (RAC Remix)

I’m still buzzing from RAC’s last offering, “Let Go,” and now André has put out a quality remix to MS MR’s “Think of You.” Admittedly, I do have a soft spot for MS MR remixes, like CHVRCHES‘ and Yeasayer‘s takes on “Hurricane.” But regardless of this bias, the “Think of You” remix is a sure-fire dancefloor track. The original is a bit dark, slow and chugging with a catchy chorus. Well, RAC latched on to that chorus and dropped it over a dance driven beat to completely flip the song on its head. MS MR – Hurricane (Yeasayer remix)

Yes, there is no shortage remixes of MS MR songs, especially “Hurricane,” (including this fantastic one from CHVRCHES.) Yet, this week fellow Brooklynites Yeasayer tried their hand at mixing the lead-single off of Secondhand Rapture. The result is an engaging, deeper, and darker track that builds to a cinematic closing – certainly a different direction than CHVRCHES’ synth-pop version. Take a listen below and see how you think this version stacks up to the others.
