I’ve been known to moonlight as the lighting director at a certain club in Williamsburg. I don’t get in there often, but when I do I make it count. One of those times was this past winter for FKJ. Honestly, I wasn’t much of a fan going in…but on the way out I was in! As DJ/Producer live sets go, FKJ’s is about as good as it gets….certainly helps when the lighting was all murdered out!

Australian nu(de?)-disco-duo, Midnight Pool Party, are priming us for the sunshine season with their delectable funky summer jams. Joining forces in 2013, obviously influenced by disco & funk, MPP have been doin’ it right for some time now – makin’ tunes that make them happy in the awesomest aussie ways. For some reason the kind of Midnight Pool Party I think of when I listen to their tunes involves skinny dipping in your parent’s pool while they’re out of town with the music blasting and tiki torches lit, or that bottomless party from Harold & Kumar (idk why…). Everything’s fun about these duders. The funky hooks, simple but to the point lyrics, infectious synths, make MPP a summer playlist must have. Plus, everyone will ask you like, “dude, where’d you hear of this dope band?”, and you’ll be like, “from my boy Feli @ The Most Definitely, he’s always hooks me up”, and they’ll be like, “damn, you’re always in the know. that’s so cool of you. you’re so hot “, and you’ll be like, “you know it girl. let’s dance.” Go do ur thing – thank us later

Tove Lo – Habits (Oliver Nelson Remix)

I’ve actually never heard an Oliver Nelson remix that I didn’t like. After all, he pretty much invented TMD’s most heralded genre, nu disco. Two of Stockholm’s finest come together in this masterpiece thats plug-n-play ready for poolside or late night, take your pick.

Passerine – Free Again

We definitely listen a bunch of nu-disco and it’s hard not to share all of it, but I think this track is a standout. Passerine is made up of a 7-piece band fronted by vocalist Phoebe Dubar. This Melbourne dub-disco collective hasn’t been around for too long but their future looks very bright to me.

Free Again just has a very fresh and energetic feel. Sometimes with nu-disco, you can get caught up listening for where the samples for the melody or beats came from. Here I don’t get any of that. This song is original in it’s composition and arrangement and I just felt myself enjoying it, tapping my toes without looking for any recycled pieces. It’s like a breath of fresh air out on the dance floor. So, lace ’em up, you’re not going to want to sit this one out.

Yup, this track slays. Did you expect anything less? The Knocks’ sound evolves yet again but retains the strong Nu Disco roots that we’ve become accustomed to. Is it the weekend yet? Well done!

Excuuuuuuse me for being the 170,000,001st Naughty Boy – La La La YouTube play. Sometimes you get in your own zone and stuff slips through the cracks. Not that the original is really in the sweet spot, but I should at least know what the f is going on in the world. (Come to think of it, I haven’t even seen that Gangnam Style video from last year…oh well…FML.) I this case, though, you had me at Sam Smith + Oliver Nelson. I just get excited when two artists on top of their respective games collaborate for a remix. Im just a sucker for that shit. It also helps that lately i’ve had a serious hankering for some Nu Disco.

Im not usually down with music blogs that describe sounds, but TLOBF kinda nailed it here when blogging the original back in July. “no matter how many times you hear Matthew Guttridge’s incessant yet delicate, near feminine whispers, his authenticity seems to stick. Scattershot toms, noodling 80s guitar licks and purposefully plinking pianos are smudged together to form a fresh, exotic melody which bleaches Matt’s waifish, lovelorn sighs evermore. Le Crayon – Give You Up (feat. KLP)

Last night I was out with a friend and maybe 3 or so drinks in (I’m a small person, keep in mind), and the DJ played a remix of Give You Up by Le Crayon (the Darius remix to be exact). Shazam was failing on me so I went up to the DJ to ask, and then made my friend record an Instagram video of him saying the name of the song. Yeah, instead of just writing it down. REALLY dumb. But I liked it that much. I realized later that I had heard about this song before, from KLP’s Facebook – she’s an Australian singer and producer I had blogged before – so essentially, everything fell together and now I am sharing this choice tune with you all.

Le Crayon (Lauren Crayon) is a French producer who has worked with some of the best: Crystal Fighters, Anoraak and Alan Braxe to name a few. He’s released an EP with Pyramid on Kitsuné, so you know you can trust his stylings. This piece is a disco dream, and everything on the EP is awesome.
